He has cruised it on the street, with slicks(!) but mainly races it. 502 with a big solid when these pics were taken, bigger solid roller now. Straight axle, all-metal flip frontend, Richmond 5 speed, Dana 60 with 4:88, 4500 rpm launch, dump it and hang on, full-power shift to 2nd, picks them up about 6 inches second time. WAHOO! I've driven it and it's mean.

Here's a pass, pulled them higher (and back up again in second) before he added the wheelie bars but the landings could be rough, runs tens, only 'glass is the front bumper

Sorry for the hijack Kabwe, now back to your regularly scheduled build thread :)

Hey Bam:

I finally can come back to your build (pictures).

Can u tell us more about the steering column and size that u used and if u have any pictures of inside and the engine compartment? Did you already hook it up to the rack? I know that u had some of this info on your old build.

Hey Hotrod1,
The brother show will be here before we know it, do you plan on going this year?

I used a flaming rivers 28 inch tilt steering column.

I was curious to penetrate the firewall instead of the kickboard stock hole. To me it makes for a more "car" feel. What was you reasoning and what did you learn about this position? Did it make for a more tricky connection to the power rack? Any difficulty? Thanks

The reason I had to come through the firewall (not my choice) is because I put a Belaire dash in my truck. If I would have went through the toe board I would not have like how it looked on the interior and I will be looking at that all the time. I did the best I could with it coming through the firewall and I still don't care for it but I have to learn to live with it. You pick your poison when you modify. If I did not have a smooth firewall it would not bug me but it looks like a elephant trunk to me.lol Its growing on my though.

Yes the steering linkage was a little more involved by coming through the firewall. Once again pick your poison.lol

Re: Kabwe's aka Bam's build

Not much to report its just that after buying a flaming river column and installing the column in my truck I thought it was too long. I just did not like how far it was sticking out the firewall. I thought I could live with it but I couldn't take it anymore, so I decided to cut it up. It was much easier than I thought.
First I marked where I wanted the column to stop while it was in the truck. The tape line is where it will be cut.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5140/...f4d656b1fe.jpg
I looked down the DD end when I took it out the truck and notice that the DD goes all the way down the column oh now this is easy. The bottom bushing seems to be held in by two dimples so I drilled them out. I can get the bushing out later.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5177/...06846f62ed.jpg
I used a cut off wheel to shorten the tube. When I mark the spot with the tape I used a square to mark the cut line all around the radius of the tube and then taped it so that my cut was square.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5095/...e297f54761.jpg
I removed the bushing using a vise and two hammers.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5257/...455a69544d.jpg
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5091/...4d5d293dc0.jpg
I then used a hand file to smooth the edges of the cut and install the bushing and cut the DD at the correct length and I’m done. This is easy and I thought someone may need to do the same thing so I posted it.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5171/...21e53655c0.jpg
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5092/...bc8bb9e61c.jpg
I think I like it better now.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5258/...7f5758b322.jpg

I was completely shocked at how easy this was it took all of 30 min and most of that was measuring.

Kabwe. That is the same way I just shortened the column in the truck I'm building. Excepted the Southern Rods column had 2 tubes in it besides the DD and I had to turn up a special bushing. I don't know what do if they would stop selling those .045 cut off wheels for a 4.5' angle grinder! I use them to cut alot. Look great.

Re: Kabwe's aka Bam's build

That looks excellent. I am also of the thought that the column cannot extend too far into the engine compartment. I cut mine off using the same method you used, and it turned out great.

Not too many people give much thought about the placement (and style) of the steering column. To me, the column, and especially the steering wheel, are one of the most important parts of the build because every time you climb behind the wheel, it's your connection to the truck.

Have you ever driven a vehicle where the column was mounted all funky and the steering wheel was crappy? It's a terrible driving experience, no matter how nice the rest of the truck is.

Yeah man I've been told I over think things too much and maybe I do but I just did not like it at all. I agree with you about steering columns being to long its very noticeable to me. I care about things that most people don't so maybe its just me, but I think it looks much better.lol

Yeah I'm kind of addicted to cutoff wheels, they are my heroin.lol But a pipe cutter would have been great for this job I could have gotten it done in 10 min. I wouldn't have to worry about squareness with a pipe cutter.

I just going with an aftermarket radiator made for our trucks there are companies that will put the inlet and outlets where ever you want them. You know JML55's 55 has the same engine as us and you may want to pull his ear as to what he used I know when the time comes I may have to.

Ok I see what you were talking about, it does look a lot better. I know you rather have it come out of the toe board of the firewall but it looks clean and neat. It doesn't look like an after thought it looks factory so thats good 'nough.

Re: Kabwe's aka Bam's build

As allways your doing a great job. Just a few thing to think about while your working inside. There are some bumps on the floor behind the seat, these are in the way if you want your carpet to lay down flat. They are also in the way if you plan to build any type of covers for behind the seats. You may want to look into removing them. Also if building a cover for behind the seats weld in any mounts and and supports before you do any painting in the cab. Looks like you'll be done in notime. LOL!!!

Wouldnt take five seasons. They pay you well enough to to quit your day job plus bonuses, have venders supply you with free parts. Allows you to work on truck full time. Only catch is truck must be done in one season.

The catch is my problem.lol I have to stop changing my mind long enough to finish something. But the quit your day job and vendors supplying me with goodies sounds wonderful. Oh I can change the truck again with all the parts I can now get for free.lol I would I'm telling the truth.lol

It was so easy I was ashamed that I stressed over it. I ended up shortening it a little more than whats in that pic, only about a half inch is sticking out now.

I will be running a hydroboost system under the cab with a remote fill reservoir. I also like the look of a smooth firewall.

I got my panels from Brothers trucks. The inner panel was nice but the outer door skin left much to be desired so I ended up must making my own out of 18 gauge metal. The problem with the outer skin was the metal felt too thin and flimsy. The inner panel is a nice piece and when I bought mine the hinge nut panel came separate. I hope this helps and I'm glad you find my build useful. I told you that you would enjoy this site, there are a lot of really nice build going on over here.

I really like how clean this looks. With the fasteners changed (so they dont stick out at all) it will be perfect.

Where did you get this floor column bulkhead fitting? Is this the same universal ball one I see everywhere?

Mine will be going out closer to the toeboard, but I still want that clean look.

Mrdude_1,

You are correct it is the same universal mount that you see everywhere. I really wish I could have gone through the toeboard like you are going to do, but I did not have that option after the dash transplant. The one I have is a flaming river, I bought it on ebay for 70 bucks I believe. I think you can find them cheaper if you don't go with a name brand one.
