FNG 72 K5 CST Project
First post here, the names Ryan and I am by far no mechanic and have zero fabrication skills, just here to learn as I go, Slowly.
Back story on the Blazer... This 1972 Blazer was my Grandfather's that he bought brand new. The original paperwork is still in the glove box!:metal: Then my Dad took it over and it sat in his driveway covered and sometime in a garage for 10-15 years. My dad was never and mechanical guy and never tried to get it going again. One day it blew power steering fluid everywhere because a line was cut and got all over the belts and wouldn't start. He was late for work, so got a ride then it end up covered in our driveway for a couple years. Then moved to a garage until I told him finally I'm taking it and getting it running. As far as he knows it's the original 350 rebuilt with low miles. But not sure on the exact mileage. The gas tank has been pulled by me years ago when it had a crack and I was a dumb kid and didn't know what I was doing, I did have the piece of mind to drain it and wash it out. I drained the oil and replaced it. It was black but nothing bad coming out if there. So it begins as they say. I'm looking forward to hopefully getting some advice and help along the way from you fellers. Anyway sorry the for the long post, but here she is with the top pulled on jack stands and some other work so far: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/fb6d4a37.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/a39953b0.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/4c10f12d.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/32bd4d81.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/626a955b.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/7a091d02.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/cbd4bd97.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/f1bbc9c4.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/c49b098a.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/ae469400.jpg Got headers in there now... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...rbud12/016.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...rbud12/018.jpg New cap rotor wires Therm housing and thermostat... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ud12/006-1.jpg Got this dude for $50 http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...rbud12/001.jpg Added a +2 QT tranny pan a while back http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...rbud12/109.jpg I also replaced the whole Ignition switch and lock. Looks good Ryan and great story. Be careful with that torch, you cut through a pretty valuable 4x4 only manifold. Good luck with the project. Trevor

Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
Welcome to the forum and great blazer to start with. Awesome that it has been in the family for so long. I wish I would have kept my original K5. I traded my dad for it to keep him from selling it but ended up having to sell it a few years later for financial reasons. Keep us posted on the progress.

Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
My bad, it looked like it had been torched in the center. I wasn't trying to rude, just trying to help ya along. You will find certain things are 4x4 specific on your ride, and I would hate to see you damage them as sometimes the specific items can be sold for good profit to fund other items during the build or cannot be bought back very easily. Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
Next, I figure I really don't want AC, at all I mean. Buy I still want heat, what can and can't I pull out of it? I already have what I think is the pump out. Some of this can come out???

Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
If you don't want A/C, don't just rip it out. If it's a complete system, sell it! The whole thing! The whole setup can sell for $350 to $450. There are some folks out there that still want original. Or piece it out.... just be careful that you don't damage anything.

Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
You don't have to remove or plug anything else to make it run. It'll be fine as is, as long as the heater hoses are good and connected to the engine.
My point was that you could make a few bucks by trying to sell it instead of tossing it out. |

Hmmm I think for now I'll pull what I can off and keep it for later. |
Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
Nice starting point. But do me a favor and turn your hard top over! You will get a permanent large dent in the top of that double wall if it stays like that. I'm not trying to be a d*ck, just want you to have a nice looking top when you go to put it back on. Good luck with the build and keep posting progress pictures.

Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
Changed out all the rubber fuel lines tonight. Blew everything out and the main line still had gas in it! Now can anyone tell me what this is? An old fuel filter?
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/2e176343.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/7407e07d.jpg It was next to the battery tray. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...2/dfa3b12e.jpg |
Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
It is a charcoal canister-part of the tank/emissions system.

Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
Has anyone else installed an Edelbrock 2696 Q jet adapter? Do these double sided bolts need to be screwed in all the way? I see material starting to get pressed out.

Does anybody have any tips? This is a completely stock intake and there are a lot of little things that don't lines up and if anyone has done this feel free to chime in.

Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
I had to replace the stock throttle linkage holder with one from an auto parts store when i put an elelbrock carb and manafold on my truck.
You could specify what "little things" tho so someone could better assist you. |

Re: FNG 72 K5 CST Project
In the first pic, Under the metal housing, thats a Bi-metalic choke spring attached to the rod, you don't need it on your edelbrock as its an electric choke model carb, so you can remove it from the intake manifold althgether. When you pull it out you'll see its a thin sheet metal coil spring , its temprature sensative and expands and contracts with temoptature changes, the other end hooked to your choke linkage on the rochester.
The last pic: Yes thats the throttle cable and mount bracket, that is the bracket i had to replace with an aftermarket one, but i used an edelbrock intake manafold so i don't know for sure about your install but the spacing for and aft is probably different with the new carb. On the end of the cable you see the little nut shaft and ball, that ball is inside the end of the cable, you can pull the ball out and then attach it to the throttle linkage on the carb first, then attach the cable to it again and you can see how far the bolt hole on the bracket is from one of the manafold bolts, if it does not line up well you will have to buy an aftermarket one. |
