Found the old pics of when we brought home the 69, 35 mm and their looking a little rough, just scanned them. Been 5 or 6 years now, truck was in Santa Rosa Calif, don't think the truck ever got more than 100 miles from where it was made. Went over Donner and down through Napa Valley to pick it up, decided there was to much snow to get back over Donner, went down around the other way. Pulled up the grapevine over Tehachapi Pass through Needles and home through Moab. The pics were taken at the rest stop in Mojave desert.

Some closer pics would be nice. Evidently those old trucks aint as heavy as I thought they were. Good looking from what I can see.


Dumd ?. Is Donner snowy all the time. I thought just winter. I'm on a expeditor website and a few of the guys there talk about Donner some. Just wondering

She weighs 10900 and that trip was in jan, big storm behind us and the pot holes just tore us apart, going over Tehachapi was much nicer, dropped the trailer in Needles and went to Quartsite for the day, shirt sleeve weather in Quartzite, it was wonderful. Its a 1969 model 288, first series to aluminum tilt hood, 335 cummins RTO 913 trans R 170 axle with a jake, it pulled a set of doubles in and out gravel pit and hauled asphalt on road jobs.

I even got the maintence records, she's got 970000 miles with 20000 on new 335

It's got that traditional look yet. Love it! Now a days you rarely see a Pete w/o all the stainless and aluminum. 20k on a re-power? Man,that truck is prime.
Your Dodge is made to haul,but I bet it smiled when you decided to run I-40.

I went to slip a set of aluminum wheels on the front to see what it would look like and discovered the studs are to short, I decided it looked a lot better with the original steel wheels. The aluminum wheels can stay on the 79 truck. I-40 was the way to go, when we came over Donner empty the pot holes were so deep I thought it was going to knock the axles out from under the trailer and to many to dodge them, even having to pull grape vine it was alot better than Donner, and besides we had never been to Quartzite before and we really needed some sunshine. As far as the old dodge its starting to show its age. 340000 miles, the 12 valve cummins has never been opened up,gone through a 5 speed trans, a tranfercase and always have lots of trouble with front wheel bearings and steering parts. The only thing I really like about it is the engine but its still done well for what it is, and we have made at least 6 trips to the midwest and came back grossing 28 to 30000. If it wasn't for the exhaust brake I would never try and haul that much weight and its a real brake saver, just put the secound set of brakes on it since we've owned it. More pics of Pete tonight.

The original aluminum riveted tilt hood and fenders needs alot of work, I was able to find a fiberglass narrow nose hood which is fairly rair, I'm running it until I repair the other hood.

I agree, I'm a 2-Axel fan myself. Road Tractors as well as Dump Trucks, Wreckers and Tankers. To me the coolest thing is a Heavy 2-Axel with Air Brakes.

Around here 2 axle tractors don't exist except for the freight companys and pop distributers, if you ever spend much time in palm springs you see them alot in agriculture, also we like to camp next to the freeway in Quartzite so I can try and get pics, you see some real interesting trucks.

Being from central ca two axles are what I grew up around, got my license in.
I have an opportunity to get a low mileage 73 coe Freightliner small cam and a 13.


South side of 10 in quartzsite is a dump truck with appears to be a 12v71 monster of a truck.

The singles seem to be popular now for collectors cuz they fit in more garages easier. Man,Peanut Butter,you have great trailers. Lots of guys have great old trucks but no trailers to match up. I'd like to find an old low-boy for when I get an old Jimmy.

The old green tanker I bought from the forest service in Jackson Hole Wyoming last year, looked long and hard to find this one, they are about all gone. If you look close you can still see the forest service logos. Its a Butler tank, still got all the glass side marker lights on it, if you look at the passenger side its got a recess for a spare tire, never seen that before. The funny thing is it appears to be converted to haul fish, they plumbed the bottom of the tanks with 4 inch PVC and built a bracket where the spare tire would go to hold a large oxegen bottle.

You no, sometimes I think about not aquiring anymore trucks and just work with what I've got, and then another one pops up and I can't help my self. To many times its headed to the crusher and it breaks my heart, keeps me broke all the time. I think its better to find the stuff now before its scrapped. I just lost a D9E cat to the torch, it was less than 100 miles away but it was going to cost more than 2000 to 3000 bucks to haul it with over weight permits, pilot car service and truck time. Even if I pulled the blade it had rippers on the rear and still it weighed around 60,000, had to get permits for 6 different hiways. I'm learning I can't keep all this good stuff from going to china.

I have a D8H that I am still holding on but its hard not to justify scrapping it. With rippers and a blade she weighs about 30-35 tons. Its a rare first year 1959 model called a 35A most of them are 46s or 36s. But we get almost 300 a ton for good Cat steel here in CA. That is if you can get it to the Oakland ports. And yes it goes right on a ship to China. I had a 1959 Pete a year ago thought about restoring it but I ended up selling it to that wrecking yard near Stockton CA. that specializes in old Petes maybe you have heard of it. Cant remember the name.

I'm holding out for a 46A D8H or 66A D9G, I'm a powershift guy, thats why I've got 3 D4D powershift and one D4D direct drive. I keep the direct drive to pull the 40 scraper. Is that Courtland you are referring to on the peterbilt people near Stockton. I've talked to them on the phone about powersteering on the 288, I hope to go see them this summer.

Never heard of Bodean, and probably not the original owners. The biggest buyer of those trucks when new in the bay area was Kaiser Sand and Gravel.

The strange thing about this truck is that the frame and running gear is painted pink. All the air lines are pink and appear to have been painted at Newark before the cab was put on or the truck was wrecked and they put a cab kit on. The cab does not have any pink on it at all, every part of the rolling chassis is pink underneath the blue which was painted after the cab was put on. At one time there was a cement company around the bay area that had two tone pink mixer trucks, I have a picture of one, maybe the truck was not finished in Newark when the order was cancelled and the new owner had it finished in blue and white. Anyone have any ideas? I am told that someone has the records that will give you the first owners name and other details by vin number.

Mary Kay truck??? LOL. Interesting. I would think the PACCAR would have info on that vin. Maybe a call to the PR department might yield something.

Yes, pink was the correct original color for Kaiser Sand and Gravel trucks, and they were a big operation back then. Later trucks were painted blue with the same paint scheme. Here is a period photo from 1965.These trucks are 281 butterflys, not tilt front ends.

Hey, factorystock, you been holding out on us, those are great pics and have you got anymore, can't wait to add them to my collection. I'm convinced my rolling chassis was pink at the Newark plant, even the battery box is pink inside and out. Maybe this was the first truck to be blue and they just kind of changed in mid stream. What year did they end 281 production? Do you have any contacts at Kaiser, do you know what year they went to blue?

I believe the 281 model ended in 1975. But the last Peterbilt 281 with square doors was 1972. No contacts, and don't know when they went blue. Here is a 281 butterfly hood that probably was originally bought by Kaiser also.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAX99-BS3G4

Well, thats interesting, possibly our truck is a younger sister to the 3 T and T trucks, I've seen 3 trucks together in some pics. Thanks for the info, let us know if you think of anymore leads. Do you have any info on Bodean sand and agg, if you google it they appear to still be alive and well.

The key is to find the original purchasers of these trucks. There may very well be some pink under the blue on the '66.

Working to get 69 Pete compatable with Hyster lowboy, just got done with tail roll. Didn't want full or frame width tail roll so I used a bottom track roller off my D4D parts machine, don't think its ever been done before. Now I'm mocking up my winch mounts, space is tight so everything has to be just right. Using Tulsa 30000 lb hydraulic winch, when the winch is done the last thing to do is the fifth wheel ramps. Hyster has nice set of fold up ramps on the back but for hard to load items better to load from the front.
