Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
No problem, Bret!
We put in a solid five hours today prepping and priming the firewall, cowl, etc. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190197.jpg |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Today we welded up a little rust we found yesterday, removed the rusty A-pillar drip rails, and continued stripping old paint and seam seal.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190231.jpg Stripping away the old seam sealer revealed deteriorated A-pillar drip rails on both sides. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...8ed29ead44.jpg We were both relieved to see that the A-pillars weren't rusted through. They're pitted, but still sound. I'll weld in new drip rails once the cab is sitting upright again. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190239.jpg |

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
I borrowed a borescope from a friend yesterday so that we could check the condition of the sheetmetal inside the roof cavity, A-pillars, etc. and determine whether or not we would need to pursue some form of rust treatment in those areas. After all of the rust repair we've done on this cab thus far, I was quite surprised at just how clean it is inside. I did find more insulation in the roof cavity that we'll need to blow/vacuum out of there (thanks, mice), but the sheetmetal is all in great shape. At most, we might use a cavity wax at a later date, but honestly, if the sheetmetal is that clean after the life this truck has led, it should have no troubles with the pampered life it will lead from here on out.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Seam sealed the cowl and shot the A-pillars with weld-thru primer in preparation for the replacement drip rails today.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Does the seam sealer take paint well? I too am worried about underneath my roof and places I can't see. My drip rails are in real good shape with little to no surface rust. My truck had a ton of paint on it. Truck is looking good.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Seam sealer has no trouble being top coated with primer/paint. Actually, I plan to shoot a coat of primer on the firewall/cowl tomorrow morning. Thanks.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks! I shot the second coat of primer on the firewall and cowl this morning. It should be satin black by the end of the week.

Shot the second coat of satin black on the firewall and cowl today, then unmasked it like a big Christmas present. :)

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Thanks guys! The firewall was still wet in that picture, hence the difference in sheen.

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
How did you go about narrowing the cab supports? Did simply narrow the "rear" end and not the part that connects to the floor? Thanks.
Amazing thread btw. I'm too lazy to actually make one, but everyone on here is great at documenting and what not. [QUOTE=racecougar;5938956]Work has continued over the past few weekends, but there hasn't been much worth posting pictures of. Lots of time spent getting the panels to fit correctly. The only piece thus far that has been way off was the rear cab support. I ended up having to narrow it and rework the outer angle to match the original and fit up to the floor and rear pillar correctly. As of today, the cab supports, floor pans, door pillars, and kickpanel are in. The rocker panel has been fit, but has yet to be installed. As long as I get time next weekend, I should finish up a few plug welds on the long floor support brace, move on to finishing up the kickpanel, then hopefully get the rocker installed. After that, it's time to do the cab corner, finish up my seam welds, and get started on the driverside. Here are a few pictures from today: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1150392.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1150379.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1150391.jpg In other news, I got engaged last Friday (March 1st)! The truck now has a "running/driving" deadline of December 2014, as I'd really like it to be present at my wedding (provided that the weather cooperates on that particular day).[/ |
Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
Congrats on the engagement !!
My wife and I are the 23rd of December, it was as close to Christmas as we could get anyone to do it. :metal: |

Re: Bringing the '65 back to life
I took last weekend off to work on other projects and go to a ball game, but we were back to work on the '65 this weekend. The Raptor bed liner coating is drying on the underside of the cab as I type this.
This just felt so wrong. Scuffing up the newly painted underside in preparation for the Raptor. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190350.jpg All scuffed and ready to mask, wipe, and shoot. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190354.jpg It's difficult to really capture it with the camera, but it turned out great. We shot the underside, as well as the front fenderwell areas. I set the regulator to deliver 60 psi at the shutz gun, and it was a very simple product to lay down. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190412.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...0/P1190415.jpg |
