Everything I've read says they're 2 different things. . . ....

DOD is supposed to delete the firing of sequential cylinders under "limited load" situations @ fixed-rate RPM. What I've read is this means it kills 4 of the 8 cylinders under consistent, constant, light load conditions which theoretically will increase mpg 10~15% on the highway. This seems like it would be tough for an aftermarket/non-mass produced application to maintain its funstionality.... IDK.

The VVT adjusts the cam phasing so the motor is more docile @ idle (producing better efficiency & reduced emissions) yet can maximize output as the cam timing changes throughout the RPM range. This should make an already efficient engine even better (potentially more power per unit of fuel burned or less fuel to match current power levels).

Am I close 68ss?

I'm just curious how these things will respond to the 'tuners' tricks. In communications w/Don, he seems very optimistic.

you are right on about that scoti.....
i come to realize there are 2 diffrent L92 out there. the first style has the DOD the second (later) has VVT.... this engine is the later.....there is currently 1 aftermarket cam manufacturer... and tuneing is bout 8X harder then the 'normal' LS1 computer.... there is more tables to mod and diffrent tables at diffrent RPM/load/ temp/ octane leveles etc............

Re: project INCREDIBLE HULK 6.2L with 6L80E

Hhmm. . ..... We need one of these DOD systems w/some turbos.

Switches to 4cyl mode on the road w/slight boost to keep the power levels like a mild 5.3L & then w/a romp of the pedal, it comes alive on both cylinders & boost like a LS7 on roids.

 Mo powa.

got the 23 gallon aluminum fuel cell, mounted up. i had to remove the rear crossmember to mount it, but the rear hidden hitch will make-up any rigitity that was lost..... i welded the nuts to the inside frame , so it wont be a pain should the fuel tank need to come out...... also started to work on the accesseries, got the starter cleaned/painted, and the P/S and ALT bracket cleaned/painted, and the P/S pump itself will be blasted and painted tomorrow, then it'll all be reassemembled and installed back on the engine... and lastly here are the 1.5" lowering blocks that i blasted and alodined..

He makes it look easy doesn't he?

I took the plunge & just looking @ the motor/trans in stock form is over-whelming right now. I wan't to start stripping it down to necessaties (eliminate all the late model requirements), but I'm worried I won't know where it all goes back if I remove too much  .

Re: project INCREDIBLE HULK 6.2L with 6L80E

You are doing one heck of a job on this truck, I am very impressed!
I just bought a 5.3L/ E4L60 that is one of those DOD motors but have been told by several aftermarket Companys that it is not worth keeping that way. I was told it is not go into 4cyl mode like I thought it would. It only shuts off the 4cyl's for about 1.5sec every 30-45sec. If it shut them off for any longer it would do damage to the cylinders, valves, rings and what ever else. The MPG gain is even lower that the reported 10-15% but for a company like GM it makes a differance for their over all Goverment mandated program so they can bring us toys like the LS7. I am dropping my 5.3L into a 51 Ford F1 that I am building for a shop truck and figured this was the best way to fix a Ford:lol:

How much clearance do you have between your front tierod and the Height monitors? I looked at mounted them their but was not felling too comfy with how close it was looking at steering lock and full bump so I mounted them off the frame and Z'd the link.

Also what year did they start the DOD and VVT on the Vortec's?

Re: project INCREDIBLE HULK 6.2L with 6L80E

kevin,
dunno who you talked to at what company.... but how it works is the ECM sences the throttle position, and load. if its within the limits it'll shut off 4 cyl. indeffently to conserve fuel....
how it does this is through oil pressure to 'special' two piece lifters....when in the 4cyl, mode the outer part of the lifter moves with the cam, but the inner part does not move.. I E the pushrod nor valves move either...when the ECM sences a change in the load (going up a hill), or more gas (pedal position chages outside the limits) it switches back to 8cyl. mode... it does this in meer milliseconds and cant not be detected, other then the exhaust tone....as a matter of fact those DOD cylinders receive less ware do to this function....

Scoti,
welcome to the club.....you know we'll require a thread with pics:)

got a little progress to report,
switched to a f-body oil pan and windage trey (for better ground clearance),evrything looked good on the internals too, and got some braided stainless steel fuel line with AN fittings ran.....

where did you get your lower kick panel patch panels? I love the way you mounted your front ride height sensors, awesome build!
