Re: Mcgaughys Big Brake Kit

I didn't have any problems with the rear, it's just a bit labor intensive and requires a little machine work on the axles. For the price... A+.

So all in all would you guys reccomend this kit both front and rear? Seems like the front is a breeze to install, but seems like a lot of you guys are having problems with the rear.

I definetly want to go big brakes on my 86 but wondering if I should look at other options

I recomend either the CPP or Willwood Big Brake kits. Straight bolt on, no machining, no grinding, and no extra work fitting the brackets required. You get forged aluminum hubs. CPP has every bolt pattern 5 and 6 lug.

X2!!! For the money you cant beat it. Nate Porter said it was "the best bang for your buck" when I picked the brakes up from his shop. I'd have to agree

Oh, I agree y'alls stuff is nice, but I wanted the matching 13" front & rear set up. And my cast hub works like a charm :). But I am a huge fan of CPP.

I finally got the front kit installed along with the rest of the new suspension and steering parts. I was hoping to finalize the install today, but ran into a small issue with the new corvette style m/c & p/v from CPP; the m/c uses a longer pushrod than the stock m/c and it didn't come with it...kinda disappointing, but hopefully I will be able to find one next week...Any suggestions on the application?

Here's a couple of pics of it sittin', can't move it yet :( I also included a shot of the Blazer prior to the new suspension just to give you an idea of the difference of before & after :metal:

Did you ever find out what the deal is on this. Buying some DJM dropped spindles now and want to upgrade to bigger brakes later

Re: Mcgaughys Big Brake Kit

McGaughys kits have the back of the spindle specially modified to accept a caliper adapter bracket. You could use any spindle, have it custom machined and have a custom caliper bracket made but McGaughys already has something put together.

Welp, mine are on and moving and stopping. The pedal pressure isn't what I was hoping for, but I may have a small line leak that I couldn't find while crawling around in the dirt. I'll be taking it to a friends shop to double check everything on the lift...with a concrete floor under it :metal:.

Looks great! I ended up going with another setup for the front. What are you using for a prop valve?

C10, I used the CPP master cylinder & p/v set-up. I'll post a pic in the morning.

Danny- I would support this 100% if CPP offered a 13" kit for the rear. Your front kit is very well engineered at an affordable price. We just want a rear kit to match.

Re: Mcgaughys Big Brake Kit

^^^Exactly why I ended up with the stuff from McGaughy. I wanted the CPP stuff too, but couldn't get a matching rear. I bought the CPP kit at a swap meet, but ended up selling it to get the McGaughy stuff. I made good money on it ;)

Re: Mcgaughys Big Brake Kit

Well, I finally went to the boneyard and picked up a spare rear end. I even lucked out and got a 12 bolt. Anywhoo, Ive got the template laid out for the corvette calipers but I need to buy a set of calipers, or even 1 side. Anywhoo, the brackets wil be simple and cheap to sell once produced, but to get the ebrake.. the parts alone will cost about 250ish

I remember seeing a baer kit on a c-10... that was retarded looking. a 12" rotor with about (guessing) 2" of usuable rotor matched up to the old lt1 style ebrake bulit in caliper. Serioulsy looked like it was using 50% of the rotor.
Atleast what I am working towards is a matching kit for the rears using real rear parts so ebrake could be an option. Anyway, Once I score a set or one side of corvette calipers I will start a seperate thread.

I found an older (within the last year or so) issue of Custom Classic Trucks yesterday in it they did an install of a CPP kit for the front and rear that used Willwood calipers, and it had a e-brake for the rear. I believe that the fronts were 6 piston, 14" rotor and the rears were 4 piston, 13" rotors. The e-brake was inside the "hat" of the rear rotor kinda like a small drum brake. It was installed on a '79 I think...I will post the issue date/number after I get home.

Re: Mcgaughys Big Brake Kit

I looked into those...but not for long. The front kit is MUCHO expensive...in the neighborhood of $2k+, and the rear is only 12.19" in diameter and $650-$850 depending on options. The front price doesn't include the spindle either. One more reason why I went with this McGaughy kit. I spend less than $1200 for everything shipped to my door, and other than just machining the rear axles, it was a very straightforward install. I would certainly like to have "cooler" looking calipers, but for the money...It can't be beat!

Re: Mcgaughys Big Brake Kit

didnt want to make another thread about front brakes, but dang, this is a huge brake setup for our trucks

http://image.customclassictrucks.com...brakes_kit.jpg

does the McGaughys drop spindle look like this (back side) and thickness.... Im sure my stock McGaughys spindles wernt this thick in the area between the bolt holes.. maybe they were...

http://image.customclassictrucks.com...joint_stud.jpg

if so, dang, I want to buy a set :) can anyone chime in that has bought the McGaughys front spindle brake kit?
thanks

Re: Mcgaughys Big Brake Kit

aggie91 I have looked hard at Wilwood as well as all the other name brands. Even Baer makes a good looking reasonable priced rear kit. Unfortunately the matching front kit gets really pricey on all of them.

The CPP kit is a real bargain compared to the other brands. If they were to make a matching 13" rear, I would go that way. Since they don't (yet), I am leaning toward the McGaughys combo.

Re: Mcgaughys Big Brake Kit

Anyone know a machine shop in Houston that could mill down axles, I will be searching yellow pages here shortly, but word of mouth is better IMO.

:jdp: Those wilwoods looks massive!!! Ill be pulling my Mcgaughys front kit off tomorrow. I got the 13' SL6 wilwoods for the front but I dont think they are as big as the ones in the pic.

Do you happen to know which spindles are being used in the pics?

Those are the 16" brakes that KP (Chris Alston's Chassisworks) offers... can you say $4Gs for front only. We will be doing a build starting in a month or so that's getting these bad boys.
