Re: My new project 86 Silverado
i like yer build droppin the 455 in there how are you gonna mount it with the 350 deisel mounts since they close or make new mounts and how radical of a motor is the 455 gonna be?

mine will make 500+ ft/lbs of torque from idle through 3000rpm. Peak HP will be around 4-4500 rpm... not too shabby, since the rebuild kit for one is only 700.00+, and the motor cost me about 300-400 i think. will be using a TH400 tranny, that's why I am asking if a truck 10 bolt is stronger than a truck 12 bolt, i'll probably twist one in half with 500+ ft/lbs of TQ :) all Olds engines are the same width between the motor mounts, it is the deck height that is different, the big block is taller... so same motor mounts for the small block fits the big... depending on circumstances, may need to use the two forward holes on the block to mount the motor mounts. can use car or truck frame mounts, just have to use the motor mounts that fit the frame mounts(they have to match depth of the motor mounts etc.)... and of course will have to set the engine in, and figure out where you will need to mount the frame mount, may have to drill holes, or weld them in. in my situation, since my truck is all apart, i'll set the engine/tranny in, and make sure i have it far enough back so my driveshaft fits, then i'll bolt in the frame mounts, and tranny crossmember and i'll be good to go. |
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
supposed to rain over the next several days.... so i may not have any updates until it dries out...
|
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
Yeah it is heading your way. We are on day two of the rain.
|
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
At least y'all's is somewhat predictable  in Texas it can be 80 1 day and next day it be 60 and pouring down rain, it's safe to say Texas has it's own Eco system
Looking forward to the progress when you get it, we all have to deal with the elements one way or another. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
moved my cab out of the carport, now can sand and prime the bottom over the next few days.
moved my frame back into the carport up on jackstands. now i can stay out of the rain while i do the frame, and clean up frame parts. will be redoing all the tie-rod ends now, and the installing the LCA's pics tomorrow... will be going flip kit, and 2.5" drop spindles in the front after may 1st. |
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
I am glad you said that about the tie rods. I need to go ahead and put all my new steering stuff on. Did you end up getting any drop springs or are you cutting yours down?
|
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
i'm going with Mcgaughy's drop spindles, and flip kit. not going to cut any springs, don't want the ride to suck
|
Re: My new project 86 Silverado

plenty of places for switches and lights :) |
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
I for one would like to see that happen. I would prefer the holes filled if it were mine but its not. :) Either way I would like to see it finished out. That would probably be pretty cool.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
Seriously, I think you might be on to something there. That would have never crossed my mind. The metal is pretty thin isn't it. I would be worried about it warping. Still a great idea. Do it!

It's going to look awesome with whatever you decide to do! :metal: maybe weld some of the holes up, and leave a few to put some lights or guages in maybe?

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
Good Lord, you've removed some material haven't you? How big a compressor do you have? Looks great, tuned in for the progress.
|
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
Quote:
compressor is a porter cable 6hp 6.8 SCFM@90 psi 25 gallon tank - not a powerhouse but it will get the job done, i'll be spraying the whole truck with it too... |

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
OK... finally got my budget worked out for my project.
Paint etc. already decided ,and have supplies. Front drop, already decided and have hardware. 1st question: looking for another engine solution. at first I was looking at Chevy 327 options, which I really like even though people say i'm crazy for wanting one. If I go with a 327 I want to be able to spin it real high if I want. For the engine... budget says I can go three different routes... a short, or long block and add ons to complete the engine, or... a turn-key engine. For a small block Chevy(cubic inches doesn't matter now), I would like input from you guys on which route could be the best bang for the buck with a budget of 4000.00+? Transmission will be TH400, rear gear 3.08. 2nd question: Since I am only doing static drop on my truck with 2.5" drop spindles etc. up front. And I want to lower it in the rear and have a little rake to it. What would be the best suspension option for getting rid of the leaf spring setup in the rear, and a budget of 2000.00 or less. Anyone used one of these? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...8/media/images As always, let me know what info you need to help me figure some stuff out. Kind regards, naphtali |
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
I've got one of those serpentine kits but its still in the box. It's the same thing they're putting on late-model cars and trucks in a kit to retrofit on a old small block - not much to it really. If you wanted to get all that out the junkyard and dress it up you could and essentially have the same thing. That might be an option if you want to save some $$$ to put on the long-block.
To rev, 327 or 377, but what happened to the 455? |
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
I still have the 455 :) I'm thinking about putting that with my 67.
yeah I figured a kit that had it all together in one package (part #12497697 is with PS/ALT and no A/C) would be cool to put on a SBC instead of one of those super expensive March kits. Quote:

Re: My new project 86 Silverado
blah... rain for the next week, wtf? i wish I had a garage/shop, this really sucks guys... :waah:
At least I get to order parts, I guess that's a consolation... |
Re: My new project 86 Silverado
All that bare metal makes me think you should chrome it all!
Lots of work & it looks great so far!! |
