My new project the White Whale.

Just got this home today after chasing it for the last 5-6 months. The truck came from CA and was sold to one guy in MA then to another guy in MA. I'm the fourth owner this year. Anyway the truck is very stock and all there. There are a few spots on both sides that need to be repaired but overall it's in great shape for being 50 years old. I love the grill, 67 is my favorite now.

Re: My new project the White Whale.

Thanks guys. The plan is to put a 5.3 and 4L60E from a 2004 Suburban in this truck. Get it up and running and then start on the little body work that it needs and interior work after that. The drivetrain is coming from a running and driving vehicle and we are going to leave the motor and trans as stock as possible for now. Hopefully by next May/ April this truck will be running and driving and getting ready to car show season next year.

Once it's running and driving I plan on painting the whole interior interior white and doing gray trim, along with gray seat covers and gray carpet. Then plasti dip the whole outside white and black plasti dip on all the chrome/ polished trim pieces.

Eventually I'd like to put some Detroit Steel wheels on it, 20's in the front and 22's in the rear.

Thanks Hart Rod. It's going to be a big project but if I can get it running with the new engine and trans then I can start doing a lot of the small things.

Does anyone know what the original color of the engine bay should be? The truck is all white with a red interior but the engine and underside of the hood is All black.

Thanks,
Nick

I don't know if it is correct, but my firewall is white and the rest is black. LOOKS right. Here is a pic of my engine bay and a shot of the old burbon.
I like the stock ride height, but that's just me. Makes it very "usable" if that makes sense.

Good luck!!!

Re: My new project the White Whale.

Thanks guys. I guess I need to get sanding and prep for some white paint before the new motor goes in. I'll leave the fender wells black and paint the firewall and under portion of the hood white. This should be an interesting project. I've never painted anything this large before.

Re: My new project the White Whale.

Appreciated.

Just kinda makes sense that the firewall would be body color. And I think that's how I normally see em when they still have the factory grease pencil markings. Always on top of a color.

Re: My new project the White Whale.

Well I finally made a little progress on my 67 Sub.

I finished up the electrical work in my garage and pushed the Suburban in the garage for the first time. We removed the hood and I"m going to be getting the engine bay ready for paint before the new to me 5.3L engine goes in.

I'm also going to be removing both bench seats and installing the seats from the 2004 Suburban that the motor came frame. I felt like I was actually making some progress with the truck in the garage and seats ready to go in.

Good deal! Glad you are making progress on it. You will really like the 5.3/4l60e combo. If you haven't already, be sure and go to the LSx Swaps forum, there is a ton of info there on the swap. Keep us updated....

Thanks Leon. We are hoping to have it up and running by March/ April sometime. Once that's done then I can start doing some more appearance mods to it to make it look a little better. I already picked up a set of 16" 6-lug wheels and I plan on painting them black and I want to mount some wide whites on them. No trim rings or center caps.

Re: My new project the White Whale.

Here is a few more pictures of the seats I will be using. These came out of the 04 Suburban that a friend had owned. The truck had been used as a shop truck for his work for a while so it got REAL dirty. Before that it was owned by his boses wife who has a few kids. There was sticky stuff ALL over every panel in the truck.

Before:
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...psrcvtu99a.jpg

After I cleaned the left side:
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r...psinalo1ey.jpg

I used straight Simple Green, I'm going to put some leather conditioner on all of the seats before they go in the truck after they are all cleaned. The Simple Green worked green but took some elbow grease.

Re: My new project the White Whale.

Spent a little more time in the garage this week. Got both bench seats moved to the rear of the truck and pulled up the vinyl matt and what looks like the original backing to the rubber matt. It looks like this truck is all original from looking at the floor. I think it's the original sound deadening material on the floor. Any idea how to get that stuff up so I can put something like dynomat down?

Now it's time to do a test fit of the front and rear seats. Once that is done I can start having some brackets made to mount the seats. I have a friend that has a CNC table and he does side work with it.

If it is stuck down good it can be a bear to remove. In the places where you can see there is no rust under it I would just leave it and put the new stuff over the top of it. Double thickness will help with sound deadening and won't hurt a thing....

Thanks Leon. I guess I was just concerned of the new sound deadening material sticking to that old stuff. I can't see ANY rust on the floor at all. It's all painted red and then that stock stuff over it and most of it is stuck down pretty good.

I'm going to give that a try one of these nights when it's a little warmer out. I don't have any heat in the garage right now.

Sweet ride!!
The white with the red is an all time classic and a favorite of mine.
Btw if you use a heat gun to take out the insulation, use a fan to blow the fumes away from you if there is any, but if I was doing it I would leave that in there and just add more over it, if its clean and does not smell bad.

Thanks for the tip. I might just leave whatever is there for now. I know the white outside and red inside is classic. I think I'm going to completly change the outside and inside color to a pure white color like the Summit White on a new Yukon. I don't like red interiors at all.

Well you have to always build what you like and it should be way safer and comfortable. I pulled my interior and did similar to your plans.
You have a lot a seats for that burb, I will stick around and enjoy the ride.
Your seat looks very nice after the cleaning.

Thank you. The seats will do for now. They really need all new covers but cleaning them up will be all that my wallet will allow for a while. I just don't have the extra funds to do Everything that I want right now. So getting it up and running correctly is where my money will go to start.

That's what I was going to suggest.

Also, it is not sound deadening, it is vibration dampening, as is Dynamat and similar products. You can read everything you ever need to know Here at Sound Deadener Showdown. If you want to quiet sound you have to put down something with mass. A lot of people use MLV (Mass loaded vinyl), so putting Dynamat over top of that is just a waste of time and money. I had to get a lot of that off the floor in my suburban, it didn't take too long though. A lot of it came off easily with the knife, the rest I only had to use the knife to get most of it off, then use a little heat to get the rest, then wiped the floors with some lacquer thinner and all the residue came off.

Re: My new project the White Whale.

Spend a little time working on the truck yesterday. Put the hood on top of the truck for right now so I can have more room to work on the seats.

Here is the first test fitment of the front and rear seats along with the center console. It's pretty tight in there, I thought there was going to be a little more room really.

Thanks man. I'm keeping the white just changing the interior color and to also white. I also don't like any off white colors so pure white it is for me.

What do you have for a Suburban?

Nice those are the wheels I would like to get eventually as well and I really like those hubcaps with GMC center caps.

Re: My new project the White Whale.

Made some progress over the weekend. We got the motor removed from the 2004 Suburban along with the transmission and t-case.

Also, the one 17" wheel that I ordered from Summit is due to arrive tomorrow. Going to test fit the wheel then look for one used tire to also test fit before I order anything else.

Going to be ordering motor mounts this week. We planned out the fuel system for the truck and looking into wiring harnesses.

Also, tonight I'm going to take the seats back out of the truck and try to use the old bench seat frame to mount the new 04 Seats for the rear seats since they sit so far back right now with the 04 Seat mounts. Hopefully we can get that to work as well.

Anyway, making some progress, I'm happy about that.

Nick

Re: My new project the White Whale.

Got my new US Wheel Rat Rod 17x8 6-lug wheel in and test fit today. I only ordered one to start to check fitment. I'm also going to try a used tire in the size I think I want before I buy nicer tires as well. I'm looking at 245-50-17's for tires. Not sure if I'm going to run the same size front and rear or two different size tires. They do make the wheel in a 17x9 as well.

I purchased the wheel from Summit. $95 shipped.
