69 K-10 LSx/4L80/205 Build for Dad
Just finished up my Blazer build http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=529064, and figure I'm starting to get rolling on this (re)build so I'd start a build thread.
I've had this truck for 18 years or so now. Started building it with my dad when I was 14, and it was an incredible father-son project. The "first" time we built it, we took it down to a bare frame http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps6a40d4ca.png http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...pscf78d779.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...psd8ded35e.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps1b34339f.jpg Drove it all through high school, took my wife to prom in it, and brought my daugher home from the hospital in it (ok not really...it was cruddy and rainy that day, but she went for her first ride 2 days later....but you get the point). http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps744f0261.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n..._5814987_n.jpg The truck has been through many iterations. It's will have had 5 engines...(250 I-6, 350, 5.3L, 6.0L, 5.3L), 8 Transmissions (3 on the tree, Muncie M22, 700R4, 2 4L60Es, and 3 4L80Es) It's been N/A, nitroused, turbo'd and is now going back to N/A. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...psb07cfbb8.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n..._1759030_n.jpg In the quest of a more family friendly hot-rod, I tore the blue truck apart, stealing parts here and there for the Blazer project. I couldn't stomach selling to anyone as a running truck, since it'd make me sick knowing that someone else was driving MY truck. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps4e959d41.jpg Now to the point of this story: My dad helped with funding and building this truck, as well as my younger brothers' high school hot rods....but he hasn't had a fun toy of his own since he sold his 72 SS454 Chevelle 35+ years ago. He loves this truck as much as I do, and has spent a lot of time riding shotgun and working on it with me. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps20d7a50f.jpg SO....I figured the best bet was to put it back together for my dad and give it to him. He has always liked the 4x4 trucks of this era, and is a big LS power fan, so that's what we're building. |
Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
Dad wanted a 4x4, so we searched and found a very clean 72 3/4 ton 4x4 frame for sale near Branson, MO. It was in pieces, but that's no big deal.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps7b0e6cb4.jpg We really "started" on this project this past weekend...on father's day. So that's pretty fitting. We are bolting the frame together for the time being, so that I can fabricate the necessary mounts to put the LS engine and 4L80E trans, along with the NP205 t-case into the frame. I'll then blow it all apart again and have it powdercoated before final assembly. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps7ed93c48.jpg Here's dad doin' work. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...psd266ae09.jpg Here's the powerplant that's going back in. 2005 5.3L L33. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps900049a2.jpg The lift kit also showed up last week. It's a Tuff Country Soft Ride 4" with new leafs all around. |

Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
Getting ready to hit this project hard. Been collecting parts and trying to figure out exactly how I want to approach this build.
Should see some real progress soon, but in the mean time, I picked up a FWD LS4 5.3 for the heads and some other goodies to complete the L33. http://imageshack.com/a/img407/2567/iujm.jpg |

Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
Ok, so the Dirty Dingo mounts and 4x4 crossmember showed up last night. Normally I'd build all this stuff myself, but I'm pretty burned out, and in kind of a hurry...so buying and bolting stuff in is a nice change of pace.
http://imageshack.com/a/img716/2994/x1rv.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img826/1526/dvyg.jpg Everything is just loosely bolted together right now until I can square everything up and tighten it all down. I'm pretty impressed with the DD stuff. http://imageshack.com/a/img843/9224/oexs.jpg I do a ton of LS swaps, so I made a mockup engine and trans out of a blown up LS1, and a busted 4L80E case. I can pick the whole thing up by myself....but it is still pretty heavy, lol. http://imageshack.com/a/img834/7725/dgl4.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img29/9954/4jdi.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img689/4122/iqyf.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img812/9027/gpql.jpg Hoping to get any other fabrication that needs to be done, finished up this weekend, so that I can send the frame off to powdercoat. Can't wait to have a rolling chassis again! |

Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
Had my little helper out giving me a hand for a bit yesterday.
http://imageshack.com/a/img818/470/n4ly.jpg The old trans crossmember for the NP205 wouldn't work with the NP241 adapter, so I had to weld up the holes and re-drill for the newer mounts http://imageshack.com/a/img833/1820/vzja.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img69/1407/joxi.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img33/1820/wa63.jpg Planning to run the factory 5.3 A/C compressor on this build...fits nice, but need to trim the frame some to allow room for the refrig. lines. http://imageshack.com/a/img545/6333/78mi.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img41/5966/szj7.jpg Plasma cutter to the rescue http://imageshack.com/a/img534/2931/7ll2.jpg |

Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
There was a little bit more slop in the rear diff than I was comfortable with, so out it comes, and in will go a brand new Eaton posi, Richmond gear 3.73 set and all new seals and bearings.

Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
Little more progress on the engine. Has a full 05 LS6 top end, including the cam, springs, 243 heads, and super light hollow/sodium filled valves.
http://imageshack.com/a/img62/2968/gohm.jpg Rolled the chassis outside for some photos before 1) It gets cruddy outside 2) The body starts going back on. http://imageshack.com/a/img198/3407/fnev.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img36/7997/hjep.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img594/8457/3opy.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img823/7886/erzk.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img96/7157/v6tl.jpg |

Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
Got the engine all buttoned up. Gotta finish up the transmission and transfer case next so I can drop it all in the chassis.
http://imageshack.com/a/img690/9574/agyk.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img833/7875/wku4.jpg I decided to go with a 1990 K/5 Blazer fuel tank...for a couple reasons. 1) It has a 31 gallon capacity, and since it's a lifted longbed, the extra size of the tank is a non-issue. 2) Those blazers came with TBI engines, so the tank is already baffled and set up for an in-tank pump. I am just swapping a higher output pump in place of the 12 psi TBI pump. http://imageshack.com/a/img4/9363/iwb3.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img34/1628/ogub.jpg Took the stock sender/pump bracket and cut it and welded it last night. The 3/8" feed, i was able to use my 37* AN flare tool and flare a tube nut onto that line. The 5/16" return line was a little trickier, so I cut up a steel JIC fitting and TIG'd it to the return tube. I also welded the evap tube closed, as well as the tank vent. I was planning to rely on the vented fuel tank cap, but I might cut the plug out of the vent and run it after all. http://imageshack.com/a/img30/7818/js1z.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img27/2478/wwqj.jpg |
Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
Got the fuel pump mounted to the hanger and installed in the tank. Was way easy...almost too easy. That can't be good. lol
http://imageshack.com/a/img407/4691/8tgx.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img96/7828/ldh2.jpg The tank fit perfect in the rear frame rails without having to move the rear crossmember. There's even plenty of room between the tank and the diff...no worried of bottoming out and slamming the tank to the axle. http://imageshack.com/a/img853/7610/565d.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img191/5346/nbr8.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img812/9104/cpez.jpg Just had to fab up a crossmember to go in front of the tank to attach the tank hanger straps to. Also started routing the return line to the tank in aluminum hard line. http://imageshack.com/a/img577/1190/6wdq.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img9/324/gju3.jpg |
Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
I really like the sender modification you did for the fuel pump. I may have to steal this idea.

Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
Finished up running the fuel and brake lines to the rear of the truck, to prep for putting the bed on.
http://imageshack.com/a/img191/7876/961e.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img692/7641/8pm5.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img40/9449/mpir.jpg The body mount hardware showed up, so I figured why not throw on the bed... http://imageshack.com/a/img20/406/jn5r.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img692/3883/w0qu.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img96/700/ztn4.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img801/1513/q46q.jpg Gave it a bath to get rid of the year+ of grime and crud on it. http://imageshack.com/a/img843/7199/gcxc.jpg Next up, mate the engine/trans/t-case and slam it in the chassis. |

Re: 69 K-10 Build for Dad
Rebuilt the transfer case last weekend, and swapped to the 32 spline input that I needed to mate to the 4L80E. Also pulled the pan off the trans, and cleaned everything up in there...then painted it all.
Got the engine/trans/t-case set in place...kinda/sorta last night. Was bummed to find that the stock 4x4 trans crossmember will not work with an NP241. The front output would be directly in line with the crossmember......so I guess I get to fab one up. http://imageshack.com/a/img36/2758/zw2r.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img200/7503/lger.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img89/8909/f1u6.jpg |
