Well I attempted to patch my passenger rear fender today due to fenderwells being cut. Didnt go so well. Even though the longest weld I did was about an inch. This thing has more waves then macys thanksgiving parade. So I guess later on I will buy another patch and reattempt it.

Alight, so between fixing this fender, adding the door corner, few mechanical tinkerings here n there(when I get frustrated on bodywork). I finally have some pics to post.... before I go on vacation.

in the middle of all that, I had to open the pool, fix the gutters, mowing, and towing a friends truck that split the block. Plus I do photography as well, so I had a shoot with some pageant girls.

Can you give me the details on you wheel spacers? Thickness? Cost? Where? There was no lug spacing change right?

Dale99 07-03-2013 05:36 PM

Re: Project 30 years sitting

Correct on wheel spacers. They were 1". The trick was finding some with SAE threads. I should have the receipt somewhere. Will try to dig it out. Also, the lugs on the truck had to be slightly cut down. So if you dont want to do that, I would try a 1.25 spacer.

:edit: Quick search, i think this is the site I got them from. http://www.wheel-spacers.com/6x55-6x...m-Hub-P53.aspx

Re: Project 30 years sitting

As for updates. Not much has changed on the truck. I took 9 days off for a vacation. However, On that trip I found a good tailgate. It is home, it has a few dents on the inside of it that need pulled out. I also found a good passenger fender that needs no patching. tailgate has already arrived and that is on my list for this holiday. Fender is still in route.

Re: Project 30 years sitting

Thanks. Finding 1" spacers is hard enough, getting the SAE was my problem. thanks.

So here is my tailgate soon as it got home. The fender while still at the parts yard. I got my second grill in the truck last night. Doubt you could tell in the previous pics that the original grill was bent from hitting a tree.

The other car is a little item I moved for my boss. He bought it for his daughter and son-in-law to put together.

Re: Project 30 years sitting

So I my fender has arrived. I also got more primer, and some of the factory color so I can plaint the insides of the fenders. So last night I took the whole front of the truck apart for that.

Plan is to have it back together for saturday afternoon for the monthly car gathering.

Ive also been re-reading info on carbs. I think I am going to richen my primary jets. I guess it came stock as 59/60 jets. I got it with 56/61 and seems to be running lean IMO.

There is a tool that you screw into the sparkplug hole, and it will show you what color your fuel mixture is burning, then you can make adjustments from there

Its called Gibsons color tune, used to use it to set up twin, and trip carbs, on engish sports cars

That GMC fender gave me the perfect paint scheme for my truck

ok, Its actually "gunsons". Took me a minute to find it. I like. I cant seem to find a "multi-kit" that comes with all plug sizes.

Ive checked and most sbc's are 14mm. I just wish they had a "master kit" I guess would be the best phrase??

My truck started looking like a smurf again today :)

So Ive ordered alot of piddle stuff, and about to place another order. Truck was back assembled by Saturday evening for the local show-n-shine. I also sanded the primer off the hood, and re-did it to help fill in the rust pits. Next up will be getting the new tailgate on so I can take the old one and some other crap on a scrap metal run.

So I'm still editing wedding pics from my vacation, as well got a call late last night for a photoshoot to happen this evening. So not alot of truck work going on. I did get started on the tailgate. I found several dings and will end up putting some bondo on several small spots. The red spots were all I thought it had. Still better then the rust holes in the gate I have now. I will have to say thanks to 4 neighbor kids (2boys, 2 girls) for helping me on this. They actually offered to help hand sand.

Very productive day. Started out priming the outside of the tailgate. Then got it installed. Went swimming with some friends. Then went back at it, sanded down right rear quarter and door. Then primed that. So one whole side is now one color. :metal:

bad info. Missed a dent in the tailgate. The pass door, I suspected a rust spot. Sanding confirmed it. Rear quarter, found rust spot, and a small crease. I didnt bother to fix these today, will work on them some other time. Ive debated on getting new doors anyway.

I just read your thread from start to finish. My hat is off to you for both the build and the story that goes with it. Good luck and congrats for a job well done.

Thanks. Since I found it close, I have had people come up to me and tell me stories about riding in it, etc. One of the people I know fairly well and comes down and helps on occasion. I know the back seats not a virgin, how the dent got in the left rear, how the grill got dented, and when/what the original transfer case was exploded.

I still have plenty to do on it. This summer heat and other events are kicking my butt.

So not alot of work on the jimmy. I pulled the wiper cowl back off to fill in the antenna hole. Also installed a set of LED tail lights. Having issues with them. Also pulled the left inner fenderwell and soaked it in gas to soften the tar buildup and scrape it clean.

Amongst all this, a friends truck got backed into. So he got a new bed that was the wrong shade of white. So painted it.

Also, had a pool party and a very large friend went off the diving board before I could tell them it had a weight limit. Broke the base :o So hunted around and could not find a direct replacement base. :waah: So I'm fixing this one.

So after scraping the left fenderwell, I put it back in unpainted knowing it was coming back out soon. Started on the passenger one and found a bullet hole :metal:. I thought about keeping it in it, but after seeing water had sprayed thru and was running down n rusting the back side, I decided to hammer it shut and do a quick weld, and painted it. The difference from side to side is night n day.

I had worked on the horns while drivers side was out, and neither worked. So since I didnt know how a horn actually worked, I took one apart. Cleaned it. Put it back together, it works but sounds VERY sick.

Thanks to hgsnotes I was told about a trailer hitch that would work. Found one of them for a decent price and got it in. Started test fitting it and need to drill some holes.

Got a bedcover for the daily driver to hide my gear while towing or doing my photography.

Diving board is almost finished, need to drill 4 holes for some straps im making to hold it down. Just in time to bolt it down and close the pool for the year
