exhaust exit?what you guys run?
 

putting my new dynomax ceramic headers on next week along w/my much anticipated delta-flow 40 series flowmasters. can't decide how i want to do the exit,out the sides;so i can hear it OR straight out the back w/ an angle cut tip.what you guys think? got any pics, or any ideas about it?

I prefer out the sides - it sounds better. Even on my truck (Ram horn manifolds, 2 into 1, 2 1/2" pipe) it sounds nice and throaty coming out the side. I think you lose too much going out the back, and it looks sorta funky, too.

I've been contemplating a smokestack set-up lately.. dual pipes coming up behind the cab in a semi-truck fashion. I think it'd be cool.. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/wink.gif

Mine come out behind the rear wheels at 45 degree angle with 3 1/2 inch chrome tips.

As far as coming out the side; before or after the rear wheels? I'm getting ready to install the vette ramhorns myself with 2.5" pipe through chambered mufflers. I'm thinking exit in front of the rear wheels at a slight angle.

Just got my flowmasters put on a few months ago, I have them dumpin straight down, just before the rear axle outta 3" tips, sounds great!

I plan to turn mine out the sides,ahead of the wheels. I just have turn downs for temporary,sounds good,but more resonance inside the truck....69 longhorn.

I Just got mine Install about 2 weeks ago. I have the same set-up as you except I went
with the Afterburners mufflers by Flowtech
My pipes come out the side but are turned
down like the Chevell with the chevell
tips. I am going back the get the H-pipe
this week(More power I am told) Oh an the sound Is the same as the Flowmasters but
about 60 dollars cheaper for the set of
mufflers. If you go with flowmaster go with
the Deltaflow 40's

Mine exits the sides just ahead of the wheels. Had it that way 2 years so far, and have decided I don't care for it.

The sound is "lop sided" (you hear 4 cylinders louder than the other side's 4). Probably curable with an H-Pipe. On long drives the exhaust drone is tiresome, you have to yell to talk, and can hardly hear the radio. Next time I am going with an H-Pipe and behinde the rear wheel side exit.

An H pipe will mellow the exhaust,& even the pulses. It made a big difference in noise level with my 40s flows....it will also pick up the power in the low & mid range.....69

I have an H pipe and they turn down after the axle and do not show at all. I like the clean look and sound. Just my 2c

I have behind the 402 cheapy Dynomax Headers($80 ones,never had a problem no gasket leaks 4-years know)and aluminized 2 1/2" ehaust hooked to Dynomax muffler exiting in the stock rear of the wheel location.the only place it should be in my opinion.I absolutley hate seeing exh dump infront of the wheels and i hate it even more straight out the back on a truck.just a personal preference though.probably cheaper infront of wheels but probably more noisier,and as far of the side stacks there a mexican lowrider 67 down here with the semi stacks it doesnt look good,i laugh everytime i see it.but thats just me,or maybe its the mural on the hood,visor,bug cather or the 13" reversed wire wheels,or the crushed velvet interior and dingoballs?????Such a shame its a 72 Cheyenne Super SWB with a factory 402 has buckets,tilt,tach-it needs to be taken back to a truck not a g-ride,oh even has a chain steering wheel,and a beer handl shift knob-pretty cool huh,thought not!!!

I've got stock ramhorns with stainless pipes and glasspacks comming out the side just behind the rear wheels and it sounds pretty tough.

I like out the side at an angle, behind the rear wheels. With a topper on and pipes straight out the back, you will pull exhaust gases in to the topper around the tailgate and hatch. Really bad if you have the side windows or top vent open on the topper.

You may never plan to put a topper on your truck but I had one on mine once and found this out.

I can't remember who on this board has this, but it's what I'm considering. I want 2.5" pipes with 40 Flows straight out the back. But, I may want it to be more aggressive. This guy has exhaust dumps before the rear wheels. I've never heard this before, but it sounds like a cool idea. I may want loud and obnoxious, or I can mellow it out a little like when I'm going to church.

Hey Patrick, that's exactly what I am doing with my 72!! I thought of doing the stacks idea a couple years ago. I was gonna run it off my inline, but I will be dropping a rebuilt 350 into the beast in 1 month or so. So far I am planning on keeping the stock manifolds, running 2, 12" long bottles wit 2 " pipes, then 90 degrees up, and run up the back of the cab. I think it will accent the flatbed nicely. The only thing that would be even cooler is adding a flame thrower kit to the stacks, Talk about mean looking!!!!! Hmmmmmmm Fire is your friend!! I just may have to try that out hmmmmm

IMO,I agree with Andy. The Lil Red Express trucks can pull it off, not so sure about anything other trucks

I helped put a set of stacks on a flatbed,& thought it looked decent(set inside the bed a little),the holes were cut through the floor. This was a Ford,with 351 W......had an awsome Sound!!!!!!!!.......69 longhorn.

Well, I have old corvette heads on the truck, which run to rusty pipes, which leads to a rusty muffler that has a gapping hole in it, and last but not least, the tip sticks it's nose out behind the rear wheel. I'll tell you one thing, it's does anything, BUT muffle the exhaust!!! For all intents and purposes, I should hack the muffler off, and just run a straight pipe! The neighbors hate me when I come ripping into the driveway, off work, at 6:00am!!! In a quiet neighborhood, my truck kinda sticks out!! Well, at least there's one other dude that lives across the street, that has an mid - late 80's Chev pickup, that's almost as noisy as mine. I think he waits for me to go to sleep, and get's out in that truck to rev it up some, just for good measure! A war he wants, a war he gets!! hahaha

I'll drive my truck right into his backyard, flatten his fence in the process, and rev the arsehole outta the truck, right next to his windows!!

reminds me i haved pissed off the neighbor my brother came over early to assisst in a motor swap,only thing left was hook exhaust to headers he begged me to start it.I said get in lets go for a test ride.Open headers on that Big Block is loud we when for a quick around the blocker,alot of me romping on it,my neighbor was in my driveway in his underwear and said wtf are you doing?,i said driving my truck,this dudes aboutr 6'8 and big boned and hes pissed i screech out "im sorry"he yells i just worked graveyard last night,i said i wont do it again,you can go back to bed now.Been careful every since.open header Sunday morning at 8 am no good idea.

I'm a firm believer in doing an open header/no hood test drive after an engine swap.

2.5 pipes out the rear with 3.5 x 22 inch tips with exhaust pipes running thriugh the tips stopping 4 inches shy of the end of tips giving good looks without ruining flowmaster music

pontiac 455, purple hornie glass packs, 3" alluminized pipe out the sides before the rear wheels, they will hear ya for miles! I love it! You dont need a radio when you have asweet sounding v8!

AHHH bolt some glassbacks straight to the headers its all you really need,oh might aswell take out your stereo,and put in a delete plate.

I am a open header believer to,just wont do so early next time,ive been pulled over before withem in my 440,now thats a hot sounding open headered motor,had a 280 Comp Cam,headers,Holley,it was LOUD,decided to run to store.end of my street around corner 2 motorcycle cops,and i was romping on it all the way down the street,but tried to idle by them,pointed at me pull it over.Dude was cool,lifted the hood,bs for a moment,managed to slip in man i am broke now,put all my money in it(hoping to get sympathy)got no ticket,just a take it home now,and a lightem up.NO problem sir!!!he was cool!!! had was talking about some race car he has and had to do some open headered test runs to sometimes to see if it was faster.

I have headers, 2.5" pipe, and 40 seires Flowmasters that just end above and ahead of the rear axle. No turndowns or anything. It sounds really deep, and throaty. But, it is also pretty damn loud, which i like (im 17) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/smile.gif. I like the looks of pipes straight out the back myself, but they sound better inside the cab if you run them out the sides.

My Daily-Driver: '72 Chevy LWB Custom/10. Rebuilt 350, 300 HP thanks to a few go-fast goodies. Ochre with a white top. Future plans include TBI fuel injection, a 700R4 tranny, and possibly some 3.73 rear gears.

im putting a trailer hitch on my pickup and my pipes coming out hte back are in the way. i dont want to be able to see them either. if i cut them off as they turn down after the axle will that burn the wood? anybody done this? thanks, Ben
