Another quick question, how long after your MOT did your V5 arrive?

For the MOT - headlights,indicators....anything else?

Danny

Danny,

Well it still rolls so that part is correct!

Rear is still out but pretty much ready to go back in, waiting for some new bolts to arrive and then all will be good.

MOT is pretty basic - Indicators are fine as they are - changed the headlights and had to get the horn and washers working but other than that just mad sure it is mechanically sound. A great bench mark is 'would you take your children for a ride in it' If the answer is yes then it will pass the MOT.

From sending off the documentation to receiving the V5 was about 5 days - very impressive. I used the 'how to' information on the Rods n Sods site to help me fill out the forms.

Found the wheel nuts so let me know when you are around next.

Also...Do you have West Coast mirrors on Mutley? if so I could do with having a chat.

Hello Paul,

Well it's arrived!so just making a list for the mot! Did you leave the original red indicators on the back then? I was planning on putting orange ones on?

I'll get some pics up when I crack on with it, I have a list of other projects that need finishing for her indoors first before I'm allowed any decent garage time!

I'll PM you about the wheel nuts, I seem to be missing a few!!?

Cheers,

Danny

Wayne,

I am at home today if you are about.

Don't have a full compliment of wheel nuts, think I have 12 or 14, but they are new so should get you out of trouble.

As for rear lights, pre 66 so you are good to go with the reds. Didn't change mine and not had any problems with 2 MOT's and being stopped by the Plods. They wanted to have a quite word in my ear about the excessive smoke emanating from the rear of the vehicle when I pulled away from the traffic lights...Ahem....

Well I have decided to build my own as was always crap with Airfix stuff - spent more time glueing my hands together than building a kit....

Erm....

Well I spent some money...

After pricing up the cost of steel, borrowing a pipe bender, buying a new welders - mine "might" be man enough to cope with the steel, and after a discussion with our very own Mr Stanger I decided to purchase the Summit frame brace as the price difference was negligible. If I had waited another week I would have e been saving money such are the vagaries of the Pound/Dollar exchange rate...

Brace is currently mid ocean.

I have also spent some more cash on a pot sandblaster after the 'Knott Wheel of Truth(tm) failed to get into the nooks and crannies and I read the instructions on the Steel-It can that recommended a rough texture to the steel to make it adhere.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/f22438a24ae0.jpg

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/d70a454a0e47.jpg

Still getting to grips with it as so far I have only managed to spread 2 bags of media around the shed rather than remove anything vaguely related to paint, or corrosion, from a metal object. I thought that my compressor was man enough for the job but was proven wrong - which leads me onto a small detour but a great story....

Paul Y 08-05-2020 01:38 PM

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

So here is a short tale that I am sure will spawn others and it all started with a sand blaster....

A quick recap.

Woody now down to bare chassis, decided to blast the frame, bought sandblaster from Johnny Bravo, my big compressor not man enough for the job.

Right, lets get on with it then shall we.

The way to make the blaster work is to increase the air capacity so a quick look on eBay turns up a 200ltr compressor about 10miles from home for the princely sum of £25- the plan being that I will use the tank from this to give me enough air to get the job done.

Arrange to meet the seller, Steve, at his place of work, jump in the Super Fiesta(tm) with #3 Son and head off into the sunset.

The thing about Essex, well one of the many things, is that you will always meet somebody that says, I designed that when it comes to a Ford and Steve was no exception. As I pulled up the rear seat base to make room for the compressor he suddenly pipes up with - when I designed that there was supposed to be a pin in the hinge so you could take the seat out completely but it got overruled as Ford thought that people would take the seats out and lose them - and so began an hours chat with one of the most interesting guys I have met in a long time.

Started talking about why I needed the tank, which then got onto cars I had owned before he smiled and said, let me show you my Mustang, pulls out his phone and there is a picture of a 69 or 70 Mustang parked in his front garden being used as a planter!

Conversation continues and he then says do you want to see what I am working on now? Cue another flick through his phone and there is a picture of him standing next to an AC Cobra. Now my thought is, rough looking kit car, but my new bestie can already sense that coming and says its a real one and it has a story. I am hooked.

Without going into too many personal details it appears that his father worked at Fords on special projects, one of which was the Cobra. Steve didn't really remember the Cobra when he was growing up but after his Dads past away one of Steves older brothers wrote him a letter in which he talked about the car and the fact it was still - I assume - at the family home.

Problem was it was in a very poor state, the body was wrecked and the engine, a 427, was buried in the back garden! As he put it there was no value in crashed old cars back then so it was just pushed into a corner and forgotten. It must have been in a bad way as he laughing told me that the body was 2" shorter on one side than the other where he had beaten it back into shape...

The point of this little tale, cars bring people together and everybody has a story to tell, just some are better than others. And I now have all the air I will need to get Woody a step closer to the road and a new friend with a Cobra... Bruummm Bruuummm

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/2acce24bb681.jpg

Not Steves actual car!

So...Updates...

There will be some shortly but right at this moment in time work is going mental ( I am the CEO of a 3 year old start up providing location software for the logistics industry so we are a 'little busy')

I have 80% of everything I need to get Woody back to a running driving truck, well apart from a T56 or magnum gearbox, it is just finding the time when I am not required to be a Dad, fix the house, mow the grass, walk the dogs look after my parents blahblahblah...

So if anybody has a cheap cheap T56 they want to contribute to the cause hit me up, otherwise I fear that my target of picking my Christmas tree up will be next year rather than this.

Watch this space - will try and get 2 days in the shed before the end of August to at least blast the chassis, run the fuel and brake lines and get the fuel tank in place. Or not...

Stay tuned.

As for getting anything done... well... no. Brace still mid ocean, work not showing any signs of slowing down - THANK GOODNESS!! - and trying to get the house ready for winter. Plus doing a fund raise...

Will eventually get round to doing something before the weather turns - namely painting the chassis- so please beat with me as I try, and fail miserably, to get my life in some semblance of order...

You are always more than welcome Sir!

Must admit I am rather eager to get the brace on my hands as feel that is the missing piece of ‘motivation’ needed to get the chassis as a roller again.

Then it is just a case of saving my pennies for a gearbox.

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

How the goodness gracious did it get to be March already....

Anyway, since my last missive I spent a lot of time exploring what I didn't like about this hobby, delving in to the deep recesses of my smooth brain and chanted, ad nausium, THIS IS NOT A SHOW TRUCK.

So where are we then...

Spent way too long making my compressor up to the job of running the sand blaster and then even longer trying to find somebody that would sell me the beast media at a price that made it worth while doing.

The first nice weekend after the snow resulted in my dragging the chassis outside and starting the blasting process.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/f7bb91ffb51d.jpg

What I learnt from this process is that it will be the last time I blast a chassis - what an absolute pig of a job. Its not so much the pointing the hose at the chassis and pulling the trigger but all the faffing around with the media, unblocking the gun, sifting the used media, unblocking the hose, collecting the media, etc etc....

Anyway, the end result was a nicely textured surface free of dirt and grime and ready for me to paint.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/ca2b3dc42bc4.jpg

I was going to use 2 pack as I did on my 56 but ended up going with this stuff after glowing reports from a friend of mine who builds off roaders. Seeing it on Hoonigan when they made the Merch truck also made me think it might be worth a try.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/721d52798122.jpg

So today was the day that I decided to stop procrastinating , weather was nice so swept the floor in the garage put the chassis up on tall stands and set the heater on high.

After shaking the can for a good 10 minutes and still not hearing the balls rattling to my satisfaction had a brain wave and hooked the can up to my imitation sawzall and presto chango balls were rattling in no time at all.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/acecd97733e1.jpg

And the end result...

From this...

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/1181a7441e67.jpg

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/cfe3399eccfc.jpg

To this...

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/c1e13d86358b.jpg

Well I am really pleased with it. Paint covers very well, took 2 cans to get it to this stage, and will use another one when I flip it over to paint the top and go over the rest of the chassis again.

Next step is to fit the fuel and brake lines, then put the suspension back together, fit the fuel tank and finally place the engine between the rails.

This should go quite quickly as I have all of the components but then again life might still get in the way again to slow the whole process down!

Until the next time... Onwards!!!!

Progress continues, all be it slowly.

Not sure how many of you out there have got/used a pot blaster but they have to be- simultaneously - both the most useful and frustrating tool ever invented!

The biggest thing I have learnt and would like to share with you, the dear reader is this...

Don’t Reuse the media. It is a false economy. You will end up spending hours collecting it, sifting it and then taking the gun apart to unclog it when you didn’t get all of the debris out of the grit. I bought 5 bags of glass media at £8 per bag and wish I had got 10.

Anyway, Spent all day today taking the front crossmember from this.

And I would say that 4 hours of this was collecting the media, spent sifting the media and unblocking the gun.

Hateful.

Good news is that I only have 3 pieces left to do and 5 more bags of media on the way...

It’s still not a show truck.

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

I have pretty much the same blaster as you.

I blast over my concrete paver driveway, then sweep it all up and sift it into a pail, then sift it again as I pour from the pail back into the blaster. I've run the abrasive through upwards of five times or so before it's mostly powder.

I run the largest tip, which seems to clog less.

I've also built my compressed air system to reduce the build up of moisture, and I try to run another water separator as well as the one that comes on the machine. Dry air is good. I also likely have a much drier climate where I am than where you are, which helps.

When it all works in harmony, blasting is very therapeutic for me; I see progress, and the finish is nice.

And yeah - the more I work on my truck, the less interested I am in "shows." It's a freakin' driver.

Paul Y 03-14-2021 06:11 PM

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

You are absolutely spot on with the nozzle size.

I got my blaster second hand with a number of very good upgrades already done - Including a water separator - but only one nozzle. Trying to find the correct tips for the gun has proved a bit of a challenge so I have ordered a new gun which uses a more readily available nozzle, plus it comes with a pack of 5 so should be good for a while.

Hoping that, along with fresh media, will speed the rest of the process along.

More progress next week, life permitting.

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

Had hoped to move good old Woody on a little more this weekend but had my jab on Friday afternoon, a very slick operation but left me with a headache and feeling a bit lethargic so the last thing I fancied doing was spending the weekend in a cold garage.

However, by Sunday afternoon I was bored so decided that a little forward progress was better than none at all.

So I went out into the shed and started sorting through my scrap pile.

Not ideal but a good start.

I knew I had some rollers from when I made a set of draws for my daughters wardrobe.

And so I spent the next hour making a straightener for brake and fuel lines.

Mark, mark.

Drill, drill.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/81f6bf47662a.jpg

End result was this little contraption.

Which actually works on both brake line and a bit of scrap fuel line so next week will actually be making up these very parts so...quite useful...

Nothing too exciting but progress is progress!

Until next time.

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

Still not feeling the full ticket after being injected with Chinese Bat flu so went and had another look at the Heath Robinson straightener.

Two things will need immediate remedy.

1. It needs to be longer (Narf Narf)

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/43c9a8a9a701.jpg

As the bent or curled tubing is passed through the rollers it has a habit of jumping off and then getting itself all mangled - the exact opposite of what I am trying to achieve.

2. Springs.

A little light pressure from a pair of springs will also help in making sure that the tubing is held in place without undue downward force from the wing nuts, challenge is going to be finding a pair of said springs so might just resort to enlarging the hole on the top bar to make it move up and down a little more freely.

Also got confirmation that another 6 cans of Steel-It are on route so will have more than enough to finish it all off and have a few cans spare.

Onwards!

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

Today was a bit of a big day.

I actually started putting new stuff back on to Woody rather than taking old stuff off - a rather nice feeling.

First job was to mount the new fuel tank at the back of the bed rather than keeping me company in the cab. 2 main reasons - as already stated - didn't really want to share the same space as 15 gallons of fuel and needed a tank capable of taking an electric fuel pump for the LS.

There are a few options when it comes to tanks but I ended up going with a Jeep tank and a Blazer fuel sender, pump basket. Main reason is that it was what I could get but lets just pretend that it is for some other really good reason...

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/e24219749c72.jpg

Wanted to mount the tank as high as possible so that it didn't hang down below the bumper and become too obvious but not so high that the fuel lines interfered with the bed wood.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/01b34115b789.jpg

That will do fine then.

Next job was to decide how to mount it. The great thing about C10's is that a lot of people have done a lot of things to them so you can usually find a few options when it comes to deciding how to do something.

Problem was with the rear tank is that a lot of these options seemed to dictate the use of angle iron and I was looking for something a little more...OEM...

So with that in mind purchase 4metres of 30 x 3 flat bar and started to come up with a plan using a trusty bit of cardboard.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/27f27dd99b55.jpg

I don't own a sheet metal brake so tried to bend the flat bar in the vice but couldn't get the sharp, crisp bends I was after plus, I needed to replicate the shapes at least twice so decided to see if I could make something quick and dirty utilising my press.

First thing was to cut up a bit of the dreaded angle iron.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/19658cee9eb9.jpg

Then a bit of old exhaust pipe was cut to size and welded to one of the bits of angle.

And... Voila!

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/1f99dd4e7607.jpg

Pretty crude but it did the job and made bending the bar quick, easy and repeatable. V2 will be incoming shortly after using it as there are a number of short comings but overall count me pleased.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/de82cd56f3bc.jpg

Anyway.. Bend, Bend. Oh plums....

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/745001f27b0e.jpg

Never mind quick session with the hammer and we have 3 upper braces .

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/2505ad63d042.jpg

Next is to make the bottom cradle. Measure measure

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/b9171c74d61b.jpg

Cut, Cut. Bend Bend

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/4ed48d6da89b.jpg

And a quick test fit.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/e56cdce47cb8.jpg

Actually used my new Rivnut tool today but soon discovered that the chassis steel is a little too thick for it. Never mind, just used some long M8 bolts, will trim down later but for now just needed the adjustability.

Pretty pleased with that so next stage was to box up the end that I will be using to put tension on the cradle as I snug it up agains the top braces.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/c0b623a9d017.jpg

And there we go, tank mounted.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/f33ed3005344.jpg

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/7c2247e5701c.jpg

Now I have it in place will move one of the top braces closer to the centre of the tank as decided to route the fuel lines along the passenger side rail rather than the driver side.

So with the tank in place I can start to plan and build the fuel lines. I must admit that I took 5 minutes with a cup of tea at this stage and felt genuinely happy that after what has been an incredibly stressful 5 years I am now starting to build Woody to the vision I had right at the beginning of the journey.

Nice.

I had been collecting fuel fitting for the past few years and keeping them in a couple of tin biscuit boxes so it was rather pleasant to take them out of the packaging and put them to use.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/db535ebfa7d7.jpg

First thing was to make up a mount for the bulkhead fittings to take the braided line from the tank to the chassis and hard lines.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/1854c3f389c7.jpg

Fittings out of the box and...

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/7057a0fab4e1.jpg

Loosely put together.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/41b95c3f8079.jpg

That is as far as I got but really got my Mojo back and will try and sneak some time this week to get the lines ran before I take the tank etc out for the last time to finish painting the chassis and tank braces etc.

Been a good weekend.

Not long now.

Need to find a money tree to buy a T56 Rian - pretty sure I have everything to finish Woody apart from that, well major items.

ONWARDS!!!

Thanks!

A long way behind you but trying to do a little every weekend.

One I have mocked up the lines and repainted the chassis - well put another coat on it - I will be fitting the brace, from there it is all down hill... Yeah Right!

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.

So... Remember this biscuit tin full of rather expensive hose fittings?

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/db535ebfa7d7.jpg

Yeah well they are not compatible with teflon hose which is what is needed with todays ethanol fuels.

So that is about £150 I will have to find then and there was me being all Mr Smarty Pants having got friends to bring back bits and pieces over the past 18 months on their travels back from teh USA... BumHats.

Anyway, let's continue shall we....

Need to run the fuel and return lines down the chassis through one of the crossmembers and to the front of Woody's chassis. A small problem to overcome was this.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/6740659deb90.jpg

No way of fitting a power tool in there to make the required space so 30 minute with a number of files provided the needed space. Problem was that I was really not happy with where the previously made bracket for the bulkhead fittings sat. It had to be far enough through the crossmember to allow the lines to be disconnected if I ever need to to do so but not protrude through so far that the flex lines from the tank could not be attached and removed if I needed to drop the tank.

Spent an hour moving it, looking at it, measuring it before I finally just said to myself that I was being an idiot, and tacked it in place. Its not ideal but nobody will ever see it and it means I can move on.

NEXT!

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/c3c2556137c6.jpg

Now. can get to use my pipe straightener in anger!

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/b6be5ba4a81f.jpg

Pleased to report it worked very well for being made up from some old scrap I had.

Used my rivenut tool again to make use of some nicely positioned holes already in the chassis to attach the P clams and hold the fuel feed in place.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/e76e617d6d26.jpg

Rinse and repeat with the return line.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/d7e47b0882b8.jpg

And the fuel lines are run.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/33193c747c58.jpg

Really quite pleased with that.

Now. How to get them from inside the frame rails to above the rail without getting it close to the exhaust and future China WhirlyBoiz.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/e3b761eb2544.jpg

Yup that will work.

Or actually no it won't...

Can you see the problem?

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/dcbb011de1f9.jpg

As I said previously...mistakes were made. I hadn't seated the return line hose end fully home when I drilled the hole for the bulkhead fitting - end result is that when I tightened it up it came off. Plums, as the Fox Picture now dictates I say.

This now gave me two problems.

1. The hole was in the wrong place.

2. I didn't have any more olives.

Luckily I had just enough -6 pipe left to remake the return so problem 1 went away. Problem 2 can be fixed but not until Tuesday so was feeling a little miffed as I had planned to get Woody back on his feet by the end of the long weekend.

Well I would have if the paint I had ordered had actually turned up on Thursday...

I had one can of paint left in the cupboard so painted the inside of the chassis rails and prepped the brace brackets for paint so at least I could get that done.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/50b10aa52ac3.jpg

Whilst I waited for that to dry, read the instructions that came with the brace and discovered that I need to take out 4 more rivets on the forward body mounts in order to get the front brace plates fitted.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/5b4c0ef3804d.jpg

A quick go over with a flap disk and a few minutes with the drill and they were out.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/b9bc8cb3ea11.jpg

Brace plates in place.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/7724820ca30c.jpg

And time to honk the jungle gym into place.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/23fca3d5b451.jpg

Only problem was it wasn't going to fit.

So, loosened off the front crossmember pulled out the ratchet straps and my big mallet and.....

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/10f720455038.jpg

Its in - even if it is temporary because I needed a little Mojo Boost after the previous mistakes.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/9b39d0549aa7.jpg

The quality of this kit is really quite good, well actually very good...

And on that BombShell I retired for the evening as I have gone as far as I can until the paint arrives and the shops open to get the olives to rectify my previous mistake.

https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/pauly/2a3014c8eb6a.jpg

So until next time...

Onwards!

How you could fit the brace with the body in place is beyond me. It was a struggle with the chassis basically down to nothing!

Will look forward to seeing your progress, think that makes 3 of us now that have gone the summit brace route.
