I'm really anxious to see how your fender mod turns out for me. I haven't done the inners yet, but will be, but probably not until after paint. Did you finish your fender mod article showing how you did the inners? I have some ideas, but i'm curious if you ran into any issues.

Not until after I get moved into the new shop. My trucks are in dry storage for now. I'm shooting for the end of May to have them moved into the shop. Then the flood gates open once more :D

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project

so today's update includes a couple pics from last sunday and a couple evenings this week. Nothing to exciting other than both doors handles have been covered in Rage Gold and sanded and etch primed. This being the first body work i've ever done, i'm pretty happy with the results considering all i had for my blocks was 80 grit paper. I do expect to go over them one more time prior to paint, but they look smooth, and feel pretty smooth as is.

I also got the antenna hole shaved, mudded and rough sanded.

Oh, and the biggest little thing... i reinstalled the inner door handles! i had boogered up the clips that hold the rods in place when i was removing them because i didn't think i was going to reinstall them. but then i realized i really should. So, a couple minutes bending the old clips so they would work, and about 20 min getting my arm inside the door to get them in place, and we're in business.

but on to the good part of the post... pics!!

tomorrow i have a couple odds and ends to do, but next weekend is gonna be brutal. 2 hour drive up to my parents where the truck is getting disassembled. Clip will get pulled, then the engine/tranny, then the bed.

engine is getting a gasket / seal kit, tranny is getting new seals thx to my brother. clip is getting set to the side (and is for sale btw, $250) and the gas tank is getting moved under the bed. I got the tank from the surplus link posted on these forums, and picked up a sending unit, ring and float from LMC. The rest i'll just wing.

oh, and some shinny stuff from LMC showed up this week. all new 67-68 grille chrome, window felts, and a couple other things. you'll have to wait until they are on the truck to see them. :)

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project

btw, i wanted to describe what i did on the doors to get them smooth.

First, i used filler panels from a guy on ebay. after grinding, i covered them in "metal to metal". rough sanded them down, then covered them with Rage Gold. I also have a 16" sanding block that i used 80 grit paper on. i was having good luck with it, however when i would rub my hand over the area i was working, the different texture between metal and mud made it hard to tell if i had a high spot or low spot.

so, i sprayed a light coat of the etching primer i planned to use, let it dry. then I used the edge of my block, started at the top of the door, and moved it down. after doing this a few times, i could see where my high spots were (the areas where most of the paint was removed) and the low spots were (the areas where no paint was removed).

after doing this, it was really easy to see what needed work and what didn't.

i think this process is called a "guide coat", and there's some sort of powder you can rub on, but i have no clue that stuff is, or where to get it. if anyone can shed some light on it, i'd appreciated it.

the door pics above show the result of this process.

Your work is looking real good. That is the biggest thing with body work is patience to deal with getting it right.

On your antenna, don't forget to seal the hole in the cab where the wire goes through or you'll have some leaks later.

Great job ,looks great......You can get 3m guide coat at about any auto paint store....IMO i would not waste your money ..its a black powder that is wiped on with a supplied sponge...IME it tends to wipe off and hides high or low spots...I have always just used rattle can paint....(spray bomb) IME ...the paint will not come off unless its sanded off.....just a light mist..will do the job just fine......i have used just a flat black...but other colors will work....as long as it is darker than the primer or sealer you will be just fine, hope this helps....................tony

good call. i had some left over filler while taking care of some other stuff, and used it to plug that hole this weekend.

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project

ok, so here's a teaser post. got a lot done up at my parents place this weekend, and lots of pics. However, i left my USB cable for my camera at my folks house, so pics will have to wait until tomorrow when i get to work.

Here's the run down of what got done. Friday night was SUPER productive. Saturday and Sunday were still productive, but it was a lot of small stuff.

Friday night:
8pm - start pulling the front clip
11:30pm - clip is off and we started on getting the engine ready to be pulled in the morning.
1:15am - cracked first beer (only 3 in the fridge)
1:25am - 2nd wind came, and we decided to pull engine, but we needed more beer
1:30am - quick run to the gas station for a 12 pack
3:00am - engine / tranny was sitting on the floor
3:15am - took some cool pics of the cross member smashing a "beer can pyramid"
3:30am - sleep

Saturday
swapped out the seat in my uncles 90's step side. Got the bed pulled, flipped, and sitting on a small trailer. we then moved it into the garage, leaving room for the truck.

I mocked up the gas tank and realized i had the wrong sending unit. A call to lockDoc and my brother lurch115 revealed the surplus tank was for a 73-86 truck. since i ordered it over a year ago, i forgot. oh well, o'rielly's will have the right one in for me tomorrow. I did get the hard line run down the frame rail.

also made a couple "fixes" to the air lines and wiring since the bed was off. now the air lines won't stick out past the roll pan like they do in the pics above.

The rest of saturday, until 1:30am was spent sanding, and sanding, and more sanding. My dad now has pink dust over everything in his garage.

he's REALLY excited about that

Sunday
Pulled the seat and got the tank out. nothing exciting here, other than the fact that my wife actually helped me with this part. although there are no pics to prove it, i swear i'll get pics next time she helps. i have a verbal commitment from her that she'll help do some sanding next weekend.

Oh, i did get the gas filler hole welded up, grinded smooth, and covered in some metal to metal.

then my wife made me come home....

26 days until it must be back on the road...

we also cleaned the engine:

IvelDesigns 05-10-2008 06:55 AM

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project

i slowed down on the pics cause i left the camera in the house, but i got a lot of sanding done on the bed and cab last weekend. no pics of that.

so that leads us to the plans for this weekend.

i picked up some epoxy primer, and some high build primer today. I also got a bunch of shinny parts for the 283 and a gasket kit that lurch is doing this week. another box from LMC came with more shinny parts for the grill...

the goal this weekend is to:
go to the drag races friday night with lurch's 84 short box
plumb the gas tank (i got the sending unit today)
sand some more
fill some rust craters in the hood
take the truck to the car wash and spray the frame
spray some chassis paint on the frame
spray some epoxy primer on the clip
spray some high build on the clip and the body work i've done
block those areas
cut holes in the bed and mod some bed floor rails to clear the pumpkin and the air tank

maybe drop the engine in on sunday if we have time.

these were taken by my brother this week during the "refresh" he's doing on the 283. oh, and the crank gear... he took off with his fingers. pretty scary IMO

Looking good, and you are moving right along- but will it be ready for the meet?

IvelDesigns 05-12-2008 07:06 AM

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project

today i finished all of the body work on the clip. i have a little bit of sanding left, but i'm calling it done. the gas tank also got mounted and plumbed today.

tomorrow i'm going to be finishing the remaining sanding. i'm planning to load it up on the trailer and take it down the car wash to spray off the frame in the morning. the oil leaks i've had coated the bottom of the truck pretty bad, so it'll be nice to get it clean again. we will be spraying etch primer followed by some high build primer on the clip. I hope to have time to block it as well before i head back home.

the motor will be done next week as well. got some new shinny parts for it this weekend, along with an oil pump and new balancer. fyi, parts for a 283 are tough to get at a parts store.

paint is scheduled next saturday. starting the morning with a sealer coat over the whole thing, then paint, then clear. we'll leave the truck at the booth over night and pick it up in the morning on sunday.

motor will get dropped in on sunday and hopefully fired up. the core support will also probably be put in on sunday as well.

the following weekend all loose ends will be tied up and i expect to be driving it home on the 25th. if i have to, i'll take a day off to finish putting things back together.

the following weekend is the midwest meet.

wish me luck :)

WOW !! This reads like an episode of Overhaulin !! I love it and wish I had the time to spend that much time on mine !! My motor is almost finished hopefully back in by mid week . Good luck and great job !!! Bob

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project

it's a good thing my wife doesn't read these forums....

I just got off the phone with the paint supply store... on top of the $200 i spent on primer for just the front clip, it's gonna be another 700 bucks for paint and clear. about double what i was hoping for, but it's getting done damn it! :)

also, i'm not going hugger now, mostly due to cost. Monza Red is the color now. after putting a paint chip up to the inside of my fender with good light, it's clear what the color is.

I'll post an update and pics tonight of the work that was done this weekend.

nothing really to show from last weekend other than the gas tank getting mounted and plumbed, and a boat load of sanding.

okay...i'll make an update with some pics...you've all seen the pictures of the what the motor looked like before we pulled it and now i have a few pics of it almost completely put back togeather.....

and if i do say so myself i think the motor looks like it should run ALOT better since the timing chain had almost 4 degrees slop in it and few other things here and there....i'll have some more of the "replaced" parts later

lurch115 05-16-2008 06:40 AM

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project

okay so here goes....sorry that most of the pics are blury...crappy camera and kinda tired...anyways...i'll start off with the major issue..

first was the timing chain, which as you have read was toast. I have never seen a chain this worn out not jump time before...(note the grooves in the the cam gear as it was a factory gear that was supose to have smooth teeth)

and as for the broken bolt. when i was installing the new timing set i was down to torquing the last of three bolts when all of a sudden (at about 10 ft. lbs.) SNAP! broke off flush with the end of the cam. needless to say, my jaw hit the floor. luckly alls it took as a punch and a light tap with a hammer and it backed out...

lurch115 05-16-2008 06:44 AM

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project

2 Attachment(s)
and the next major issue was the old rivet style balancer....ended up having to (persuade) it a little to get it to come loose. that was after i drill the three bolt holes all the way through so i could put nuts on the back side since it pulled all the threads out. Not to meantion it was basically toast anyways

lurch115 05-16-2008 06:50 AM

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project

2 Attachment(s)
oh, and don't forget the main reason we desided to pull the motor and "refresh" it a bit....the freakin' thing leaked like no other....the main reason was the rear main seal (no picture) and the other reason was the front pan seal....the picture shows why...

the push rods were replaced with some slightly used ones as these 3 were cracked over halfway through and on the verge of breaking...caused by rust pitting and then stress

lurch115 05-16-2008 07:00 AM

Re: '69 Longbed Daily Driver - Project

3 Attachment(s)
last series of pics for replaced engine parts i promise...

the first picture is of the valve covers, timing cover and oil pump. Ivel wanted some chrome so he got chrome valve covers and timing chain cover. the oil pump we replaced because it wasn't a costly item (around $20) and i was gonna have to pull it off while replacing the rear main anyways..

the oil pump drive shaft was replaced mainly because it was a $6 item and also because of the fact that when i turned the motor over on the stand it fell out due to the nylon lock ring being split in several places.

the last picture is of all the bolts that mainly weren't needed...the timing cover came with new chrome bolts and the one piece oil pan gasket (which as cake to install) also came with new pan bolts.... as for the acorn nut covers....they looked retarded on the motor and neither Ivel nor myself were a big fan of them...

okay, that should be it! i promise!
