1970 Longbed Build

5 Attachment(s)
I originally bought this truck at the beginning of 2009 and sold it to my Dad about a year later after putting a different bed on it, tires and wheels, and exhaust.

My Dad converted the front to discs and put dropped spindles on it.

I just recently bought the truck back from him and will be doing a leaf to coilover conversion with some help from Porterbuilt.

I don't have the best pictures of this truck from the last few years, but that will be changing.

I'm probably going to be selling the Nissan Armada/ Titan wheels and tires, but won't be able to ship.

Looks like a great truck.

Save all the leaf spring parts, they are getting harder to find and us rust belt guys sometimes need those frame brackets and such.

A lot of you are probably asking yourselves, why would this guy take the time, energy, and money to rebuild a longbed? Great question. Since I'm doing a lot of motorcycle riding, I need as much room as I can get out of a bed for dirt bikes and gear, and possibly a street bike for track days. Bed has to be fully functioning.

I picked up a '07 Suzuki vtwin a couple of weeks ago and am in the process of converting this to a streetfighter/ modern cafe racer and replacing the clutch. So between the bike, playing in the dirt, and work, progress on this truck has been slow.

The Porterbuilt kit should be ready to ship by the end of next week. 12 bolt housing goes to the powder coater next Monday, and CPP rear disc conversion should be here next week. Eaton posi and Moser 5 lug axles showed up today. A couple of patch panels need to be completed on the bed and it's off to the strippers.

The theme on this truck is a vintage Chevelle influenced truck with a static drop. The rear American Racing VN500/ AR500 15x8's showed up yesterday. I had a '90 silverado bench seat reupholstered to look like a '70 Chevelle with a similar pattern in vinyl.

More to come next week.

Little by little.

There should be some Porterbuilt boxes here by Friday.

Excitement plus a lot of anxiety.

People just dont get it sometimes. THey just follow the crowd. I use to have a shortbed truck but I would get excited driving down the street passing a longbed truck. Now the shorty is gone and I have a Longbed. Funny how things work out. I just love CHEVY/GMC TRUCKS. GOOD JOB on sticking with it.

Thanks bud, I appreciate it.

I'm selling a pair of 15x8 American Racing wheels now because I feel like she deserves 20's with the PB stuff underneath.

More to come soon.

Right on with the long bed. I think they can look as cool or cooler than the short beds, but you just have to nail the stance and wheel/tire combo. The short beds are a lot more flexible toward having different looks, in my opinion...

sighlurr 04-06-2012 12:09 AM

Re: 1970 Longbed Build

Fully agree. I don't have a lot of flexibility with the stance, so I'm all over the map with rims. Just ordered my 3rd pair of wheels in 10 days. I'll get it....

Non-project update: Got some work done on my left arm Friday night in SF. A 3 hour session with 4-5 more hours to go for the black and grey shading. I wanted the focal point to be a tribute to my Mom, who was born in 1947.

Today I spent some more time on the frame with my trusty copper spoon, filling in a few holes.

Holes filled and most of the rear set in primer.

Expecting rear wheels and a whole bunch of PB boxes next week.

Bronze hammer finish paint. Laid out more like a charcoal grey color. Should be a good contrast with Nate's kit in satin black, gloss black 12 bolt housing, red coils with CPP rear brake calipers.

I left the little crossmember at the back in on purpose, trying to prevent the frame from spreading. But apparently that didn't work, because it still took some ratcheting to get it just right for the rear xmember.

With the xmember lined up with the mounting holes on both frame rails, the carrier mounts are about 4.25" too far back.

After two different unsuccessful PB xmember installs, I opted for the CPP one that doesn't require an altered driveshaft.

Work's been busy, but I'm still pluggin' away on this thing.

Frame notch holes have been cut out, and the first halves of the notch were bolted up and welded in. Rear cross support bar has been bolted in too.
