Re: 1972 Chevy Pickup Project.
Man, this thing is looking killer! Where did you order your replacement body panels from, and how happy are you with the fitment? I am wanting to convert my 70 to a 67-68 front end.

Re: 1972 Chevy Pickup Project.
Ok ive had my new door seals setting in the box for a couple months now waiting to put them on. I got them out today and went to install them. They suck big time. I have to slam the doors really hard to get the doors to shut. That was not going to work. Then I remembered reading on here a while back about the seals taking forever to break in and that the dodge dakota seals work really well. So....I made a trip to the u-pull salvage yard today and found myself a set of door seals from a 95 dodge dakota. They look exactly like the new ones i have but they are really soft. and you dont have to glue them on they are push on. I also pickup up a couple door rubber grommets to run my power window and door lock wiring in. I had to try the door seals right away. and success.... they were 3 inches too long so I cut off the excess. The doors shut now without having to slam them.
The next thing is I need some advice. I took off my tahoe exhaust and put on stainless short headers and was planning on installing true duel exhast with glass packs. the question is : I dont know what to do about the 2nd oxygen sensor. It is suppose to be after the cats, but if i run new exhaust I wont have any cats. so.......should I just put the factory exhaust back on with the stock muffler? I was really hoping for a little more sound but I dont want it to be extremly loud. Im open for any input. thanks in advance. |
Re: 1972 Chevy Pickup Project.
You can leave the rear 02 sensors out and either remove wiring to them or tape off inside the loom. Your ecm will need to be reflashed to delete the rear o2 sensors. The rear ones monitor cat converter function and won't effect how it runs. I deleted rear o2 sensors on mine and had ecm reflashed.

I sent my ecm to a guy on eBay and was around $75 . He was super helpful and can tune for gear ratio cold air intake electric fans etc. Here's a picture of his eBay info.

Re: 1972 Chevy Pickup Project.
Got a lot done today. I refilled all the fluids and found an immediate problem. I know I should have put on a new water pump when I did the motor tear down but I check everything and it looked really good. As it turns out the seal behind the pulley is bad because water started running out. Went to the local parts store and picked up a new one. Im going to finnish up the new fuel filler neck tomorrow and then ill try to start it up for the first time since the teardown.

Re: 1972 Chevy Pickup Project.
The ecm would have to be reflashed first to delete anti theft passlock system for it to start unless you are using all the stuff from the donor like the body control module steering column etc. Just a thought you may have that all worked out already.

Re: 1972 Chevy Pickup Project.
So Ive got an appointment to have the ecu reflashed and that will fix my tire size change, my o2 sensor delete, any engine related changes, etc. But where do I have the computer reprogramed for the inside components? I want to turn off the extra air bags, reprogram for the new factory stereo, etc. Any ideas?
|
Re: 1972 Chevy Pickup Project.
You could take the bulb out of the cluster for the air bag light and for the factory stereo if it came out of the same vehicle everything else did it should work without being locked.

Re: 1972 Chevy Pickup Project.
If radio is locked dealer can program it. I do it at work for people who replace the radio themselves. Truck looks great with grille and bumper on.

Re: 1972 Chevy Pickup Project.
Ive read through this thread a couple times and I don't think I missed it, there isn't anything about what you had to do to make the body and box fit the frame. Are the wheel bases exactly the same? Just curious overall what the process was making the new frame work with the old body. I did see the rad support work.
Truck is looking great, Im sure a whole bunch of us would like to have a ride like yours! |

Re: 1972 Chevy Pickup Project.
You may have to use relays for headlight switch etc. Newer switches can't handle current like old switches wires are much smaller.
