The reason they said you would have to change the wheels is because those are the two piece wheels, not to be confused with lock-ring type wheels like mine has, which are still used alot today, and are fairly safe as long as the wheel and locking ring are not badly rusted or bent. The wheels on your truck actually come apart right down the middle of the wheel in two almost equal halves. They are extremely dangerous, even just to air up a low tire so be very careful. These are the wheels that coined the name "killer wheels" or "widow makers". They have injured or killed many people, which is why most states have outlawed them all together.

I know that, and that is fine with me, we got brand new semi tires on there, LOL. I know they were extremely dangerous, and it is illegal to put new tires on them or fix tires on them, which is why we had to get new ones. I will post some more pics of the new wheels and tires soon.

Guys,

I've got a 68 c-50 with split rim "widow makers" on the rear axle. The tires are 8.25 x 20. What rims can I replace these with, nobody here in Utah will touch them. Can I use the existing tires I have with innertube on the new rims? If anyone has done this before please give some input

I'm not sure you're going to find a 20" wheel for that bolt pattern. We got semi-truck 22.5 steel wheels and Bridgestone V-Steel semi tires. Cost $1k, but we'll never need front tires again.

Re: 65 C60

you could have or can get 22.5 alcoa aluminum simi wheels and have them turned down to 22. then u can get street tires in 22.

Re: 65 C60

That would be even more expensive. Our wheels were $250 apiece as were the tires. I'm sure Alcoa alum's are $500+ apiece. Plus, it's on a C50 anyways, he's going to want the load capacity of the semi tires. It does have the large 5 bolt pattern, correct?

Re: 65 C60

they sell adapters on egay for them to go to 10 or 8. you can call Goodyear of someone like that. they are not that bad at all or the local salvage yard(big truck) they sell them also. When i worked at penske I think I could get them for 150 200 each. I was going to do this for my dad on his 73 one ton. dully

Re: 65 C60

local truck tire garage had semi rims that fit it like a glove. 3 of the 6 tires are now on the upgraded rims. I'll swap the last three when the tires wear out.

Re: 65 C60

We were told on the rear that if/when we have to replace one rear tire, we have to replace them all, as they can't re-mount these wheels apparently. The rears have tons of tread, so I hope we don't get a flat, lol.

Pics Updated. Also hauled 2 loads of scrap with it in July. First was gates out of hog barns, and they weighed almost 6 tons, hauled another load of 3 tons of steel. About $600 of steel at $75/ton.

Re: 65 C60

yeah! I got to see how nice your truck is. I'm kinda on the hunt for one right now as my plans for my profect change whenever I see something I like. Now I've got it in my head to get on of these beasts to use as a base for my crew cab build. How cool would one of these be with a crewcab, big window, cummins, and a 10 speed? And it would have to be set up with air suspension and a fleetside bed with step side fenders added one....oh, and the bed would have to dump, can't have a big truck w/o a dump bed....anybody wanna sponsor this?

I've been cruising the net for one and saw a wrecker with a BBW! I didn't think they ever made heavy duty trucks like that. Anyway I'm on the hunt now, just might make a kill. If you have a minute can you measure from the back of the cab to the front of the rear wheels? I'm woondering how much room is in there.

Re: 65 C60

Every truck is different, depending on the bed that was put on. GM made one chassis and the coach builder cut and welded in frame extensions to make their bed fit.

Tito, the only thing different that you can see on the truck is the wheels, and right now it's in the shed, behind a bunch of tractors. If I get it out to change the oil before winter, then I might get some pics.

almost al wreckers, and tow trucks were big back window, for visibility...
check out www.6066gmcguy.org/ for frame length for the bigger series trucks, there were quite a few.
.... and check out this for inspiration

Re: 65 C60

That's some pretty awesome inspiration. I've got to thinking about this since I've already seen a couple crewcab c10's running around the forum, which would make mine be another in the crowd. I've also thought of doing a Long Bed dually

I have a 1965 c60 dump with that model hoist, and the company is out of business and having a real problem locating any literature on the hoist
