Well I'm going to punish myself and do the engine swap in the Vegas summer.. might have to invest in some kind of ac or swamp cooler.

1997 dodge 3500 was bought and engine pulled along with the 47re that is currently being rebuilt and converted to 4x4. Not sure how to mount transfer case

Screamin crossmember and engine mounts

40 gal tank.. need to figure out sending unit. Going with fass fuel pump.

All new suspension and components from offroad design.

She along with my 54 are my daily drivers..

Pulled her out to start cleaning and put some fresh gaskets on.. not sure which ones... also bought a 24v a while back but got super lucky finding the 12v.. everyone is scared of the 53 block.. not me I will roll it till she breaks kinda guy.
If anyone has any input please help this is my first diesel.

Pic of the table I'm trying to finish up before the swap takes all my time. Had the ibeams water cut and added some round rivets.

Re: 90 crew 1 ton Cummins 47re swap

I've heard that there is a noticeably better result (prolonged not leaking) if you use the genuine Cummins gaskets. Just what i've heard. Cool table, I like it.

I'm just starting to get around to the fuel stuff a few months into my build now. Thanks for the info on that. I got the heavy hitters of engine mounts, trans mounts, front brace, large rad mount, high mount AC, high alternator mount, auto to manual pedal and M/C, steering and hydroboost out of the way first. Are you converting to high mount AC?

Thanks for the reply, I was wondering if this forum has turned into an Instagram website where people r just here for the photos..haha. I really like your build. I am going with a high a/c mount being that i will not drive this car without an a/c. I don't think my 1 year old will like a hot car in the summer how I grew up with Virginia Slims choking us out in the back seat... What high mount do you suggest? Take care.

Also do you know anything about these 2nd gens with EGR? This is my third build and by far the most difficult when it comes to finding info...

Re: 90 crew 1 ton Cummins 47re swap

fass pump is a waste of time. the stock pump on the motor is capable of 700hp easily. more trouble than they are worth. I'm running a maxed and balanced farrel diesel inj pump, with the stock lift pump, and 3/8 line out of the tank. has enough torque to kill the nv4500 twice so far. upgrading to nv5600 soon. I don't race mine, just tow alot.

Not like instagram but traffic is lower here than it used to be. I still prefer sites like this for build threads. It seems like using those social sites for vehicles is just a random stream of attention deficit disorder drivel.

I just made my own high mount setup, but I like to fabricate. Its easier just to use the Freightliner setup.

Don't know about 2nd gens with EGR. Maybe Dieselwrencher (Ryan) does?

Almost about time. I have to return some gaskets because they r not Cummins.. thanks for the heads up.. I did go with Fass just because I've learned by building a daily driver that if u want it get it so u dont sell it after ur done because some stuffs not right or needs to be done.. I'm trying not to cut any corners so I dont end up at Chevy buying a new 2500 for 60k.

won't hurt anything to do it. just depends on if you want to do the work or not. probably be good sound deadening on the drum of a bed!

I like those rims. As far as the rhino lining, would just be sound deadening since you're in an an area where rust isn't an issue. I am jealous. My K30 isn't allowed on the roads during salt season.

What are the springs you got there?
I finally broke down and ordered a set from alcan today...4 week build time.

Ok have the engine and trans disconnected but didn't feel like pulling it today.. storage is a constant puzzle in my garage thankfully I grew up playing tetris..Haha it turns out most of my wires were bare..I'm surprised it did not catch fire. My front shock bolt was out..dont know how long ago that happened. I wish someone would buy this engine I'm not having any luck selling it here in vegas.. I think craigslist has finally gone cold.. speaking of cold I broke down and ordered a swamp cooler. The garage was 100 the other day a bolt broke when trying to remove (we all have been there) crushed my thumb.. it's one thing to crush a knuckle and another to have sweat burning ur eyes while tending to injuries..

Need to find a np205 dodge and good rubber body mounts let me know if ya have any advice...
Take care

They are also alcan.. definitely excited to hit a pot hole and not jar my back, hit my head on the roof, and have my wife glare at me for having an old truck.

Got her pulled..trans guy said he should be done this week. Has anyone used the Fire Punk stand alone harness? Was thinking of going that route. Going to throw the lift on and start working on the frame and fabin up some step bars that also will keep the family safe for side impact. The area where the saddle bags were in the pick above is what I would like to beef up. The 40 gal tank also is going to take some extra time. Not sure if anyone has done a 40 gal and have room for a gooseneck....

ditch the FASS, keep your 12V mechanical...as it should be, those lift pumps rarely fail if it is the original. replacement with fail do to poor redesign.

if you want aftermarket, look at the GDP FUEL BOSS>

Re: 90 crew 1 ton Cummins 47re swap

Very nice project you have going here! I hope your FASS is one of the new styles that don't lose their prime all the time. MAKE SURE YOU SEND IN THE WARRANTY CARD! They won't warranty it without it and you will need it. I'd return it if you could. The stock lift pumps are tough as nails.

Your build is looking good and you will like the anteater!

About the fass pump. My thoughts were that when on a dirt road doing 50 or off roading with a 40 gallon tank that's a lot of air in the tank and in the lines.. I haven't heard one bad thing about the original lift pump but finding a sending unit and so forth but when researching for a sending unit it seemed like I was getting no where, so I copied the "suburban doomsday build". Have the tank mocked up and the screamin mounts. They were a pain to install by yourself well built tho...

Anybody have good body mounts? Ordered some but they dont fit and are not built as well as the original ones..

Also looking for a 23 spring coupler for t-case and a brake like for rear diff see pic.. hope you all r doing well. Vegas is hot as dog balls..

Re: 90 crew 1 ton Cummins 47re swap

I’ve gotta side with everyone else, leave the pump mechanical. A 12V is a doomsday motor as it can run with zero electrical. I’d either run a stock pickup just verified to be close to the bottom or sump the tank. The stock lift pump is such a good design people retrofit them into the VE trucks before going electrical. It’s crazy the combination of factory parts you can use to make it all work, only aftermarket part on mine is the exhaust and radiator.

Re: 90 crew 1 ton Cummins 47re swap

On your rear brakes, scrap the load sensing valve. There have been a couple threads on here. GM added it to pass 1 specific fed.gov test and they are nothing but problems when they get older. I removed mine and I don't notice any difference loaded or empty.

Dieselwrencher 08-08-2019 08:32 PM

Re: 90 crew 1 ton Cummins 47re swap

Just build your own pick up tube. I have done it several times. You heat the brass or solder joint that holds the OEM pick up in the sending unit. Or you can even drill a new hole if the fuel sender is attached to the stock pick up. But you drill a 3/8" hole and use 3/8" line. Bend it how you need it, put a 30* slash cut on it and place it about 1/16" or 1/8" off the bottom of the tank. Braze or solder the new tube in. You can flare the end for a hose, or even add a tube nut before you flare it.

Now on the air removing pumps.... They do do a nice job of removing the air from the fuel. But that does you 0 good when your pump motor craps the bed and you are in BFE, or anywhere for that matter. Very few people stock those motors so now you are down and out. I have had horrible issues with the Fass pumps losing prime the last 2 to 3 years and that leads to mad customers. Who do you think they call when FASS doesn't answer? I'm just trying to save you some head aches. Supposedly FASS has redesigned the new versions to fix this but IDK. I quit selling them.

I also agree, get that load sense valve out of their. hey just create more head aches than they're worth IMO.

Hello,

Got the motor and transmission mounted, all frame boxed in. I'm not sure if it was worth buying the precut plates from diy4x4..had to spend a ton of time grinding, sanding, and cutting to make fit. Need to figure out the power steering lines right now until I'm able to move on.. there is a ton of stuff that I'm still trying to figure out and it seems my Google skills are slacking. Like the waste gate on the turbo, sensors, and other stuff. It's been fun so far and still think I can get her running by Christmas..cheers.

Have you thought about removing those aluminum heater hose extension tubes? I found hydraulic line fittings to adapt the huge pipe thread holes to 5/8 and 3/4 hose barbs.
