the 71 "break up" build
 
i have a 1971 chevy 4x4 long bed 4"lift on 35" tires it decent shape. i paid 1300 for it and drove it home 45 min away. i have used it for a daily driver for a few months and my girlfriend just dumped me so all my time and money goes into finishing my truck :) (not a bad thing) i have done this kind of work before but if anyone has any hints or suggestions feel free to say i am just getting into these trucks and dont know much about them.

all i have done to it is install a radio and put the stock one back in the dash.

i bought a parts truck and just pulled the cab it is rust free and going on my truck. my question is it is a 1968 stick shift cab going on a 1971 auto truck. what all is intailed to get it ready for my truck?

The difference between stick and auto is:
Shifter in the column: swap columns, keep neutral/reverse light switch
Extra pedal: Remove clutch pedal
Extra hole for clutch: cover hole
I don't know if the wiring harness is different because of neutral switch, but you can always swap internal wiring harnesses.

Also, since number plate is part of the cab, you will have to re-title to the new cab. Be careful if your state requires that the frame VIN needs to match the cab VIN.

The only real difference in the cabs is in the hand vs foot operated parking brake.Everything concerning the transmission is interchangeable

If your donor cab isn't off a 4x4 you'll need to change the trans tunnel (high hump on 4x4)

Congrats on the additions! Would you mind telling this rust belt dude what a "parts truck" runs for in your area? It looks like it would be worth swapping as many parts back on to the parts rig for a beater... In my Michigan eyes that is...;)

looks like some great parts. the 68 looks as nice or nicer than you 71 4x4. why aren't you fixing it?

i ran into that same question alot and had it two months before i decided to touch it. my issue was my truck had the lift and tires already and everything worked. my truck was an auto and i prefer that for towing. the 68 sat for years and had drum brakes

i got the privlage of working on my friends 70 chevy today just got the 350 running and put the bed on the frame so now he has to help me get my cab ready to paint :). thought i would put pictures up of it

i pulled the 62 corvette 327 out of my parts truck and got it all ready now. i replaced oil pan gasket intake gasket and switched to a hei distributor.

msd cap and rotor
axcel shorty spark plugs
morosmo carb spacer
k&n air filter (knock off)
and just clened the rest up

i have been getting my replacement cab ready and its coming along well. its almost all rust free with rust free rockers and floor boards.

could i get imput good or bad about my build? i have redone alot of classic cars but never a truck like this so i just want to be sure im not missing anything or if there are tricks to any of this.

i just finished up cleaning and patching the pin holes i found around the blower motor and a few on the floor boards. i stripped them all to bare metal cleaned them and patched them then used all-metal as filler on the floor boards and a little bondo around the blower motor

if you rebuild it back to exact factory stock specifications, then it is worth more to people who are looking for that particular type of truck. If you're not going back to a stock appearance, and are going to do some mods and add your own personal touches, its irrelevant.

It seems to me that part of the motivation with these trucks is making it your own - you're restoring it to make it nice - you do the mods to make it your own.

where do i bolt the negative battery cable to? it used to be bolted to my intake but it looked tacky

I believe they were bolted to the head in an accessory hole from the factory. If you want to hide it a little I would think one of the motor mount to block bolts would work.

As posted the neg lead goes to the front of the head, i also beleve on my truck there is a smaller lead running from the neg lead at the battery to the fender.

If you run the neg batt lead to the engine mount do so to the engine side of the mount. And there should also be at least 1 if not 2 ground straps that connect from the rear valve cover bolt to the firewall.

got it running two days ago and had to chase an intake leak down to the carb base gasket now my truck hauls i found out i have high compression pistons and its pushing about 400 hp :)

Yep, i am still enjoying this thread myself.

Back when i bought my truck i went to a national Truck Parts store, i asked the guy about a warn wench bumper, it was in the 90's and warn had stopped production on them, the store parts guy called and there was only 1 left in stock and it was i beleve $150, well i was thinking about how and where i was gonna carry my spare tire if i lost the front bumper tire carrier, so i ended up passing on it and have been kicking myself in the butt every since!

thats pretty funny my only issue with the bumper is now i need to buy a winch to fill the spot :) but it makes it so nice for standing on while working on my engine

i like to get a little crazy while driving in my truck and want to put shoulder seat belts in i see the bolt holes in the cab already. any suggestions of what belts will work best in my truck?

I have heard that S-10 belts work, i just bought a brand new set of belts thru classic heartbeat a year or so ago, almost all the vendors that sell parts can get sholder belts. The only complaints i have with mine is i would like to have a plastic tube/sleeve holding the inner belt so it can be a 1 handed operation to buckle, the other is ya have to pull real slow or it latches on ya, but then again so does my dakota..

i redid alot of my wiring and cleaned it all up but i found three wires im not sure where they go? my truck factory had saddle tanks factory so not sure if they are for those
