ex-Navy 68 K10 build thread

I bought this truck several months ago but was waiting on my shop to be finished before I started working on it. The truck started out as a Navy vehicle. I am a navy veteran myself so thought that was pretty cool!

Re: ex-Navy 68 K10 build thread
Cool truck!!! I've got 18 years in myself. Currently stationed at NAS Whiting Field, but transferring to NM in Aug/Sep. Keep the pictures rolling!

Re: ex-Navy 68 K10 build thread
Very cool.

Re: ex-Navy 68 K10 build thread
Nice project..it looks to have a newer transfer case (NP205) from the looks of the t-case shifter.I dont think you can just put one of the 205 shifters on a Rockwell t case...,but even if it has the 205 instead of the original Rockwell, your better off with the 205!

Re: ex-Navy 68 K10 build thread
glad to see another one saved! Looks like a good start, good luck!
|
Re: ex-Navy 68 K10 build thread
Nice truck! I did ten years as a destroyer sailor (STGC)...and Rod's going to give me his '52 when he transfers (Rod's not aware of that yet though)
|
Re: ex-Navy 68 K10 build thread
Nice start...nice to have a shop, too.
Let's see.....battleship gray paint, body lift, suspension lift.....nah. Did it come to the Navy with the V-8? I'd like to have the El Camino I drove in 'Nam. All I have left of it is a couple of pix. SS396-350HP/TH350/Kyzer roof air/24V and aircraft radios out the wazoo. But, it was USAF blue with a white top, black wide ovals and small caps on steel wheels. |

Pretty uncommon truck, if it's an original 4x4 short step, that's for sure. Looks like you've got a good starting point, keep us updated.

Your truck looks to be an awesome truck to restore! Congrats!!! Should be a great transformation back to new. Take lots of pics. I'm sure it will be beautiful when you finish!

Re: ex-Navy 68 K10 build thread
That will be a nice ride to pull Skeeter with. That is cool that you are both retired Navy.

Guys this fella ain't foolin around; he's busy!

Re: ex-Navy 68 K10 build thread
Nice to see another 68 K-10 being saved. Check out the link in my signature and you will see mine. Looks like you already have power steering so now you just need to swap in a Dana44/corp10 with disc brakes and your set...
Where in Alabama are you? |

After the washing I rolled her back into the shop to finish the tear-down. The easy work is over, time to start bringing her back to life.

lookin good, I take it that the engine isn't original (spin-on oil filter?) and what is this part? Did someone add a some reinforcement to the frame?

I'm not sure what is up with that frame support. When I got the truck it had a big homemade wench type bumper on it. I wonder if the support was put on there for that reason. I looked over the front part of the frame and have not found any cracks. I bought some of the primer and chassis paint you recommended. I am cleaning the frame now and will apply it soon. |
Re: ex-Navy 68 K10 build thread
that primer sticks best when it's been sandblasted...
good luck |

Looking good. I appreciate all of you guys that are documenting your tear down/rebuilds. It will help me out a lot as I start to dig into my newly acquired '68 4x4. :D

Nice work on the disassembly. Truck looks real good for a project.
So how long did the shop last before you christened the floor with motor drippins? I think mine lasted about an hour  |
