86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So this project started off 2 years ago and has taken a few twists and turns up until this point.
I started off just wanting to do a basic "rebuild" after I purchased this truck off of Kijiji. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps619e3f19.jpg I went and looked at it twice, then drove it home. Looking back now, I should have put it on the road first as it drove real good. According to the paperwork, it was only about 3 years and 12,000km since it's last safety with alot of new parts in the front end and brakes. But I tore into it right away instead. It had a "built" 350sb with 4bolt main, bored .030 over with flattops, cam etc etc. It had the very common "farmer" 4spd and NP208 TC. Full Silverado interior that was in good shape which was a selling point for me also. :metal: http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps81fb76fb.jpg It was very muddy / dirty and the "16" on the glass is a hint as to why. It started off with alot ( I mean ALOT ) of cleaning with the preasure washer. Then off with the Box http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps14242a93.jpg Stay tuned....More to come! |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So after the box, I got the front end off. The inner fenders are keepers and the outers are rotten on the bottom inside. Time will tell if I will attempt to repair them or replace them.
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2b9d2f10.jpg Then after stripping out the interior, I made up a simple cab lifter for my shop hoist and a cab dollie out of 2X4's http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb608c94f.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps16aa5da0.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse4011c82.jpg |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So at this point, again more cleaning by the kid with the pressure washer.
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb95857b2.jpg Then started stripping the frame of all exhaust and drive train. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psd49735ec.jpg Now just before we pulled the engine we drained all the gas and ran it dry. For some reason I decided to compression check all the cylinders. Well this was the first surprise. All had between 175~180psi except #5. It had 65psi. CRAP. Tore into it right away... http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0197f384.jpg Yup, that is cracked piston between the rings and broken rings. Double CRAP. :cuss::cuss: Oh well back to the frame... http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psbad9d4b4.jpg |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Next thing was get the frame stripped of all the not needed brackets and the axles. The plan at this point was to still use the existing drivetrain and rebuild the frame up with new components and paint.
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psab5c1842.jpg Got the axles out then setup for removing springs and brackets. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps870dfea1.jpg Moved the frame away from the house and spent a complete day taking turns sandblasting the frame with my son. Note: I have no desire to ever do this part again. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psecafeb9d.jpg |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
The next day my son decided to take on the 10 bolt. He got it broke down and ready for paint.
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psfef323fc.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7854d0ed.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8ae5b14c.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4e55fff6.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pseca8fa34.jpg At this point it was time to start thinking about paint. I have spent many hours researching and while there are many different ways to go I decided to go the POR15 way. Felt good to see the first part of the project with some color and no rust. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pscfdad42e.jpg |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Looking good. You went in both feet first on this one!

Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
nice progress, keep it up!!

Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So like I said before, I went with POR15. I will not go into a lot of detail on it or even pro / cons but, It is very time consuming and a Must to do all the prep as described.
Here is the frame after all the prep and rusted back up before 2 coats of gloss black por15. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2f82e956.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8d9d8671.jpg Also at the same a getting ready to paint the frame, my order from Rough Country came in. :metal: http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb2932d97.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse884fa0e.jpg 4 inch All spring system. 4 springs, 4 shocks, steering arm, U bolts etc. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2d99243a.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc0e124ce.jpg |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Looks like your off to a great start . I have seen this truck before it lived just down the road from me . What are your cummins and driveline plans for it? Where does the truck live now ?
|
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Quote:
Thanks and yes you would be correct. The truck according to the history I have, it lived in Orillia between 98 and 2007. The truck was re-done in 98. It changed hands 2 or 3 times till 07. Someone bought it and re-did allot of the mech to get it to pass safety. It has only approx 12,000km since then till I bought it. I did not realize how good it was until I tore into it. It would have easily passed again with mininal work. It drove real nice down the road at 100k. Even the E break works and the cables still look new. The Truck now lives in New Lowell and in undergoing a full frame up. As far as driveline goes, the plan as of right now is a 1997 P-Pumped 12 valve. Getrag360 and possible divorced NP205. If not, then a just a 1st Gen 360/205 combo. I already have a good getrag 360 2wd. I have all the swap parts needed except TC. The 10 bolt front and 14 bolt rear, the rear 4:10 detroit locker, will stay for now. This truck will be on-road only with just 4wd for snow roads. No heavy duty off-road. |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Well after thinking about for a long time, I decided not to spend any $ on the small block. Even though it was still a good setup with the cracked piston. It is amazing that it didn't let go and do damage. The cylinder was in perfect condition.
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse0ed7880.jpg So instead....hmmm, I have this sitting in the driveway doing nothing. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psce84d4ba.jpg An original 1 owner 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT 4wd club cab long box with 287,000km. Blown rad, blown auto tranny, every steel line rotten, total front end srewed, needs total and everything to do with breaks. Fenders rotten, doors rotten, floors-rockers-cab corner rotten. Basically needs everything and anything to get even close to road worthy. So then, that's it. Pulled the plug. Sold everything in Kijiji that I didn't need or want for the 350 4spd 208 TC. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2a0f59d1.jpg Then started this.... http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc0a95789.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psf8bfdecf.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psbf031445.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps805c05b3.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0f00e611.jpg NOTE: If you pull the rear valve cover and rocker assy, you can pull the 12V with the bumper and the hood still installed. You just have to shift it slightly to clear the Xmember. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pscc2ea4fe.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc3292053.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psac0bb161.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psd4434e03.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psbc01e308.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9d2592c8.jpg It was hard and easy. Did it by myself. Stay tuned.... |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So I was in the middle of searching Kijiji for parts and such and a came across this guy that was parting out a 93 2wd. All he had left was the complete engine/trans combo with low miles and recent getrag360 rebuild. After a couple emails back and forth, the seller agreed to separate the engine from the rest of the package. Now I really was looking for a 4wd setup but this sounded good as my 1st plan was go divorced TC. I went for the 45 min drive. Glad I did. After separating the engine, I picked up the eng adaptor, bellhouse, flywheel, complete clutch including all the pedals and hydraulics, complete driveshaft, trans xmember, good denso starter, and the recent rebuilt transmission. Time for pictures....
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4bb2eee2.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps224a8673.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps224a8673.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps276f620c.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps883f1d65.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc46b6302.jpg Got all that for 500 bills. :metal: Looking back now I am kicking myself I didn't take the 12Valve also. :banghead: |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Yep got to love kijji . It never gets turned off in this house !!! Have bought and sold more stuff off there. Truck is coming along nicely. I just did a cummins conversion on mine this winter . Best thing I ever did . Check out diesel wrenchers thread , V rig if i recall. Its a 85 burb he just did . Super job on it.
Keep up the good work . |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Hey have you asked around ? Can you use the 208 behind any of your current setups?
Not the strongest t c on earth but should do the job / |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Yes I have checked out all the diesel builds. They are all very good, and informative!
I had considered using the 208 behind an NV4500. That is still a great option, but not now. I sold off the 208. I want a 205. I've still got time to figure that part out. Divorced 205 is my first choice. If I can't get that, then a 205/getrag 4wd combo will go in. |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Great work you're doing here! I had plans to do a ZF5 and divorced NP205 in my brother's 84 K20. I ditched the divorced tcase idea because the drive line angles weren't that great at all. His chassis was already painted and such. So on yours, if you cut off the spring perch mounts on the rear axle, you can set your pinion angle where you want it and get it pretty close I bet. Keep up the good work!
|
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Thanks for the feedback. I have been reading your builds/threads. Very interesting and good information also!
I think I will end up using an original 1st gen 4wd getrag/205 combo. That seems to be most reasonable as many have done when keeping a pass side drop in the old Chev's. For now I will continue on with the 2wd rag. It will be easy at any time to convert my trans with a 4wd shaft and tailhouse and 205. If I can find parts and such or complete 205 for a divorced setup for reasonable money, well we'll see. |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Whats your 81 militairy truck all abt ? Theres a 76 down the road from me that still has all the original equipment on it . I was thinking how cool a 4 in lift and a cummins would make it !

Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Quote:
It had the full canvas back with the 2X8 benches in the box. It was a cool truck with only 100,000 and it needed nothing to safety. It lived it's short military life in Kapuskasing, Ontario at the CFB there. I lifted it with 4inch body and 6inch spring lift with 38inch gumbo's. Then ran it hard with my buddy's. Had it until 91~92 till I traded up to my 72 1/2 ton. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pscdb8b49d.jpg Mine on the left, and the first, 1st GEN Cummins on the right 1 week old in 1988 ! This is 6inch only, no body lift and 33inch tirea http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps60bc39d1.jpg |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So back to the build.
I got the front and rear axles temporary installed with the new springs for mock up. I leveled the frame, side to side, front to back, to begin the more interesting stage of this build which is fabricating new engine mounts. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps857336d4.jpg I installed the chev mounts back on the frame to see if they would be any good to use. ( turns out no, didn't want them ) I started off marking the front support for clearance cut for the balancer. It's a little hard to see but that small hole in the center lines up perfect with the crank/driveline/14Bolt. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psedb1866a.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psd421cda4.jpg So then I temporary mounted the adaptor and bellhousing in preparation to set the engine into the frame. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8783d772.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse5401f83.jpg So then I lifted to little engine assembly into place. I removed the front balancer to clear the xmember. I wanted to first see how things lined up before I cut it out. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb3ff64b5.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0f1057df.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3e915b35.jpg Once I confirmed things like the Vac/Hydro pump and turbo would clear I started pulling/holding the engine into place using ratchet straps. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3032f04c.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps446d57a7.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps000af506.jpg I used the old xmember and wood to hold to weight in the rear and a block of wood and floor jack on the front. This made it easy to raise/lower the drive angle as needed. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps829455ee.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps69f56c56.jpg Front jack. Also note the large amount of oil pan clearance! http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps07d935ea.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps01686ddf.jpg Lots of starter clearance. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps603ac7dd.jpg Driveline angle mockup. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psbe57d29f.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps247bc5ae.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps983278fd.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9390ab7a.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7e6603bf.jpg With the straps and blocks and lift all pulled tight, this thing isn't moving. Now it's in the right spot, time for the mounts to be fabbed up! |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So at this point I decided to keep the 2nd Gen engine mounts on the block and fab up connecting brackets to the frame. I also want everything to be bolted/removable ie: no welding to the frame.
Also was surprised when the stock 1st Gen trans xmember was almost a perfect fit AFTER setting the driveline position. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4782b621.jpg I had to cut about 1-1/2 inch off each end to make it fit perfectly. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4782b621.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psd82a40f2.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0900e469.jpg This xmember works great as it will allow exhaust pipe clearance as well. Factory trans mount lines up perfect as well. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps815a7595.jpg Next was a lot of deep thinking on how to setup engine mounts. I have spent several hours, maybe days, researching this. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9d066a17.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps06f0a35a.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps21d404e3.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psbbdd9ef6.jpg So I came up with this great idea using some box board from old cereal boxes. I started large and cut my way down until I could actually bolt it up to the frame and mounts. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps736d7229.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps74753f10.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps86361fca.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psf24547a4.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps52311a7b.jpg It got it pretty close and I was happy with what I got. So Then I went and bought some metal. |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
I went to "Barrie Metal Superstore" ( what a place ! a must for us small guys needing metal ) they will cut to order what ever you want big or small and great price!
Started off with a 6 foot piece of 4inch 3/16. I think this is thick enough. Anything bigger is overkill for on-road DD like I am going for. If I was going hard core, off-road I would have boxed the frame and gone bigger/thicker/stronger. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psfdef08a9.jpg I started off by cutting off 12" and temp bolt set to the inside frame rail using the templates I had already created. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4812b6a0.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8c0a691b.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse6cc517c.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps089ae195.jpg Some adjustments were necessary because I didn't take into consideration for the 3/16 thickness compared to the box board. Notice the oval hole in the template now. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps54831d67.jpg I used the box board to copy over to the metal. Then used that to create a mirror image to come up with front/rear. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps65623528.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb8ee3f29.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psab3a8238.jpg Next I moved on to the other side using the same method. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psf9a93e22.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psca4bbcb5.jpg No drill press at home. Could have used the workshop at work but it worked out alright, Started small then worked up to final sized bit. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse568f915.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psf89769c3.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psbc081510.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps752184de.jpg Bolted the two together to finish sand them to make sure they look the same when bolted up. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psf9f1e6b5.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psd0203e0f.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1acfc012.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1f4aaacc.jpg So I clamped and bolted them into position on both sides at the same time. Then I reconfirmed positions etc and tack welded them together. For some reason I didn't get any pictures of that. Here they are all mocked up on the bench. Now they just need reinforcing and final welding at work using a "real" mig welder as mine is just the toy version. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb8d07ca2.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps07ac7d47.jpg See my "toy version" mastercraft $500 welder on the floor. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psfef2a223.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psbfbc748c.jpg Its starting to get into the interesting stage. The end of this post brings me up to March 13. I still got lots of progress to post from the last 3 months or so. I hope others will find this usefull, even if it is in some tiny little way. I know I have learned alot from reading these forums! Stay tuned..... |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So it's like 40`c in the Garage. It's hotter than  Might as well keep going on this build thread.
I pulled the motor back out and started on the front xmember. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb7889e47.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psa22fb261.jpg I cut out the clearance trying to stay as smooth and even as possible. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psba022d14.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps42f44bd4.jpg Put the engine back into place to check. Looks good but not enough. (better than too much) I will need to cut more. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5c009a74.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc0ac334a.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc8219652.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3e7670b5.jpg No, all that weight is still on the hoist ! Take 2. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psde20bdba.jpg Back to the motor mounts. They need to be re-inforced. I used some 1" angle on the inside and more 4" plate top and bottom. Then an additional angle on the top. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psa89df622.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psd3b28b8d.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6ad52987.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4ea7f61a.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psf2581366.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psa31f5d74.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psef70e272.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps24e69500.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4aa8cd67.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps77464c2a.jpg The bracket still needs more welding but you can get the idea. The other side the about the same. You can see the supports a little better before this side gets welded. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psfac6cbab.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb604331a.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1c35ee9f.jpg Stay tuned......:fb: |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Well then I got the front xmember cut down some more and then dropped the engine back into the frame to check it out.
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps76dc1208.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9e212c0d.jpg Looks much better now. Just have to clean it up and paint it. I am not going to re-inforce it. It will be strong enough plus I have a 2x2 tube welded just in front of it ( below / behind the bumper ) with welded tow hooks. Started mocking up the exhaust at this point. I am going to try and re-use a stock 2nd Gen front pipe. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pseab2d6d5.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8b6bac04.jpg Also mocked up the stock 1st Gen driveshaft. It fits perfect. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps523e711b.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps816f2c37.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps14e5ba53.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc3187b15.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8f48de3e.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7f045667.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps44b9b69b.jpg Time to break it down and start cleaning, re-sealing and painting everything up! |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So I pulled the engine yet again and started stripping it of parts and taping up the ports etc for heavy duty oven cleaner, brake cleaner and scrapers and brushes.
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps03a4429f.jpg Got the exhaust ports and main all covered up. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse5dfa815.jpg Cleaned up somewhat then got ready to pull the p7100. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps57db3427.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psab5718fc.jpg Now for some reason I didn't take any pictures of the IP removal. :banghead: But I will say that it wasn't hard at all. If it was still in the Dodge, I think it would take forever. I confirmed my "pin" timing was still set. It was bang on ( as far as pin timing goes ) So I at least had a starting point for re-install. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psff2e4886.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse9b3f370.jpg Picked up a plastic tote to use for Clean safekeeping. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb19378a9.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps33b20a33.jpg Started glassbeading some of the parts like valve covers and intake horn. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2bebcfed.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps27885057.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psbd113983.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps52810df2.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psd26a9c93.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps30a90ae7.jpg Back to scrapping and cleaning. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc18bc587.jpg |

So after a lot ( a lot ) of cleaning I pulled out the POR15 Marine Clean and started cleaning some more ! This stuff is awesome. Really good, strong stuff!
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps61e5d47c.jpg The remaining rust starts running off after sitting for only a few min. A good stiff brush worked all over the area really accelerates it's performance as well. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psa22f9634.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psdbf30182.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1f9c430c.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc9ec7a6a.jpg Then you get out the POR15 Metal Ready. This is the stuff that etches the metal and leaves the zinc phosphate coating. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6677080a.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps17182aeb.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps86eae66f.jpg Keep it wet for 30 min then let it dry for a couple days before Paint. It has to be absolutely dry. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps492a3a51.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4527a43d.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse58df400.jpg Let it bake in the sun. Almost dry. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps54ce19ed.jpg Time for the fun Part. Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Nice work on your truck! Your engine cleaned up really well. Are you going to check to make sure the KDP, aka killer dowel pin, has been repaired in the front gear housing? Have you sat your cab on to make sure everything clears?

I have not set the cab on top with the cummins yet, I did do several quick measurements and a lot of pics for reference. Also a 3inch Body lift is going back on the truck. If I can make that less, I will try, but tire clearance will be a bigger issue. I will be running 35" tires for sure. |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Just a pet peeve of mine, make sure if the body lift is big enough, lift the bumpers!! Nice truck btw, looks great. I may put a 12V in my 75.

Bumpers always go with the body when I do it. The very first picture in this build thread has a 3" body lift already. It is going back into the truck again.

Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
I still to this day need to finish the motor mounts and supports and build a new engine xmember. I went ahead and finished welding the mounts and got to sandblasting / cleaning some parts to prepare for paint.
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps405356e9.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0170012b.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps553d9a9f.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2ef4bb94.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps64996f16.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps89c29908.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb9a98d55.jpg The glass beads in the enclosed sandblast cabinet does a real nice job. Then I started cleaning up the oil pan. I wanted to do this off the engine because I thought it was pretty rusty. Turns out it wasn't that bad. Took it outside to sandblast. It would have fit in my cabinet, but glassbeads are not as good on heavy rust. I use cheap sand in the pressure pot outside for heavy rust. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psfa4d4e17.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9776a854.jpg I didn't blast it perfectly clean as a bit of rust works better POR15. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psffac2a7b.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psa0af4a34.jpg Then started the process.... http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps43548029.jpg Powerwash after marine clean and metal prep. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps62969a7d.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0ada9b8e.jpg Ready or not it's time for paint. The prep for POR15 is a very long process. I sure hope it is worth it in the end. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0609d0ed.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2b22e60e.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps788fd5da.jpg 2 coats of Gloss POR15. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psfc0f6e0c.jpg Lots more to come..... |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build

Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So up to this point I have been pretty happy with the POR15 i've used so far. My biggest problem that I have been struggling with is that I want this old Chevy to last a long time, but I want to drive it too. This is something that can't be done in Ontario. All nice rides are put away 6~8months a year or they rot. I worked hard to keep that old Dodge clean but after 15 years with all the salt/sand on these roads, it is just a killer.
I decided to make another POR order. it looks good on all the frame bits and pieces so I did some more research on there High heat Manifold and Engine paints. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc9c48dd7.jpg I went for a six pack of POR15 Gloss black and a can of there Factory Manifold Grey for the turbo and exhaust. I was liking the red theme and decided I would also get a can of there "Chev Red". It was only $80 for all that and shipped to the door in 3 days. It is a little $$ but if it lasts it is a small price to pay. Time will tell? |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Started cleaning up the injection pump. I mounted it on my cheap engine stand and it worked great. It also worked great for the trans. They are very handy. I wish I had one to hold the Cummins. I may try to build myself one. I can see me using it.
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psb6b944bc.jpg Brake cleaner and wire wheel /brush worked good. My goal was just to make it look good painted. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse08317a7.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psafe896b6.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps94f2dd3d.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps719958a6.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3cc63ada.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps046d67d1.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9545026c.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1ec33f64.jpg Still stock...for now. |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
So I went ahead and checked out the POR15 "CHEV RED"
http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps944a991c.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8feff9e8.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5bdd26d5.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps921963fc.jpg I gotta be honest, the camera makes it like "pinkish" It does look better in person and better outside than in the garage. It is suppose to darken up also after some heat curing. I also did the Engine adapter. But Black was the better choice. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps98ff23c0.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps94017126.jpg I am not going for show quality by any means. I just want clean, and easy to clean. |
Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build
Before I painted the manifold, I needed to drill and tap for the EGT prob. I never did this before because I was too scared to do it on the engine for fear of metal crap getting inside and causing damage.
I started off with a partially sandbasted part. I did a lot of reading first then figured out where to hit the centre punch. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7bf7ed1f.jpg I bought one of this for the tool box awhile ago and finally had a good reason to use it. ( This is one of those great 70% off sale items that come up at Canadian Tire all the time ! ) http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps33280445.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5f0be0db.jpg Started off small and worked my way up. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psaadf72b8.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps34c77951.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...pse43779be.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1603e077.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3288121c.jpg Broke my Tap handle awhile back, but that didn't stop me. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc09a462a.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psa190a591.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psf6352128.jpg Finished. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psadfe9208.jpg http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...psc720ae97.jpg Temporary Plug for now. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2fc732b2.jpg |
