Project ''Second Time Around''
First off I would like to introduce myself. I've been building custom trucks for twenty years for my own entertainment. This 93 Silverado was originally my old work truck, I drove it for four years before retiring it. Before retiring it, I used it for my project truck. Being an electrician by trade I am allowed to pick my own work truck and this was perfect with being a 2wd, 4.3. I could still haul stuff, get good gas mileage, and when it was all paid for, I would have an awesome project truck.
So far on this truck I've bagged the front, added drop spindles and a rear flip kit with helper bags. And the paint that the kids love (that was done in my garage). Unfortunately, it was put on the back burner. Here is a rendering that I did a few years ago; http://warp.scl.utah.edu/19723dr/Flame-2.jpg http://warp.scl.utah.edu/19723dr/Flame-3.jpg |

Here are some pics from 04.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
I'm waiting to see the rebuild. I think it looks good as is except for the cat eye grill.
|
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Sharp looking ride there, I can't imagine what the next level would be but I'm along for the ride !!! :metal:
|
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Pardon my french, but the artistic rendering sure looks like it has a '97 F-150 grille/lights. Don't get me wrong, the effect is smooth. I just wanted to know if I saw what I think I saw.
Didn't want to see another truck that says, "Like a rock....with a Ford block"...that I saw on the tailgate of an 88-98...several years ago. |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Chev, I think that's supposed to be a first-gen escalade conversion.
I'm with Rob -- I can't imagine what the next level is gonna be! Are you planning to lay frame? |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
yeah, I think you're right. My youngest daughter wanted a Tahoe but had to settle for an Expedition....and she had just been here. Nightmares.....

I can't believe you said the F word. I was originally going to recess 99-2000 lights and cut out the cat eye grill and fiberglass to fit. Quote:
I don't now about laying frame but it's going to be as low as possible. I'm way to old for that stuff. Or am I? |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
This weekend I tried to move it in my garage. It would turn over, but would not start. My guess is fuel pump. So next week end I'll have to drag it out. I'm going to have to take the bed off anyway.
The plan is to disassemble the front end. Recup the front bags, Make new inner fenders. Rear will be notched, linked, wheel tubs. |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Well, keep us "re-formed"...

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Yeah i like except for the grill, just never really grew on me i guess..
Cool ill look out for the rebuild. |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
OK...OK...OK... lose the grill. Gotcha. The grill will get changed to a chrome 94-98. Damn snow, It had better stop before Saturday.:chevy:
|
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
What happens on Saturday?
|
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
I have to pull it out of my side yard. The fuel pumps died! It's in 6'' of snow on gravel. With the roll pan there nothing to pull from. So I going to need to take the roll pan off, and then I can tug it out.

Just curious, But.... How long has this nice rig been sitting ? Even though I parked my conversion van a couple years ago when gas shot up over four bux a gal, I just don't think I could let my truck sit around. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ilies/nono.gif |

The truck's been sitting for about 6 months and I start it up at least every three. I only drive it in the summer, but this summer I spent driving my Suburban around and didn't have money to register the 93. |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Did you do any mods to the interior? A pics of it? That's a great looking truck.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Today was a good day/bad day. I finally pulled the truck in the garage--after a tune-up to the mustang and then a cap and rotor to my Burb.
After doing that, I had to figure out how to tug it out of the backyard. I totally forgot about the hitch on the truck. When I bought the truck it had one on it, the good part was it was in two pieces. I simply flipped it over and bolted it in. I never got around to cutting the hole in the rollpan, so I did that too. I used the front tow hooks on my 97 Z71 to tug it out. I had to put it in 4 low because of the mud. My brother and I pushed it up the driveway while my wife steered. Thanks Jeff.:metal: http://warp.scl.utah.edu/19723dr/Flame-10.jpg Here's is inside. http://warp.scl.utah.edu/19723dr/Flame-11.jpg http://warp.scl.utah.edu/19723dr/Flame-12.jpg http://warp.scl.utah.edu/19723dr/Flame-13.jpg Yes, that's the steering wheel that turns 9 different colors. |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Thanks for the inside pics. It's clean. I'm trying to come up with a plan for redoing mine. I want to keep it simple and just spice it up a little. Glad you finally got into the garage.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
You don't see those seats very often -- they're factory, aren't they?
|
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
I was curious about those seats too? Are they factory?
|
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
The seat to my knowledge is not factory, but it might have been a dealer option. I know back in the 90's there were companies selling seats like this with the matching upholstery. The PO of this truck must have been a big guy, the drivers seat is worn on the outer edge. It was that way when I bought it, three years old.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Sliding in and out before it was lowered, no doubt.
|
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
I loved watching your burb and your short bed build. Cant wait to see this as i have a 97 extended cab short bed.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
This weekend I took the front end apart as far as I could. At least I can see what I'm looking at. The driver side still needs to come off. Next week I'll work on getting the bed off to reach the fuel pump. It will be nice to be able the move it around.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
I also did some work to my 98 DD. I prefer the Chevy to the GMC. I took the old 93 chrome grill and air-dam that I saved from this project. I also smoked the signal lights wile I was at it. When it worms up I want to paint the bumper and grill black.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Not much to report this week. My father in-law has been having heart trouble and was hospitalized for a week so I spent time with him. They have no idea what caused his heart problems, but he's been released and is now recovering at home.
I did manage to get the bed cover and tailgate off. I got the bed unbolted and filler neck and wiring harness. I didn't have anyone to help me lift it off today, so I'm going to have to wait until next weekend because I'll be going out of town for work this week; anybody live in Rock Springs Wyoming? http://warp.scl.utah.edu/19723dr/Flame-19.jpg http://warp.scl.utah.edu/19723dr/Flame-20.jpg Here are some better shots of my air tank. Air brushing is really fun.:metal: http://warp.scl.utah.edu/19723dr/Flame-21.jpg http://warp.scl.utah.edu/19723dr/Flame-22.jpg |

also, i notice that you have the same problem with your passenger speaker cover (doesnt fit properly) does anyone on here have a solution to this problem? |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Keep the pics coming 19723DR, Lookin good !!!
Hope you don't mind the thread jack but I see your running wide tires on the front of your 98 DD, Would you mind sharing what size they are and the wheel width ? Also, Do you have any issues driving in the rain ? I'd like to run wides on the front of my 74 project since I got a smokin deal on four 10" Eagle Alloys. Thanks |

I will be painting the rest of the dash, I'll post lots of pics as I do it. As far as the speaker cover, there is a piece that holds the speaker cover that is sticking up. There is a tab on that piece that is supposed to go under the dash to hold the speaker piece down. I took the cover off to see what size speakers they were and didn't get the cover on tight. Quote:

Cool, Thanks for the info..... :metal:

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
I finally pulled the bed off this weekend with the help of my brother; thanks Jeff. I also changed the fuel pump out, Found that the soft line to the pump was split. Since the old pump wouldn't come on I changed it out for a new one. I also gave it a quick tune up. Runs like a champ.:metal:

I've got two more weeks in Rock springs.:smoke: |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
progress is progress. Im sure you will get alot more done when your back in town for a while. The tear down is looking good. Nice base truck to work with.
Do you happen to remember were you got the helper bag kit? Also where you running the fill up for the bags at? |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
It's been a while, but I think it was JCWitney. They are Air Lift brand. They are good for keeping the axle off the frame and towing, but they only lift 2 inches at 100psi. They are ratted for 500lds. There is a larger two compartment bag kit they sell that would haul and lift more.
My rear bags are on elec. valves hooked to a compressor and reserve tank. The kit comes with a shredder valve for each side. |
Re: Project ''Second Time Around''
Where is the love? Whether you like the grill or not, that is one nice truck. You are starting a rebuild with something that is nicer than some of the finished projects I've seen. Love it or hate it, the unique look draws attention to the truck(which is why most of us do this in the first place).Who wants a truck that looks like everyone else's? BTW,Great flames, are you self taught or did you go somewhere to learn? Good luck on your build!:metal:

Thank you, I was shocked at the negative comments I received after starting this thread. I know how hard it is to break the norm and do something different. Good or bad it sends us in a direction of process that we go through and nobody does it right the first time. A lot of these things are just trial and error. I realize to make the majority of people happy, I would have to put the stock grill on. It's easy to stick a stock grill from the factory on and have a truck that looks like everyone elses. As far as the flames go, in school I studied commercial art and I've always been good at drawing, many of the ideas came from magazines. I've been painting cars since 94 in my garage, I've always done it as a hobby. The purple came from a truck I'd pained years ago but was wrecked. Although I do realize purple has gone out of style, the question now is to repaint the truck with a newer scheme. I welcome yours, and others, opinion. |
