My 64 Project
Hey all, figured I would show off my project a bit, not the prettiest thing ever but she's still in the works. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/100_1740.jpg
How she sat when I brought her home, fixed a few odds and ends, biggest thing being new front fenders. Now I'm waiting on money and space before tearing into it.http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/100_1829.jpg The eventual plan is to get the body fixed up, swap the frame for the one out of the 66 roller I also have, and pop in a 5.3 and T56. May also go a bit lower with it as well  http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...BaggedIdea.jpg |
Re: My 64 Project
I really dig your truck. Nice stance.

Re: My 64 Project
Thanks, think I may come down a bit in the front though. The huge fender gap bugs me. Second pic is a photoshop, inspiration to keep building.

Re: My 64 Project
A little update on this project. Ended up trading the C10 for a 66 GMC short wide custom cab. Here are a few shots of the truck when I got it. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...23611630_n.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...86319352_n.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...23814741_n.jpg
Pulled it out, cleaned it up, and threw some new wheels on it. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...77418876_n.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...14363721_n.jpg |
Re: My 64 Project
Moved to a new place that has a garage, meaning the GMC could make it out of storage and progress could be made. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...68755523_o.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...27570584_o.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...99715760_o.jpg
Started cleaning out the interior. The seats ended up in the trash. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...75434628_o.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...54249122_o.jpg Also swapped out the front fenders for some in better shape. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...27890269_o.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...16394927_o.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...86127734_o.jpg |
Re: My 64 Project
Got some small stuff knocked out. Picked up a bumper and got it hung. Also found a new bulb for the headlight. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...50045025_o.jpg
Swapped out the steering column for a nicer setup that i had laying around. http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...70836443_o.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...74501168_o.jpg http://i858.photobucket.com/albums/a...75383307_o.jpg |

Need to get this thread back up to speed. A lot has changed in a short time. Since the last update, got the front end updated with 73-87 a arms, drop spindles, and some lowering springs. The rear end got a flip and I also removed a few overload springs from the leaf pack.

The engine and trans finally got set down in the truck, everything lines up and fits perfectly. Also went and picked up a donor parts truck for a few parts. Personally I think patina teal is the best color for these trucks.

Moved the truck to a shop while moving to a new house and ended up losing out a ton of potential work time on it. I did build a new grille for it out of boredom, and got a few small odds and ends done when it returned home.

Finally got her all together and had a chance to drive out to greaserama this fall. Sadly that was about all the road time she got. Currently the truck is back in the shop having some transmission issues worked out. Once it's done, plans are to replace the floors, raise the bed floor, and notch the rear end. Waiting for it to return while working on a high hump section for the cab.

Thanks guys! Really hoping I don't lose much of my rake when I notch the rear. The rockabilly hotrod look has kinda grown on me.

Picked up a pretty solid chevy cab from a few hours south of me the other day. The plan is to try and use the sheet metal I can, and attempt to repair some of the rust on my truck. Looking through a lot of build threads, I've noticed that about 90% of you guys are pulling the cab to do floor work. Am I in for a world of hurt if I try and do this with the cab still on the truck?
|
Re: My 64 Project
I think it’s a lot easier to pull the cab but would depend how extensive the metal work is if your just changing a couple floor panels it’s probab not worth it. But if your like me and the floor was rotted along with most of the cab supports and rocker panels etc I would pull it just my opinion

Re: My 64 Project
I don’t think I would pull it because all of that stuff is easily accessible without doing so. I’m putting my cab back together right now and I lift it off to get my supports in place but all the floor panels I have been welding in with the cab sitting on the frame I find it’s easier to line stuff back up with it on the frame especially if it’s possible keep the two rear cab bolts tight so the cab can’t move because it’s a bit of a job to realign it

Re: My 64 Project

So I got bored while waiting for the gmc to get done in the shop and gutted the parts cab I picked up. Before anyone gets mad, it had no title and there was rot in the roof, so it went to a better place. Surprised how well it held up even with my cutting. Now the floor is ripe for the picking to be used in the gmc.

Oh wow this thread is out of date. A few quick photos for update: discovered my cab rot was far worse than I had thought, so used the vast majority of the sheet metal off of the cut up parts cab to repair the floors and cab corners. Also had to get creative on a few patches, like the weather stripping channel. Ive made a ton more progress since this, I just need to find the time to update it all...

Re: My 64 Project
Wow, that's a bunch of work. Thanks for the update.
And you say you did even more? |

A little more update: once the cab was back together, took the truck to a buddy to get the frame step notched. Then redid the fuel system, a Boyds welding tank fit the bill quite nicely. Also swapped in some chrome, and decided that patchwork primer wasn't a good color. Ended up settling on some Rustoleum Vintage teal as my new color of choice. :metal:

Swapped out all the cab and core support bushings for new. Then continued with both panel painting and also rust repair. Very excited, I managed to score a set of 66 910 badges for the truck, which are quite hard to come by in Kansas. Decided that the 73-87 lower arms hung too low (put some really nice gouges in the blacktop on a dip) so I swapped them out for some CPP tubulars.
*Sorry for the fact there are only 5 pics per post. My photo bucket got deleted and the forum only lets me direct upload 5 at a time.* |

Snagged an OE fender to replace the wonky repop on the passenger side. Needed a little love, but nothing terrible. For making this up as I go, Im not too upset by how the repairs came out. Im definitely not a body man, but I guess I'll fake it until I make it.

Along with the fender and a few other parts, I got a set of inner door panels. I figured I would see what kind of damage I could do with a bead roller on them. I really like the outcome, however unfortunately I warped the hell out of them. Hopefully I can get them worked back straight and use them. Gives the truck a nice kustom touch.

A few other odds and ends: found a set of year correct chrome grille letters, as well as some rather nice headlight visors. Also picked up a nice chrome front bumper for the truck as well. Got super lucky and found a 66 Miss America license plate for the truck. Not sure I'll leave it there all the time, but it makes for a really awesome touch at shows. If I ever get this thing done and go to them at least. Right now the current project(s) on it are painting the cab and doors, the bed is having a set of 59 caddy tail lights frenched in, working on fabbing up mounts for a 59 Buick rear bumper I scored, and also waiting to get the bed back so I can install a set of 61 Impala rear wheel arches on the bedsides before painting and reassembling them. I've also taken a different route on the wheels and tires. Sorry guys, but no more slots. Soon she will be riding on a set of white walls mounted on truck rallies so that I can run the Cadillac sombrero hubcaps I picked up. Going to be a fully different truck once I get done. Hoping to have it together and finished for my wedding in June 2022, so it's crunch time! I'll try and update some more progress pictures as I can. Gotta transfer them from my phone to the computer.
