Don't sweat it. I've seen Stainless echo cans welded to aluminized exhaust a buncha times. I asked the guy if he had to do something special for the stainless, he looked at me like I was nuts. I fabbed a conveyor system out of stainless, I used the proper wire and Trimix gas, no biggie at all. Even had to weld some Std steel brackets to it, no problem, still together 7 years later. Getcha some!

Not to introduce more confusion, but I've always used 309L and pure argon when TIG welding dissimilar alloys (carbon steel to stainless). I'm not sure the composition of the gas is as important as the purge. The trick with SS is to purge on the backside to prevent sugaring. Attached photo shows what I use to purge the tube but I've seen homemade setups that work great. With the inside and outside of the weld area bathed in inert gas, the weld bead should have a nice golden appearance and require very little filler. I have zero experience with MIG welding this combination. 309L may not be a wire option and trimix may be better suited to the 308L. But I'm like you, I'd at least give it a try. It should be quickly apparent if it was a bad decision. Just clean up the ugly and regroup.

Cool! I figger I'm going to load up that stainless wire that I have (which I constantly snip chunks off of for other fixin stuff :) ) and give it a go. If it's crappy I'll probably just use some good quality clamps.

Thanks Vic! As I was writing my last post I was trying to think of the snappy, ultra clean way you'd approach it. I always appreciate your input, love following your build and have a ton of respect for guys like you that can make such any messy, difficult task look soooo easy. Smarter, not harder is something you've got figgered out friend!


So I have been busy on Chevy trucks. Just not all on the right truck! Ball joints and window regulator in the Silverado - boring. Woke the Crummy up from it's winter slumber. Had to get the front driveline rebuilt after we blowed it up last year. CV rebuild, new slip joint, lengthen 1-1/2" and new universals = $230 YIKES! Battery is POS but we got it rousted and hit the dirt roads on year-old gas. Q-Jet is right on tune and the GovBomb is working sweet! :lol: Still have some maintenance to do there because it's firewood season again and we already know where there's another grandpa doug fir waiting for us :metal:


C10? I got the cross member half done. Still need to slant the center to match the engine/trans centerline where the trans mount bolts, then weld in some bosses where the bolts go. I'm also going to fab some brackets to tie it to the upper flange of the frame rail. Big Brown dropped off some love too! I think they're going to be plenty loud!! I'm going to fab some angle blocks to set my pinion angle and another 1" drop and a kool c-notch, then on to exhaust.

Holy loudness. I am running dual Flowmaster super 40s and they sound amazing unles I drive next to a wall or Ina tunnel. Then, the result is deafness! I dont even turn on my stereo beacuse I wouldnt be able to hear it if I did... Lol

Which mufflers are those?

Muffs are Flowmaster Super 10 Series.

I researched quite a bit and want that crispy sound. 10:1 roller 327 baby! I'll do a balance pipe and tailpipe clear over the axle, out each side. 2-1/2" all the way. Still waffling on where to put the muffs. In front of the member or behind? Pros and cons each way....

Dude, I love that 3+3, always wanted a full 4dr truck!

I have my mufflers after the crossmember and dumps in front of the rear wheels. If I had it to do over again, I would go out the rear. It sounds awesome but when it bounces off other cars and walls on either side, it is sooooo loud. People roll up their windows at stop lights...

Oh yeah, if you're blockin' down another inch, and you know your angle needs, blocks are stupid easy to make and shave for angle, especially if you have access to a Bridgeport. Which i bet in your gig a case of beer could make happen. directions here-Post 368.

Been there. Better to take a break than git out there when not motivated. Quickest way for me to suffer burn out.
You could clean the shop though. That always gets me turned around.

Broom, dust pan, some lemon fresh Pledge......clean time done......... Put a wrench in my hand!

Nice choice on the super 10's brother... Plan on running them myself. From what I've seen with them.. Best to place them as far behind the cab as possible (less droan at cruising speed) and run your pipes out from under the vehicle. Had "dumps" once under the box. Won't do that again. Lol.

My greatest mentor was a machinist / instructor in college (Industrial Fluid Power). Dude ran a tight ship, clean shop and just plain didn't do $hit stupid. He called fart when he smelled fart. Shout out to Ed Willey, you made a dent man. If I had my way, you could serve over-easy eggs under my bench vise. Score an inline yet? I'm tellin' you dude, get one.

Thanks for looking over here man! I've got no first-hand experience but I did look at about a jillion video clips. I want thist thing to sound good. My plan is to have the muffs just past the trailing arms cross member, under the bed and run tail pipes over the axle and out the sides, behind those 295's. I'm also going to use a balance pipe just past the trans.

*uckin $hit-storm in here lately. With the Boy, it's like a truck fixin' convinience store. Gotta teach him to get some skin when he's sorting out OPP! We swept up and all tools are in check. Cross member is basically there and I got a few sheckles to buy some bent pipe for exhaust. Crummy need some love tho and I ain't got much firewood out there :(

I prolly think about Boppa's 5.3 just about as much as you do Chip. That's gonna be a sweet ride for him and it's just soooo cool that you did that for your Pa. I'd be proud if I could do the same. My Pa has a '75 Silverado that he uses like a dozer. I have some good pics too. I'd love to whip that thing into shape for him. He'd park the 2014 Subaru, I'm sure.

The Boy should be seeing Big Brown today we hope, for his new rotating assembly. His heads are rebuilt, ready to go and he's got a fresh four-bolt on the stand already. I'll update Punching Bag with some assembly photos here soon.
