Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion

Hey Dub. Great build, I also enjoyed your burb to crew build. I'm sure that you know but the Z71 package is nothing more than shocks, steel skid plates and a sticker. I've talked to quite a few people and did a bunch os resource about this, because I have a Z71 thats my parts truck. Some people say they have a locking diff and higher suspension but I talked to a guy from our Chevy garage here and he said that they are all just different options that can be ordered. Suspension package, locker package and tow package are all different from the Z71 package. I'm not sure if I'm wrong on this, that's just the info that everyones been giving me. I was just wondering because you kept refering to the frame as a Z71 and didn't know if you was doing that strictly out of reference or not? If I'm wrong and you know different please let me know so I can take advantage of the parts before I scrap the Z71 parts truck that I have. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

P.S. Hows the burb to crew build going? You still working on it? And I like your bumper sticker. I live on an Indian reservation in NE Montana.

Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion

You're mostly right about the Z71. It's just Bilstein shocks, skid plates, and the sticker. Some Z71 models did have a 3:42 rear end, but not all. Also, some 88-98 Z71 models have heaver springs [at least this is what I've heard], and something I know, because of how my dad's 2000 is, is that '99-up Z71 models have a lighter spring package. Thanks for the positive feedback though; it's not done either even though it's back together. I have a 3" suspension lift to install in the front, then a lot of other things to get it road legal. Thanks for the feedback on the bumper sticker . It was my replacement bumper, and I didn't feel like taking it off, because it's pretty much true. As for the crew, we're still working on it. It's just on hold until mine is finished and on the road.

After seven long months, not having what I needed to get this damn thing running right, a lot of trial and error and it just being moved around the past several months...UPDATES, UPDATES, UPDATES!!

And now, what I'm working on to get this thing running the correct, and proper way, to completely fix my wiring issues. Completely gutted another parts truck, '90 4x4 Silverado, and going to use the complete harness out of that, which means the old half-moon gauge cluster. But I can live with that.

Got that complete harness out, and started wworking on pulling mine out. Was planning on having it done by this weekend, but work and extremely cold weather are getting in my way.

Thanks, Bill! I didn't plan on it sitting as long as it has, but the wiring wasn't correct. I had several problems: No speedometer, my wipers only worked on high and buzzed like a friggin' bee when the wiper motor was plugged in. Needless to say, wiring problems have been an issue. But I'm running a complete harness that will plug into everything, with no issues. That oughtta solve the majority of my problems....until I find more.

Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion

It's been a good minute since I've posted an update or for that matter even posted on the forums. Anyway, end of February 2014, I got her back together for the most part. Got it running, after a complete 1990 wiring harness swap, inside and out. However, sad to say she's down and out again. Everything works except a few bugs. I'm having severe charging problems, and power problems. Not getting out of its own way. Plan on fixing that when I have time, but working all day everyday is a bit of an issue.
Anyway, thought I'd go ahead and put this out here. When I get back into tearing into the beast and figuring things out, I'll definitely post some major updates.

Why run the old moonie gauges? Took me about 2 hours to install a 1992 cluster in my 1989. :)

Otherwise, great work!

I used to want to swap my '91 moonies to the needle cluster. I still think the needle cluster looks better, but I decided to embrace the moonies until the time I can do the complete interior makeover I really want. I think I spent a little too much time above 85mph and liked that the speedo kept going. :metal:

Weeeeellll I blew up the transmission Thursday night. She's down and out again, this time for a complete overhaul. I'm doing a wiring harness swap again though. I'm going to put a '93 350 and 4L60E with 40k miles in, along with a 14 bolt 6 lug rear swap among other things. But I did get me a little '94 S10 that gets 20 miles to the gallon. I meant to post pics of the 92 but I uh, got distracted.

Thank you guys so much for the compliments though, it means a lot. I think everyone that knew me when I first joined back in 2010, knows this truck has come a VERY long way from the point it was when I got it. So all the positive feedback and the compliments, thank you. Really.

Dub,
Just wanted to say I am very thankful that you have took the time to detail your project. I picked up a truck that I am in love with but all it lacks is 4x4 Your progress gives me motivation. So I might pickup a Z71 parts truck to convert my truck over. Keep posting on your progress and It looks great.:metal: "Built not Bought":metal:

Thank you. Glad I can be of some help with motivation. The 4x4 conversion isn't really all that bad. The frame swapping can suck, but if you do it right then you won't have problems. Good luck and I can't wait to see!

Okay, so, updates from the last several months: Here's a few I had taken before completely ripping my dash apart. Of the truck, cracks in my old dash, and then my free bedliner I picked up and put in during snow

And about a week or so after the seats went in...transmission went and that was all she wrote.

Currently is a yard dog until I tear her down for the final drivetrain overhaul. What comes next, is a secret. Y'all will just have to keep watching and find out. ;)
