Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

After spending some some good time on the truck on Saturday making up a new fuel line, Sunday was a more relaxed day.

Fitted a new Odyssey battery, took it for a brisk ride. And realised just how much I still enjoy this bike. It may be big and bulky, but once you ride off, it does change.

Then washed it.

MOT next Saturday.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sokbn9xp5.jpeg

Also tried to get mate Martins pot blaster to work, after removing damp glass media, tried kiln dried sand..... Fail.

I want to do my cab at home, on the driveway.

I know MacQuigly did his chassis beautifully, so there has to be an answer.

So need to figure out what I am missing. Pressure, media, brains??

Called Real Steel American parts yesterday at 9.30am to order my new transmission seals and some gaskets for when the timing chain cover gets replaced.

Today when I got home from work.....

Tadaaaahhhhh!!!

Parcel had arrived.

Next stop, rebuild transmission, refill ATF and get reunited with motor.

Little jobs all coming together.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Life continues to get in and out the way over here at Grizz Towers.

This weekend I had some plans for the garage......

Never happened, but I got a new MOT on the bike, cut neighbour Mickeys grass, watered all their garden plants and had a haircut.
Some other tasks like resanding all the paving I previously cleaned made short work of the day.

Sunday I spent some time at a bootfair and another 6 hrs cleaning the rest of the paving.

After this I tried to get Martin's blasting pot to work.

FAIL......

MacQuigly has used one to great success, so there is still hope.

It either trickles as weak stream of sand or blows clear air....... Or every now and then it does what it's meant to do, clearing old paint fast.

So half a bag of kiln dried sand looks like this.....

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...siaffazwe.jpeg

Resulting in this after about 20 minutes of trying to get it to work.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s8h5zakdy.jpeg

Advice...???

In other news, Mate Dennis ended up spunking $850.00 on two new bedsides in Kansas City, and then promptly cut them up today......

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s2wcf1kqd.jpeg

He has had to move the wheel arch forward to get it central and also to fit the NASCAR chassis he is using for his build.

Balls of steel.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sqybbbgbv.jpeg

More later.

Rian, Try playing about with the valves that deliver air and sand. You sometimes need to find tune these. Even with 270ltr of air I still have to wait for mine to "catch up". These do still use a hell of a lot of air.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

I still have to learn mine, someday, I have one that works in conjunction with the pressure washer. I have seen folks use them with success, I just haven't gotten mine out of the box yet.

Thank you very much for the reply Bill.

I told Martin that there may be sweet spot in setting the four levers in the pot system.

Ahhhhh yes, New tools in boxes, I have some of those too.

Still, discovering them later is fun too

Maybe I will have to rent a bigger unit, or depending on how mate Martin's comes out, I may take it in and spend the £250.00 to get it blasted and primed with two pack.

Mobile compressor.

If I were a betting man, I would say that the dates in the side of the receiver are inspection dates and at some point the reciever appears to have been rated at a safe working pressure of 50 psi

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Rian, Im also using mine at about 125psi. If yours is ponly 50 it may not be man enough and what Ive found happens is the delivery hose just fills with sand and clogs up.

I went OTT and bought the biggest compressor I could find that would run of a 240V supply, so now I HAVE to do this myself of my other half will bury me with the compressor!

Thanks guys.

Here is a posting I did in November 2013 when I got the compressor.

Looks like plan B is looming.

Fetched the compressor last night in mate Jon's VW T5 van.

What a heavy bit of kit, nearly killed the two of us to get it in the van, so we left it in the van last night and tonight after work Jon and Martin, along with myself got it out using a coupleof sections of pipe and a pait of scaffolding boards.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3169f9bd.jpg

Too dark for pics in its temporary resting place.

So I just took a few pics of the plates on its various parts.

Seems it was built on 12 November 1973, so 40 years old.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0ffdc3eb.jpg

1.5 bhp single phase electric motor

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0781738e.jpg

Air filter...... Made in England too.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0673bf8c.jpg

Name says a lot.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps39d3559d.jpg

Plans include getting some trolley wheels under it, cleanup and repaint, service.

Then use it for painting the truck and other jobs.

Yes, I get that Chad.

If you look at that pic I posted, it's sand everywhere as well and no progress.

I did manage to reseal the rest of the paving out front yesterday, and used all the sand I has swept up after the test run.

One bag down, one more to try to set up the machine.

Bret has written some great advice on Garage Journal.

Just a quick question. Are you sifting the sand with some screen? Even the sand I buy at the home store I have to sift it as it has large stuff that clogs the nozzle. Also if you are not getting enough sand the valve at the bottom of the pot is what you use to adjust the sand volume. On mine I don't use the valve at the end of the hose like yours has. I turn it on from the valve going into the pot. If you don't have a deadman valve and try turning it off with the valve you have on the end of your hose it will always clog.

And I know it was mentioned about the cubic feet per minute. My compressor is around a 11cfm and I can blast continuously. But that all depends on what that blaster uses.

Been under the weather the last week, ended up in bed,Friday, started antibiotics.
Yesterday and today still slow motion, as everything makes me real tired and out of breath.

Today I got stir crazy by afternoon, so did a lazy job, sanded and prepped this coffee table for Nicola as it had pen damage, gouges etc and years of grime and wear, followed by an extended period in a garage before she got it for £9.99

Belt Sander, then hand sanded, followed by cleaning the grooves and keying the rest of the wood.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...skjgpxtto.jpeg

Three coats of clear varnish........

And a Catscan later.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...swnf0zttx.jpeg

A few other light yard jobs saw me get out and come indoors early.

So much for starting on my transmission this weekend.

Hopefully next week.

My personal life is taking its toll on everything also too, as soon as stuff is sorted I will be back on the truck, in the mean time, please just enjoy the distractions, they keep me sane.

Grizz1963 06-26-2016 04:10 PM

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

And another weekend has come and gone.....

Yesterday I went to help a "new friend" whom I had not met before.

It's kind of a long story, about 25 years ago, I restored a 1963 VW Beetle, and needed a few parts, as you do.
I had also owned 1959 Beetle after that.

Craig's dad had Kritzingers Garage in my home town of Port Elizabeth in South Africa. So that's where I bought my spares.
I was also involved in the whole off-road racing scene at the time and a lot of cars ran various setups as Sandmasters etc, and again I would have used spares from there.

Fast forward to April 2016 and I get a PM on Rods n Sods from a guy who by his own admission, does "Binge-Reading" when he discovers something interesting, and of course he has identified the license plate on my old VW Beetle from 25 years ago.
It quickly becomes clear that we have a lot in common not in the least his love for quirky, different stuff, recycling etc.
So we switch to mobile phones etc.

It turns out that Craig has bought and is waiting for a 1947 Chevrolet Fleetline Aerosedan..... I was very nearly an owner of one 25 years ago when I started working in the Pharma industry.

THIS IS CRAIG'S CAR:

http://retrorides.proboards.com/thre...auty-awakening

Anyway, fast forward a few weeks and his car lands and gets delivered, but he has a load of prep to do so that he can prepare some space on his typical UK narrow driveway so that he can work on the car. Last weekend I was sick in bed, but this week at 88% healthy, I was at his place by 09.00 on Saturday after stopping by at mate Martin's place to drop of some heavy duty straps n ratchets I have found him cheaply at the previous bootfair.

Craig has been fighting this Ivy and overgrowth the last few weeks in his spare time after work, and in between looking after his young family.

So when I got there, it was the 10cent tour, then onto just cutting piles of Ivy into ton bags, and moving roots etc out to the street.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...swu1pojwk.jpeg

So it went on and on......

Craig being a Bantam weight managed to stand on one leg like a Ninja on top of a concrete pillar and clear the Ivy off the roof from the neighbours side, fortunately she was away for the weekend. After the Ivy was removed from where it had grown there was a thick layer of soil and compost to remove next.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s3f1r5vcz.jpeg

Clearing the roof, best done with good supervision...........

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...swbpdxdpt.jpeg

Typically South African, we worked till about 4pm and then cleaned and cleared up everything, started a fire......

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...spkx8rlfk.jpeg

After eating ourselves silly on a pile of meat that would scare a T-Rex, salads etc followed by coffee, desert sorted out by Mrs CraigRK we went back to the garage and started exchanging and trading tools and toys. Craig and I are of a very similar mindset, except he is clever and has OCD, he had some bits set aside for me, and could not remember where they were, so straight onto the iPad and a spreadsheet....... "Ahhhhh, box no 24" he said and pulled out some nice new bits for me to add to my collection of air tools at home.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s9kxqdnuw.jpeg

I had agreed to trade Craig for a small horizontal compressor for a vertical one he had previously Wombled when he skip dived a pile of treasures on the way back from his school run after dropping the kids off. The little compressor, which is not that little, will be going up inside the replica petrol pump I made a while back, in front of the garage.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...szbsmpual.jpeg

Next up a gift........
One of the pavement specials, already tested...... Wet tile cutter.
Note the standard South African patented Toe-Teckters in focus. An honest coincidence.

TESTED......

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s2lgwt8ad.jpeg

Then............

The best thing of the day, well, my day at least.
I have been in the market for a new cordless drill for a while.

Enter: 1x charger, 2x Cordless drills, 3x rechargeable batteries.

What a way to end the day. Totally made my week, let alone my day.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sxj8erk48.jpeg

Craig also gave me a load of storage boxes, some number plates to trade and some more garage storage solutions. Thanks, mate.

And finally a couple of pics of the car, for the rest, and there are a lot of them, take a look in Craig's build thread.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...spzq4mmky.jpeg

Love this car.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...stklrdaky.jpeg

Eventually left the hospitality of Villa CraigRK at about 8.30pm to return home.

That was Saturday in a flash.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Had a new front tyre fitted this week and went for a ride on the bike, up to Eynsford and met up with a few good old friends for a drink.

Also saw a Ford........

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sd58oyq6x.jpeg

Today, after bootfair and going to look at a house, I eventually made it into the garage for a few tasks, followed by a job I have been missing out on for a while.

Opened up the transmission to replace filter n gaskets.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sfjjsup4q.jpeg

Can you see the Robot?

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...slegl63xa.jpeg

I also replaced the front and rear seals while I was in there, though to the naked, untrained eye, they did look perfectly fine.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s4vdz4ho7.jpeg

Interestingly, the filter clearly was doing its job before.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s4m7wj6oi.jpeg

Happy to have this done too.

Weekend over.

Hey Dale,

Kinda embarrassed to admit, but no, I did not.

The reason is two fold.

#1 Chicken **** to try it.

#2 GM spent millions in R&D to get transmission just right, maybe it's not needed.

Thank you for your kind and generous offer John.
What I will say is that the postage is genuinely prohibitively expensive.
So you need to think about it carefully.

Rian, whenever I hear the term "shift kit", it makes me smile. When I was in high school (OMG 35 years ago!) I drove a 1970 Chevy Belair with the usual... 350, mild cam, headers, etc... and TH350 with a shift kit. Every day, I'd have a full car load of my GF and buddies with me coming or going...

I didn't tell anyone that I was installing a shift kit, so on the Monday morning after picking up my bro's... I wound 'er out in first, then hand-shifted (on the column) into 2nd. When it bang shifted in to 2nd it was so funny to see all six heads snap back. My passengers were surprised, then everyone howled with laughter. Yeah, kinda dumb... but it doesn't take much to amuse me!

Another weekend gone.

Amazing how time is just flying by at the moment. It is the middle of the year already.

I have been keeping busy with various distractions that needed doing, and continue to need doing. It has allowed me to kind of focus away from stuff that was messing with my head. That's the joy of home ownership and life in general.

This weekend was interesting, it may have no meaning to most of you, but I recently reached a pivotal point in my life, and also the ownership of this house, and one of the things to do was to remove these two hateful creepers form the garage walls, they are messy, interfere with the CCTV and alarm systems, plus they look poop. In short, I have always hated them as their leaves ended up in piles everywhere as well as inside the garage every time the door was opened.
Nicola always laid claim to them, but they now belong to me, so I decided they had to go as part of my purging, and at the same time the garage can get cleaned up, painted and the paving could get cleaned up in front of the garage like I have done to the rest of the property recently.
I had planned on going over to Craig's place in Leatherhead today to help him here: http://retrorides.proboards.com/thre...auty-awakening but realised my jobs would not get done by themselves. Especially after my two bootfairs that took three hours to do today. Managed to find him some great power socket extensions for his workshop for silly money.

So this was what I started with.........

Started to cut them down and it was clear the mess would be needing further attention.

Step one done........

Today's bootfair cost me around £45.00 in the end, with various items I am not going to add in here, but there were these saws, the long one, along with a very near new concrete mixing shovel cost me £10.00 of which £8.00 was for the saw.
The same seller also had the other three saws for £5.00 which I was happy to pay.

The idea is to go this route (image from Google) with the normal sized ones and then the large one, as a nod to my paternal grandfather who was a forester, may be just restored and mounted somewhere in my house to remind me of my roots.

I also managed to find a load of other stuff from one vendor who does clearances in France, including this old rotary telephone in a funky colour, which will be an ornament in the house, yes I love quirky stuff like that. I had seen one for £28.00 at one traders table, and another lady had two of them in cream that she wanted £15.00 each for.......... So the £3.00 this one cost me, pahhhh..... Burger money.

By 11.30 I was up the ladder, with my trusty pressure cleaner, having removed all stuff that would get in the way.

By 16.00 the front and drive were all done, cleaned and everything packed away.

My neck had gotten a good beating from Mr Sun who had been hesitant to show his face all day.

And by 17.30 it was all dried up. And the clouds had gone mostly.

Next weekend the jobs include prepping of the walls, crack filling and then paint plus painting the wooden door frames.

I also need to replace one of the cap tiles right at the front of the roof.

Weekend over, no truck time, but loads of good stuff done, that needs to be done anyway.

Truck time will resume in all earnest very soon though. But bear with me for a while, I need to deal with ****e in the mean time.

Time for a Rum and Pepsi Max methinks.

Thank you. These are jobs that just need doing.

Get well first John, then take on the world.

There will always be tomorrow to sort out your place.

Yes, it's an old pic, but the sentiment stays the same.

Wow, is Ivy that invasive over there or is that decades of 'neglect' to get that bad?

The 'after' pics looks great!
