Re: Roof Cutting
Are you replacing the whole thing or just the skin?
|
Re: Roof Cutting
hey
im replacing the inner and outer roof and the front outer windshield panel |
Re: Roof Cutting
any foto s of the project s ?
|
Re: Roof Cutting
If it's a big back window. Cutting it at the pillars. Is probably the only thing. That will make it easier or faster.

Here's the roof pictures, i know it;s alot of work, Aint Scared, lol
like most, more time than money and not alot of either |
Re: Roof Cutting

inner roof pictures, might be able to hammer and dolly once the outer skin is off, probably use a headliner to hide the imperfections
|
Re: Roof Cutting
No advice, but please take a lot of pictures of the process and post them here - it's hard to find good pictures of the inner structures of the roof.

Re: Roof Cutting
cheque for spot weld s n drill the out w a bit ( or you can buy a spot weld drill bit )
and double cheque before you peel the roof tha you can work your way down in seeing at what else needs to be replaced take plenty or foto s of before starting the job . so you ll have a reference or seeing at how it looked before the job was started i would start w the one your keeping in seeing at how far you need to pull things apart , imo than work on the one your stripping for part s s looks like a fun project , imo just some time involved in doing it tho |

This type of drill for Spot weld works best for me.

Re: Roof Cutting
I replaced my 61 roof skin with an aftermarket one. I cut the skin off then air chiseled what was left. Cleaned it up and used panel bond and glued the new skin on. Really wasn't bad, and the panel bond should seal it off.

I Like your Style might try it that way, spent a couple hours last nite getting the old roof sealant off also Getter Done Thank You for the Link to the spot weld bits, ive ordered some |
Re: Roof Cutting
I do have some decent pictures of my 61 with the roof skin off if anyone needs anything. I had the skin off when it was blasted so I primed it and down the a pillars and anywhere else I could get before I glued the new skin on.
|
Re: Roof Cutting
hey 62C30
Pretty much what i was going to do, my inner roof needs some love when i get the outer off but sure i can get it close, going to make a headliner, should be easy as i can drill and seal some aluminum slats in the inner for support and use them for support for thin wood liner that ill cover with something ill take whatever pictures you can share , just to use as a reference when i get the outer off Thank You |

Here are some pictures. There was some rust in some of the bracing that I think they reproduce now.
|
Re: Roof Cutting
ok
got my outer roof off, as expected its a mess underneath, i have cleaned up most of the loose rust and old soundproofing mats, i still think i can save the inner roof, going to take a little time with dolly and hammer and most likely cut and weld ill upload pictures after work |

after the outer roof was off, i was able to work the inner to a decent point, im going to make a headliner so that should cover almost all of the imperfections Thanks |

I'm pretty sure it was 3m panel bond but I'll have to look. It's not cheap but it works. |
Re: Roof Cutting

It's not cheap and you lose part of it in the tip but it seems to work well

Re: Roof Cutting
The gun to use it is much higher than the Panel Bond on ebay
|
Re: Roof Cutting
I think for the tips, gun and adhesive is was around $100 but it's been a few years. I've used it on several projects and so far has been great. It would bond different types of metal together and since there is no heat like welding no chance for warping or burning paint.

Re: Roof Cutting
ok
after looking at the inner roof, i probably wont be happy with it so im looking at cutting it out, Has anyone done this, i know where the obvious spot welds are the upper door frame, across the windshield and across the back(only accessible after outer roof is out) Thanks |
Re: Roof Cutting
I replaced only the area above the windshield on the inside and out, not the whole thing. I think that panel for 64-66 is a newer part.

little progress
found a donor roof, bonus was it had a good windshield got inner roof out and set aside, not a bad job, just alot of spotweld cutting of course, mouse nest in there 62C30 Thank's for spot weld cutters link, they work alot better and faster than the other ones |
Re: Roof Cutting
On my 61 it sat in a field for 35 years when the windshield was pulled out the roof was so rusted it looked like a "waterfall" of mice turds falling out.

lol, no mice in this one when i took it apart, truck was outside, we just had a real cold weekend on Martin Luther King Day Weekend, so im guessing they relocated, did'nt smell like mice piss either
this one , the outer roof is usable except for a weird crease in the corner, the rust is surface, ill probably get a new outer roof plus the outer windshield piece is good also Thanks again i ordered another 6 of the cutters tonite |
Re: Roof Cutting

More progress got the inner roof off the good cab and got the outer roof front panel off the donor
Convertible. Lol. |
Re: Roof Cutting
Ok.
Has anyone replaced their inner roof. Where it slides into the a pillar at the front is a pain Thinking about bracing side to side and cutting the front windshield panel out Then Might be able to flex panel to fit in the pillars Any suggestions Thank you |
Re: Roof Cutting
I haven't done an inner, but am currently doing my outer skin. Have you tried installing it from inside the cab, going up.
If you haven't done it yet, prep it for paint, before you install it. Much easier now, than once it's in the vehicle. And, you have to work above your head. |
Re: Roof Cutting
I’ve tried it but I’ll try again
Just got the outer part of the inner roof cleaned up and sprayed some rust converter on it. Probably spray some color on it before I try Thank You Was in Colorado a couple years ago. Told the wife. I could stay in Frisco if we ever relocate. Lol |
Re: Roof Cutting
I would have replaced my inner roof if there was a 60-63 offered. I had to buy a 64-66 front patch to cut up to fix mine
|
Re: Roof Cutting
Ok
to anyone replacing their inner roof, a couple tips get your panel inside the cab, slide it up and in at the back first, then with a little cussing and some beverages, slide into the a pillars the A Pillars are the hard part, but it will work, lots of shifting to get it to slide into grooves and match the outer front roof panel line Good Luck The outer roof and front panel should be easier from here, probably use panel bond on the outer roof , definately weld the outer front panel and inner roof |
Re: Roof Cutting
Glad to hear you got it in !
|
Re: Roof Cutting
Thank's to all the responses
Everything helped, the spot weld cutters were a great tool i decided to not use the front outer roof panel, after cutting it out and some hammer and dolly work, there is alot of holes to fill or close bought a new piece, saved quite a bit of money buying the donor roof to make a new panel more worth it ill upload more pictures as i go |
Re: Roof Cutting
I bought a new panel for above the windshield and it was actually too narrow by 3/8" or so. I've heard other say the same thing. I cut it in half and added a strip. Great quality sheet metal parts....

Re: Roof Cutting
ok, new issue
the inner panel fits ok, but heres the issue, if i make it fit at the windshield pinch weld, which i think is the most important, it lifts up at the back I could use it this way but the seam on the inner side panel door is off slightly i can make it fit very well at the back except for the corner pockets, off slightly can anyone kinda take a look at theirs to see if they were just made this way, maybe im being too picky ill try to get pictures today, if anyone has a couple pictures of theirs ,A pillars also, that would help im figuring the weatherstripping will cover up almost all of this anyway Thank's |
Re: Roof Cutting
All I have is a 61 and 62 so the A pillars are different. Take a picture of your problem and it might help getting a response
