Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Looks good Cort. It's been a while since I visited your build. That intake and carb looks familiar. I wonder where I saw a setup like that before.....

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Some more progress! I spent about three hours today grinding and grinding and grinding. . . .
Last earlier this week I was able to prime and paint the back walls of the interior and today I masked them off and started grinding on the cab area. Here are some shots. Sorry, I didn't take full shots of the new paint, but one of the photos below shows the difference in hue between the original and new paint. http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...6/IMG_0277.jpg http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...6/IMG_0288.jpg http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...6/IMG_0289.jpg Here is one of the restored heater all put back together. New motor for it and completely blasted and painted: http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...6/IMG_0290.jpg Does anyone have any ideas of what I should use to seal these cracks up with?: http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...6/IMG_0292.jpg |

Looking Good We use this stuff all day on those train & bus car bodies you see when you’re driving around PDX;) When I look at your PIC with the floor pan removed, and the shot of that 4spd trany it brings back a lot memoires of hours spent laying on cold concrete wrestling one of those critters attempting to align the pilot shaft/bushing. (the days before the plastic aligning tools) |

Got some more done in the evenings. Took the vents to work and blasted them and then came home sprayed them. I don't know if you guys noticed, but I really like taking before and after shots....

I really admire your post :metal: Keep up the photos before / after shots, they are helping to inspire me to get my boat finished so that I get started on my 79’ K-30. |

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Thanks 88! Some more progress. I'm not very pleased with a couple spots on the dash so I am going to have to fix them and redo it again I think...but the rest turned out great. I know some people will think I am crazy for not getting in the floor patches before I painted but I am just not ready to tackle them yet (hoping to talk a friend into doing them for me since I am not that great of a welder). When it's time to cut them out and weld in new ones, I'll mask off everything and lay down some fire blankets to keep the new paint from getting ruined.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Awesome work! I would love to come check out your rig and see what is similar to mine and maybe get some tips on the things you have done. You said north pdx... only about a hour away.
Great pictures too. Nice to find a local with almost the same rig. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...um/image14.jpg |

That's cool, I think my boys and I are going to make it to the gathering at Jantzen Beach on the 15th. My rig is not road worthy yet so we will be in the car, but it will be nice to meet and see some other great suburbans and trucks.

1/2 the rigs on the road in Sandy are not road worthy....:haha: |
Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
I'm hoping to make it to the meet up as well. I'll be bringing my square body though.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Hey Cord,
Any idea on what you are going to do on the interior roof ? I haven't decided what to do on mine.I have looked at what other's have done, but i would like to keep it close to looking original with more heat shield under it. |
Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Not sure man. I know SMS auto fabrics has the original stuff but I don't know the price yet. If its not too bad I'll probably just go with that.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Well, not much new to date. Still trying to settle into the New Year. Having this new 60-66 burb section is definitely inspiring me to get some work done!

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Got a little accomplished today. Took my windshield chrome to work and used our stainless polishing wheel to shine them up nice. No pics yet, but they turned out sweet.
|
Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
I was able to pull the 'burb out today and sweep up. The weather is finally nice enough. Here are some current photos. Also, I picked up a 351 V-6 the other weekend and started a tear down on it. I'll be installing it probably next winter. This winter I just need to get the windows all back in and the floors finished.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Here is the 351 currently. Everything is all torn down and, unfortunately, I foudn a spun rod bearing on #3 which means the short block is going off to the machine shop. I was hoping to just throw some new bearings and rings in it and go, but that is not to be. The crank had standard bearings in it though so it should be no problem turning it.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psb3f0d52a.jpg For those of you that don't know, the 351 has a bore of 4.56. Big mothers! http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps3d096da5.jpg All the components are cleaned up and ready for paint: http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps0b0f0e7b.jpg And since I am going to be running TBI on this engine when it goes back in, and nobody in the world makes adapter plates for the Stromberg WWC pattern, I had to design my own adapter plate. I am going to have a buddy machine this up out of 1/2" aluminum for me. http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps5fedea0c.jpg |

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Here's the progress for today. I had to grind all of the surface rust inside the window frames and prime/paint. I got the drivers side done today and hopefully I'll be able to do the pass. side tomorrow and then all of the window frame prep will be completed. I just ordered the windshield gasket, so hopefully I can get that installed in the next couple of weeks.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Progress! So, this week I got my Precision Brand windshield gasket and I installed it onto my windshield last night. I used 3M weather strip adhesive and taped all the hard bends and left it over night. I did the work inside so everything would be at room temperature.
Today I came home and installed the stainless steel trim. I am excited to put this thing in! I'll be that much closer to driving her again. It has been a long 5 months. http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psa3b63ef8.jpg http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psef2dbc03.jpg |

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Cort,
What kind of paint are you using for the interior. Is it special mix spray cans or have been lucky enough to find closely matching colors for the Sub. It is nice that you are doing the interior close to stock, many of these old dashes get hacked up so badly it is tough to fix them. Looking good buddy! |
Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
The interior color I've been getting at Lowe's. It is Rustoleum Stainless Steel. It's a little darker than stock, but I actually like it better and the finish is perfect I think.

Re: '60 GMC Suburban (Project D-Daddy)
Woohoo! Got the windshield in yesterday. And get this: with my girlfriends help, it took us all of 35 minutes!! After all the threads I read where guys have snapped windshields and glass companies have screwed them up, it was super easy, I thought. I am going to write a separate thread on what I did and how it was so easy for me.
