1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
Have reviewed and reviewed posts for which years you can use to add an original looking power steering pump set-up to a 1965 292 engine. This is a question not an answer. Is it correct to say the brackets, pulleys, pump, etc. need to be from a 1973 or older 292 engine only?
This is my take from many post such as those by "71 SWB 4X4" and others. Thank you for your patience as I know their have been many, many posts on this subject. There are reported interference issues with using PS from 1974, and newer 292 on the older engines. Les |

Heres a 1963 292 with PS and AIR . Need to check part numbers on brackets, not sure what years are the same.

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
OK, Parts book is stating 1963-1971 on the six cylinder main bracket 3877430 then 63-71 support bracket 3891598. It just states 6 cylinder, not clearly 292
67-72 292 bracket 3914992 Again not clear but heres the pages from the parts book. http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j.../72TL_1033.png http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j.../72TL_1032.png |

Here is a pre 1973 292 setup that was on ebay a while back. Pay particular attention to alternator, water pump and crankshaft pulleys used for proper belt alignment.

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
Sig, your setup is from the 67-72 vintage, not saying at all it wont work, but I can see the inner fenders etc. Great pictures and info Sig.
Im curious now about the correct or originals for 63-66. The pulley on my setup is odd the way it sticks out but I have another factory 63 292 setup with the same pulley . I have more brackets I need to get out and compare. |

It was period correct "looking", meaning it was not custom built and had the correct style pump and cast pulleys. If someone was wanting power and just to look correct I think the 67-72 type would pass... These are rare and few would have ever seen one. But no for the purist there are differences. Great thread going for those who have a 292 and want power steering, lots of good info. |

More great information, thanks. Looks like I have the crank, water pump, and alternator pulleys on my 65' 292 engine already that I need to add power assist steering.
Now I need the power steering brackets, pump and pump pulley. I am going to try and and get the original pump pulley if I can find one. Below are pics of my pulleys. Have not figured out tablet to let me post more then one image at a time. |

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
Les, check the way that alternator is mounted, I think its supposed to be a little further forward to line both grooves of the pulley in line with the crank pulley. It looks likew they added a nut or something to space the adjuster bracket.

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
These are the two main brackets for power steering on all 63-66 trucks 230 250 and 292. The difference with a 63-66 292 is the pumps pulley. These same brackets were used on all passenger car sixes also, Camaro Nova Chevelle and Impala and were in use on 230-250 trucks till 1970 according to the parts books.

Again these are not correct for 67 up 292 but are correct for 63-66 292. http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...RACKETS017.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...RACKETS019.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...RACKETS020.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...RACKETS022.jpg |

You are right they did add a nut so that PS pulley is offset, will remove tomorrow. Thanks for clearing up the information on the PS pump brackets. It is a great help! |

Parts are spacer used first on water pump shaft, next the dual belt pulley, followed by the fan spacer. This is from a 1965, "292". Will post pics of fan tomorrow.

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
60-66, thanks for the pictures of your 1966, 4x4 292 engine frame motor mounts/towers, they will help me a lot. Your 1966, 4x4 looks in great original condition. Certainly some history, that three belt water pump pulley is nice too.

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
The motor mount bracket on the frame can just be moved forward. Just remove the rivets, move it forward, and bolt it back into place. The holes are already in the frame for the forward position.

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
60-66,
With the holidays over late for us as our son had the after Christmas leave schedule this year, he got home Dec 31. I am just now getting back to 1964, K10 project. Currently looking for the part number for the 292 engine PS pulley. My master parts book does no show a number for the pulley until 1966 in group 6.655. I think the number for 1966 was "3791943 except 292"?? and "3906398 for 67 up". I am hoping you can help me out with the part number and/or number cast in the pulley. Thanks again for the greatly appreciated pictures of your 63 pulley, along with supporting information. Did you ever find out more about the uniqueness of these pullies? Thanks Les |
Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
Hi Les, great to see your back into the truck. The pulley number is 3894044 for the power steering pump and that part number was superceded by 3831291 in July of 1966 then discontinued in 1974. What is the print date of your parts book ? It will not show up in later books. Im using a 1967 dated book for this info, my later 1979 date book does not show anything.
What power steering box are you using on your K10 ? |
Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
60-66,
Thanks for the pulley part number(s), I am using a May 1981, parts book which is older then yours that does not list information also. I am always keeping my eye out for an older one. If you know, does the 63-66 PS pulley have any identifying numbers, etc. cast into it? Good question, what power steering gear am I going to use. Have not decided yet, early stages of researching. Currently looking into doing a power assist set-up??? This leads to more questions for you. Can you tell from parts book what was the first year K10s were available w/PS. Does your older parts book show any illustrations of the gear area/mounting bracket. I have gotten answers from 1966 to late 67 as to when PS first available on K10s? If I go with the "Power Assist" will likely have to fabricate a bracket to mount the gear to the frame. Memory of others believes that the gear mounting bracket was a fairly large piece on K10s w/PS. The other option recommended by most is to use a newer PS gear along with pitman arm( suggestions based on: easier, a lot less leakage, works better). Have you worked thru adding PS to 63-66 K10s. My current research is on using a C10 power assist steering set-up as my starting point. As a note do have a magazine ad for Chevy truck "Power Assist steering" published in 63 or 64. thanks, Les |

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
I have pictures of a 1984 chevy 292 power steering setup if you want some...just to see if the style of brackets are similar or different. :chevy:

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
1967 and I believe 1968 use a similar to half ton power steering setup using the same style slave cylinder and valve as a 63-66 C10. Although Ive yet to see one or drawings in a parts book. I did see a 1966 GMC K20 that had one but never saw the frame bracket, you could see how it was clamped to the center link. In my opinion I would just use a 72 and up K10 power steering box, a C10 box will not work. I have been trying to collect the 1967 K10 PS stuff as the cylinder and several other parts are different than C10. Hopefully someone will chime in here if they have seen such a unit complete for a 4X4.
