Road experiences with imports.

Yesterday i was at a light. 2 lane both ways. Im behind the 1st car and in the other lane i observe a Honda (early 90's like a fierro) with a big corn can on the back first in the other lane. Im ideling and i hear him rev it up over and over. Smoke going everywhere. I couldnt help my self, Neutral, and a few blips. He looks back and drives off slowly. I got soo pi$$ed off at him for even thinking about it. If im ideling and you feel intimidated what makes you think you stand a chance? He must have had a whole 125hp but the huge muffler added what? 400 more hp? I didnt race but just wanted to rant.

try pulling up next to one of them going thump thump thump ....first thing I do is slap in some Ozzy and turn it up till I can't hear it any more......then when they look over I tag the down buttons and drop to the asphalt......tic toc and the light goes green then I wake up the Caddy engine and leave them in a cloud of tire smoke and let off as soon as I get out of the intersection and let them stair at the 18" wide Pro Streets ussually they wont pass me after that no matter how slow I go!...I love handing out Old School Lessons!!!!!!!!:metal:...ummm lets see 8.2 liters VS 2.2 maybe?? yea thats fair...lmao

...until you get surprised by one. Last fall I was cruising with a buddy in his single turbo blow thru Mustang that made 410/460 rwhp/tq and he teased an EF Civic hatch. We all hit the highway and the Civic pulled us. We were a little shocked...

Re: Road experiences with imports.

thats why you can only give them 50 feet 400lbs of torque beats any turbo or blowen 4 banger for that far and when you let off they will neverknow how far you'd take it....lol

Re: Road experiences with imports.

notch1988 - imports ONLY like to race from a roll (especially the little turbos that don't start making power until 5k+). Start from a dig and good luck finding one that can hold.

The only "tuner" car that has snuck up me would be the SRT4. I used to own one, and can tell you there are WAY too many guys with 400-500+ on that little thing. I say "tuner" instead of "import" since lets face it; there are plenty of folks around with a mazda/supra/etc with lsx or big v8's.

Re: Road experiences with imports.

For every fast one there are a million turds with a fart can, a wing and a poorly installed body kit flopping in the wind.

A buddy of mine built a RWD 240 Nissan with a turbo 4 cylinder and to be honest I think it's really cool. It made 300 at the wheels and it will move.

Maybe there is something wrong with me but a nice sounding V8 is like soothing music, a fart can on a 4-holer gives me a headache. I came home from overseas and jumped straight into my Corvette. I didn't even turn the radio on for 2 weeks, they just sound that good to me.

BR3W CITY 10-29-2010 03:52 PM

Re: Road experiences with imports.

no 4cyl has good harmonics, most v6's don't have any special sounds (although a big turbo GN sounds great on that little 3.8)

The old inline 6/8/12's had some pretty sounds.

Re: Road experiences with imports.

I've had some experience with import trucks.......... titans and tundras....

the old body tundras (with the 4.7's ) are really slow, but I knew a guy with a 2wd Titan, with exhaust, a bully dog programmer, and a built transmission that would beat my 383 powered truck from a roll (it ran 14.2 at the dragstrip with traction problems)......but my truck would get him from a dig......never had a good chance against a new body tundra........most of their owners are rich kids who like to try to race in traffic.....which I won't do....

Re: Road experiences with imports.

everyone person in my school has no idea about the real power you cant get out of an sbc. they automatically think mine wont go fast because its a truck, everyone either has a fartcanned honda or vw, its rediculous. ive tried to explain that its not just the engine that makes it go fast, its a combination between the engine, tranny, gears, stall, tires, all that. they just dont understand.... i cant wait till the first time i can hold that linelock and tach it up and smash it through the gears and ride it out for a lil with those open headers screamin down the school lot.

and yes for those who dont know im still in school.

I havent seen many imports on the street that can roll at 30mph+ and lay two foot wide black marks for 100yards before they lay off. Granted not all here can either but just saying.

Most are slow but a few will suprise you.. By me imports are pretty big. I know of 3 different 10 second "street car" imports in my area. They are track verified 10 second cars, but, I use the term "street car" loosely. The 3 of them are pretty close friends with each other and all help each other with their combos ect. All 3 of these cars if pulled over would be forced to go straight to the state ref with out a get out of jail free card. They rarely are on the street.

I also know of 1 import that is DOT legal (went to the state ref), smogs every 2 years (by just swaping out the headers and exhaust) and it's been 9.90 on the bottle and is a consistant mid/high 10 second car on motor. But this is also a 3rd gen FC Rx7 with LS1 swap in it. Car weighs 2,850 with my buddy Aram in it and goes pretty darned good.

Re: Road experiences with imports.

Think I have the ultimate ricer-racer wanna-be story. Was hauling the truck home on an open trailer after the Truckin Nationals last year. At a stop light a (???) import with a big stupid aluminum wing and fart can exhaust was revving the crap out of this little 4banger wanting to race..... yeah,, race the tow vehicle pulling the truck on a trailer. I don't think I've laughed so hard this decade! Should have told him, "let me unhook the trailer and we'll go for it" . The little vortec TBI 383 in my 94 probably would have ate him alive.

Re: Road experiences with imports.

Man....you guys gotta be careful. Those things will eat you alive. Sure, I might mess with one that has the "fixed" rear airplane wing on the truck but NEVER the one with the adjustable one. They can really set those up for major downforce!!!!!!

Actually "super73" is right. Most can't even get out of their own way but there is a small handful that will flat embarrass you. It's usually the turbo'd or NOS ones. I've watched a couple "pass time" shows and couldn't believe my eyes. Not like high school back in '86.

Re: Road experiences with imports.

The fast ones do still have the problem of hooking them, at the track or on the street. At least they have a full slick most the time at the track, but when they are rolling around on the street, most of them don't work until at least 50-60mph, unless they are one of the slow ones..

Some are nasty. As on pass time, they never win off the line. Like Super said, 50+ is when they kick in.

Re: Road experiences with imports.

like mentioned earlier. MAYBE 1 out of 100 run decent. the turbo/nitrous hondas need a fair amount to run 13's much less 12's. the higher end stuff like subies or mitsu's do it with minor mods but cost alot to start. the srt4's seem to be the most common that run hard. i like puttin on my bibs and walking around the stagin lanes talkin to em. eventually somebody will wanna show my old roadmaster wagon how fast they are

Re: Road experiences with imports.

Alright, I got one from over a year ago.....

There's a punk kid running around up town with a custom painted fart canned import, I had just left my club's Friday cruise-in with my 97.

I had got caught by the last light in town and up comes this kid next to me (4 lane divided highway), He blips his fart can a couple times so I look over. He looks at me and points ahead, I look down the side of his car then look back at him over my glasses, I pointed at him then pointed to myself then pointed ahead and he shakes his head yeah.

I busted out laughing my azz off, The look on his face was priceless !!!

When the light changed I took off as normal and he just sat there, To this day he won't get with-in four car lengths of my truck....

.....and most of them "kick in" because of something called "BOOOOOOOOST".

I'm sure we would all agree though that there is nothing more retarded than big ole meaty slicks..................on da frunt!!!

Re: Road experiences with imports.

Look, I'm not going to take anything away from the guys that are actually putting it down. I respect anything fast. Will I go out and build one? Probably not. But even my local dirt oval has a 4 banger class now. Why do you think that is? Because the older camaro driving stock class is thining out. Sanctions see the issue and want to keep it alive, so they make new classes.

I can go on about how many slow domestics are out there with their RV cammed motors too. Both sides have their slow cars and there fast ones. For Gods sake, look at us, we are racing trucks :)

hahaha this is true and as for the hook up thing and them all kicking in at 50 because of boost ya thats true but the subies and evos are 4wd and they hook hard if set up right... like all ricers most of them are yes made to sound like a 2 stroke dirtbike ( high pitch and annoying when revved excessively ) but those few that are done right hall ass. sadly i still havent come across one of those good ones haha

I'm glad there are people in this community like you; I see way too much import hating going on, just like I see domestic hate going on in the import community. It really is a sad thing.

Personally, I own both a modified Honda and my 87' Silverado, and I love them both, but for very different reasons. The Honda is light and tossable, and the Silverado will be the "big power" vehicle.

I'm currently in the middle of a build on my Honda. When I'm done, the 2.2L *naturally aspirated* 4 cylinder will be putting out around 250 crank horsepower. Even at it's current power levels, it's a lot of fun. It actually makes more torque than horsepower right now, so it's a lot of fun off the line. It won't be the fastest thing on the street with the new engine, but it will be a blast to drive.

I don't care if it's a Honda, or a Chevy. If you built it and you enjoy, what more can you ask for? I just think it's silly to bash on someone for their choice of vehicle to mod.

Just for kicks and giggles, here's my stock Honda dyno chart to laugh at. Don't worry about hurting my feelings, I laugh at it too! Hopefully when my truck is finished, everything on this chart will be a multiple of 3 or 4 (except RPMs)!

Re: Road experiences with imports.

the thing i've always laughed at is that honda makes more hp out of their bikes than cars  . imports todays are the five-ohs of the 90's. they get a bad wrap simply cause every 12 year old lookin fukker on the planet has one it seems. i have a buddy with a decent modded civic on juice that runs low 13's (maybe even high 12s). it is a real streetcar so he gets some purdy good looks at the track since most fast hondas are gutted. he won't even associate with the ricer kids at the track

You can call me a HATER. Dont bother me. Most people that i have seen calling others haters usually don't have crap themselves. Have you ever seen a hard worker with their life in order (possibly millionaire) call someone else a hater? Other then rappers i have not seen one. One done right i respect, but the ones i see every day, i dislike.

I dislike imports because every other person in one puts a muffler on it and thinks they have a race car. And all the race stickers and body graphics add 200hp right?

I didn't specifically call anyone a hater, I just said there is a lot of import hating going on; I see it in the import community too, they hate on domestics all the time. You are always going to have people doing tacky modifications, regardless of being an import or domestic; is it really fair to single out imports? I know plenty of people that threw a muffler on their domestic car/truck and thought they were hot stuff out on the streets. Take the kid down the street from me, for example. He's got a lowered, fart canned, ricer tail light and sticker fest Cavalier, and he revs at everything.

It's very much a two way street.

You know after thinking about it, really isnt imports. I really lump all the guys in Cavaliers, Neon, honda, anything like those into one group. I know what your saying though.

Had one pull up and start revving at me while driving my wife's bone stock Nissan Xterra one night. I spanked him through first gear, then let off. The Xterra will pull 1st gear pretty hard, but fall on it's face in second. The kid just turned off, embarrassed I guess. I got a good chuckle out of it, even though my wife thought I was being a bit childish for even doing it in the first place. Especially in her grocery getter.

Oh yeah, no bigger annoyance than a glasspack with a huge chrome megaphone funnel mounted on the end of the tail pipe! You know, the one that pops for 20-30 seconds every time they decelerate. I rate that right there with any of the fart can/wonton piped cars.
