Coke for rust removal
My front bumper was covered in light rust so I poured a can of coke on it and wadded up a handfull of aluminum foil and scrubbed away.
I couldn't believe how fast it came off! I will be trying this on my mag wheels next. I don't think I would try this on a show truck as the foil might have scratched the chrome a bit, but for my rig it was perfect. |
Re: Coke for rust removal
I've heard of using soda on your battery terminals to get rid of acid build up, but never for rust. Glad to hear it work for you!

Re: Coke for rust removal
Ive actually seen Coke tested on chrome and it had favorable results. I think the show was Myth Busters.

That's why you're supposed to drink Coke after drinking water. The water creates the rust and the Coke removes it. :b69: |
Re: Coke for rust removal
Cleaned my battery terminals with it and it worked great. Just remember to spray off your driveway, mine is permanently stained....or eroded

Re: Coke for rust removal
I remember the episode of Mythbusters where they tested this. The bumper they did looked great. But when they cleaned battery terminals, it seemed as though that the fact that it is a liquid was the only thing that helped. Water did just as good of a job. At least, that is what I remember. Haven't seen the episode in a while, and I have proper supplies for cleaning batteries lol.

Hey guys I was just passing through reading the posts and thought this old thread might interest you .

Re: Coke for rust removal
I've found that the best cleaner for battery terminals is WD-40 then Light sanding and a repeat of WD to remove the dust.

Re: Coke for rust removal
A pencil works good on removing light surface rust. When I was in the Army, back in the eighties, my section chief showed us that trick for getting surface rust off our M16s.

Re: Coke for rust removal
Going to bump this one....
I picked up some old OE bbc chrome v.covers for cheap that are in decent enough shape w/a LOT of grime, dirt build-up, & surface rust. I tried spraying them down w/some degreaser & scrubbing w/0000 steel wool. That took most of the 'easy' stuff off but not the hard/stubborn stuff. I tried more steel wool w/some WD40 but there wasn't much difference. Any suggestions on something I can possibly soak these in to loosen the stubborn stuff w/o destroying the present chrome finish (trying to salvage if @ all possible)? The one I've scrubbed on so far does look better; just still has a long way to go. I'm just trying to work smarter.... not harder. |

I've used tin foil to shine up rusty chrome but never with coke. Might be fun to try. |
Re: Coke for rust removal
Ok, I'll try the vinegar approach. How long of a soak do you guys think (mins, hours, days)?

Re: Coke for rust removal
would like to know this too..i plan on soaking my bolts in this stuff.

Re: Coke for rust removal
Coke will take the oily film off your windshield too. You know when it's raining and that crap that smears all over as the wipers go by (?) I guess it's oil .. just road grime in general.

Re: Coke for rust removal
I tried the Coke and foil on my rusty chrome wheels. I was surprised how quickly it removed the rust, and it left the chrome looking good. I think I scratched one area where I was rubbing too hard, but it looks far better than the rust did!
By the way, the chrome polish barely made a dent in the rust. But the Coke took it off right away. I think it was actually diet cherry Pepsi. I bought a new 2 liter bottle of real Coke just for this purpose, but I haven't even opened it yet...:metal: |
Re: Coke for rust removal
Using coke for rust removal is nothing new, my Dad was using this on the old split rim truck wheels, back in the 1940's and 50's!!! Dad always worked in big truck shops, they used lots of coke back then. Hope people enjoy drinking this stuff!!!!
