I spent about 4 hours this morning finishing stripping all the suspension. The crossmember gave me a little bit of grief. One of the horizontal bolts that goes into the welded on square nuts twitsted off. I tried welding a nut on to it but couldn't get a strong enough weld. I went to wack it with a hammer to try and loosen it and it busted the welded nut off oops.

Going to make a run to Lowes to get the lumber I need to bulid the boom for the engine hoist to lift the cab off and to make a dolly for the Cab to roll on.

Well, at least you can weld a new nut on now....just done with my disassembly myself, so I can understand the time and work involved. And am done with everything except caliper/spindle painting. Then reassembly!!!

Your crossmember looks pretty clean though...shouldn't take much to get it prepped for paint. The best part is cleaning out the void on the underside of the crossmember. I was just about able to level out my driveway with all the mud/gunk that came out of it.

This is true.

Well yesterday was an exciting day for me. Finally took the cab off. Went without incident other than the front mount bolts not wanting to come out of the floor. A lot of rust. One of them was almost rusted halfway through.

After the cab was off I cutout the manual trans member. Then it was outside to start sandblasting.

It was a good day. No rain predicted for the next 3 days so hope to get the frame all blasted and the cab is next.

I never cease to be amazed by you guys who do the whole strip down thing.

Hope the rain comes and goes so you can get back to work.

I am on slow speed today. Had another chest infection that floored me this week so brush paint and woodwork only today.

Well I didn't really plan to do a full frame off but the more I dug into the more everything was in bad shape and not road worthy.

Your well wishes helped out no rain today and none for the next 3 days.

I got all of the bottom and outside of rails done. Just have about half of the top of the rails and little bit on the inside. About 3/4 done. Not to bad at all.

I forgot to take pictures of the bottom side. DOH!

I found a cool pic of my grandpa's 64 sitting in front of his 66' Chris Craft.
The truck had a 327 he put a 5/8 cam in with 3 on the tree. The Chris Craft had a warmed over 283. It sounded so awesome when you first cranked it through those water manifolds.


The 64 was his work truck and he was hard on it but kept it maintained well.

This was his baby 72' GMC Sierra Grande. It had the 375hp 350 turbo jet. He kept it garaged and only drove it on the weekends to the lake to spend time on the Chris Craft.

This picture was taken in 81' That is me behind the wheel. My dad currently has this truck and hopefully one day I will get it.

Love the cab dolly. Wish I would have built something like that. Would have been much easier to move around and take off/put on.

No worries. This actually a rare sit to see the Carla II out of the water. It spent 99% of its life in a slip a Lake Meredith Marina in the Panhandle. Only time he took it out was to repaint the bottom. The A/C was quite common on most of the boats in the Marina.

I'm glad I built it to. I saw several different ones here on the forum and thought that's a great idea. Now I can move it outside to sandblast and out of the way if need be.



Well today was a good day. I got some color shot on the frame and I feel like I have hit a milestone. Even though I have a long way to go. Its great to have something looking new and painted.

2 coats of Hot Rod Flatz Black. I originally was going to paint the truck with this but have decided to paint it blue instead. It came out a lot better than I was expecting. I have never used a spray gun before.

I plan for tomorrow is to finish blasting the cross member and the a arms and get some color on them. I need to build something to hang parts from so I don't have to have two painting sessions flipping things over. I have an idea.

My wife was so excited about it painted she asked what I needed to buy next. Wow that was a shock.

Looks great. I remember that feeling of having the frame painted, and finally getting to work on a clean surface again, rather than something with 40 years of mud, oil, etc. Keep up the great work!

Lets hope that is how it goes. First shot of the black I knew something was wrong. The paint can said no reducing required. So I tried it. NOPE a bunch of orange peel. I stopped and put some reducer in it. I looked at the instructions online and it said to do 4:1:1. Not sure why the paint can said otherwise. Plus the kit came with the reducer. Anyways glad I figured that out. I have two guns. A regular siphon and then a HVLP. I used the siphon for the primer. I actually like it better. The black I used the HVLP which laid down smoother but it was hard to shoot the very bottom of the frame so at the end I had to switch to the siphon gun for the bottom of the rails as it worked much better.

Thank you. Yes I do not know what I'm going to do when I don't have to spend 10 minutes of vacuuming after working on the truck for 5.

Yesterday and today I got about 5 hours of sandblasting in. I finished the crossmember and all 4 a-arms. I got them all primed. Plan to shoot them black tomorrow. And then the crossmember is going back in. If I can find some Grade 8 hardware for it. I went to 6 places and still don't have everything I need. I guess nobody uses Grade 8 anymore. Tractor Supply had a whole wall of it by the pound but nothing in 7/16" WTH. I got the nuts and washers at O'riellys. $22. Then I found 3 of the 1 1/2" bolts at ACE. Lowes carries the bolts also but they are out. I asked someone about it last week. He got his Iphone and it said they had 20 but no one could find. They said they would order more. Been a week I stopped by today they still don't have any. Oh well. I bought 3 1 1/4" see if they will work on the vertical holes.

I brought home all the steering components so I could mask them and get them primed. I used a trick I saw somewhere to use Vaseline to mask off paint. It worked pretty good. I like the anodized ends so I wanted to keep the detail instead of painting all of it.

I didn't get a lot done today got started a little later. Got out in the garage and realized I was out of juice. My 9 day marathon finally caught up with me. So I started the Cutlass and took if for a quick spin with the boys.

I already scratched it. Not sure how. I had it covered. Took the cover off and it was scratched. Oh well I can fix it. Its going to happen.

I rolled the engine outside and sprayed it down with Gunk engine degreaser. It did a little. Used the $3 oven cleaner Ive been using on the frame and it worked great! Gunk should be ashamed of themselves.
