66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
Hi All, Have been lurking this great forum for a while. I'll start by introducing myself... My name is Gary and I live in Connecticut. Had a shop that specialized in drag bike chassis and go fast work... decided it was time to close down and have some fun with other things. Bought this truck a while back and drove it for a year... but the drag racing in my blood took over again. I'm going to pretty much scratch build the whole setup, any questions or advise will be greatly appreciated.
The truck was purchased tricked out old school and had this sticker on the back window... so that's what we'll call it! Think it will live up to it's new name ;) Here's some pics of the truck the way I bought it. 350 (010 block) with an M20 tranny, 2 inch drop spindles, 3" drop springs up front, 4" drop springs in the rear, disc brake conversion up front. Had some issues but all in all very cool truck and had a blast cruising with it. http://garyv.smugmug.com/1966-C10/i-...icture3-XL.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/1966-C10/i-...icture4-XL.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/1966-C10/i-...icture2-XL.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/1966-C10/i-...icture1-XL.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/1966-C10/i-...icture6-XL.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/1966-C10/i-...icture7-XL.jpg Here's some pics of where we are at this week. Will try to do my best at giving a weekly update. No time today but will post up the plan tomorrow http://garyv.smugmug.com/Build-Pictu...e3_29_2-XL.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/Build-Pictu...e4_13_3-XL.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/Build-Pictu...e4_13_4-XL.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/Build-Pictu...e4_13_5-XL.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/Build-Pictu...e4_13_2-XL.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/Build-Pictu...e4_13_6-XL.jpg |

Welcome aboard!
That's already a great looking ride so i can't wait to see what you're gona do with it. :D |
Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
Very Cool Truck. You have the exact lowering setup that I plan to run. So now I know what it will look like. Your engine looks almost spot on to what mine did.

Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
SWEET!! 1000hp
Im in for this one, are you going to make your own rear wheel tubs or use the factory style but just widen them?? I used 67-72 style tubs an widened mine like 4.75" I will be putting a 29x15x15 on the back, just got to get the right backspacing and offset for the rims to fit right |
Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
That's a gonna be one heck of a c-notched frame! LOL! :chevy:
|
Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)

Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
if I remember right the 29x15x15 will fit, just have to have the right offset and backspacing! my tubs are 16in. from the inner bedside, so there maybe an inch or so! when I cut my steel floor out it pretty much goes straight up from the frame! there's a thread in the sub section 'rocktonka' is the member, check out what he has done! it shows that that's pretty much the biggest tire you can go with without cutting the frame!

Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
Hi all, Been a while since I posted last and figured it was time for an update and some pics. Left off posting that we were going to remove the cab... done! Have spent a lot of time building a jig for this project... here's progress so far. Should start some frame cutting and welding this weekend.

Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
Hi All, Been pretty busy setting up shop, managed to make some progress. Here's some pics of the crossmember welded up and the 4 link frame tacked and squared to the jig... things should progress a little quicker now.

Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
Thank you Jeff... hope you all don't mind pics. Added some reinforcement from the frame to the crossmember, cut off and capped width. Rear end fab next .

Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
Has been a rough week... had a cold and then a stye in my eye... so didn't get a lot accomplished. Started making a jig for the 9" and should have it done by next weekend to go at it again. For those interested I will post a kind of step by step pictorial aimed at getting a braced 4 link rear fabricated properly. Some pics to start...

Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
Wow! I'm tuned in!

Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
When I decided to fab up my own 9" rear end, I went looking around on the net for some good instruction. Was kind of disappointed that no one had taken the time to document a how to. There were plenty of home made jigs for doing one thing or another. But not a start to finish... so here we go.
To recap we're using a 3.25 Strange Center Section (part no. H1112) and 3.25 X 1/4 Wall DOM Tube. The rear will also get a back brace and that is the main reason for this jig... will explain as we go along ;) We're going to have to deflect or bend the rear end axle tubes down on this jig when the back brace is welded to the tubes and housing. When the brace gets welded to the back along the length, the weld will actually pull or deflect the tubes to the rear. What we're going to do is deflect the rear before the welding process so that when the weld cools it comes back to where it needs to be.... hopefully  The Rear End Jig http://garyv.smugmug.com/9-REAR-FAB/...Step%201-L.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/9-REAR-FAB/...Step%202-L.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/9-REAR-FAB/...Step%203-L.jpg We need a good straight rear end fabrication with concentric tubes . To accomplish that 4 bushings were machined to a slip fit for the ID of the 3.25 DOM Tube and the OD of a 2" TG&P (turned ground and polished) length of shaft that runs up the center to keep everything in line. I should mention that the last parts that get welded to the rear are the housing ends... so a different bushed version of this internal alignment jig will also get used later. Finished the welding of the tubes to the center housing. Once everything cooled the shaft would turn and was easily removed! Mission accomplished! A straight concentric rear end assembly! This rear end could be used as is without the back brace but we're going to be putting some big horsepower to this heavy truck... so well add the brace. http://garyv.smugmug.com/9-REAR-FAB/...Step%205-L.jpg http://garyv.smugmug.com/9-REAR-FAB/...Step%206-L.jpg Ok enough for today I need :mm: tomorrow I will finish the bend jig and post some more pics and info. |
Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
Gary,
It is one thing to just strike an arc and lay nice welds. It is quite different to forecast the outcome & effects on what you are welding Nice job on both!! Many kudos to your skills, I guess this is what experience proves! This is how good fab-work is performed! |
Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
Impressive build.
Late but Im in. |
Re: 66 Pro Street Build (Domeringer)
Thanks for taking the time to photo document all this. I’m sure this will prove helpful to many. The whole project is well beyond my skill set, but I really admire and enjoy watching the creation of fabricating art work.
