The build date project

Current to post 274, UP TO DATE AS OF 9/19/21

This project’s long term purpose is to help document and cement the build dates of these trucks we all love so much.

The way it works

If you don’t have a confirmed month/year that is fine, I will add your partial vin to the list in numerical order under the plant it was built, in the year it was built with TBD in the date column. This will allow those without confirmed dates to hopefully get a good accurate estimate as to when there truck was built based on trucks with close build sequence numbers(partial vin) and confirmed dates.

To do this all you have to do is either post the last 8 characters in your vin and a picture of your confirmed build month/year (the actual full build date from a build sheet is the best and very much the preferred source, but blue door stickers are fine too) and manufacturer if possible here, or PM it to me and I will add your info to the list.

This will allow us to have a running list of partial vins and dates that should become a huge asset to all 67-72 owners. Please post your info even if you have the build month/year already so we can help everyone on here.

Credit to SSTim for the foot work he laid for this project over the last several years, as well as Jocko, geunther, 402Bowtie and everyone else who has helped either in this thread or behind the scenes to get this rolling. I can’t wait to see the results. Thanks for the help!
This is the list by year and plant.

Yes as geunther said, they don’t have to be currently owned trucks at all. If you’ve got a verified build date for a vin, post it up.

Thanks for separating the threads Tyler. Appreciate the shout out - but I'll pass all kudos on to SSTim, he's the one that had this idea years ago - and also to geunther and Carl Spangler for reviving it. It will be a great reference that grows over time :)

Yes sir no problem. Absolutely SSTim deserves a ton of credit. Hope he pops in and sees this, I think he’ll appreciate it.

Hopefully, this is what you're looking for.

The build sheet is from my '72 GMC 4WD short stepside truck. I found it under the seat stuffed in the springs.

The blue tag, and sales order is from my '72 GMC Jimmy.

I hope they can help you.

Pat

Re: The build date project

I’m not sure how the blazer/jimmy and suburban/panels will factor into this yet. I fear that because they weren’t coming off the pickup assembly lines it may skew the pickup accuracy? Maybe I’m in left field? It might be best to have a similar list of them going in their individual sections? Anyone have thoughts on this?
I added your GMC short K10 ptjsk.

Very helpful. I added the Jimmy to post 2 but could not see the numbers well enough from the build sheet on the short step side. I am sure we will settle on one list (post 1 or post 2)but for now we are ironing out the bugs. Like 57taskforce said, adding Jimmys/Blazers might confuse things somewhat.

The build sheet is from my '72 GMC 4WD short stepside truck. I found it under the seat stuffed in the springs.

The blue tag, and sales order is from my '72 GMC Jimmy.

I hope they can help you.

Wow, they traded in a 69 Charger for that truck. I'm sure it had the Hemi;)

Re: The build date project

I don't have a build sheet for my Fremont built '69 (9Z833099), and '69s didn't have the door jamb stickers. But, after I bought the truck I noticed that my CST was missing some things (lighted deluxe side markers, cab headliner and cargo light) that were on other '69 CSTs I'd seen. I called GM, and they said those things were added during the model run after my truck was built. If I recall correctly, the build date they gave me was toward the end of the second week of December, 1968. The actual date may have been Friday Dec. 12. My truck was produced about 800 before another Fremont truck (9Z833902) on your list with the 12/5/1969 build sheet. Any estimate of what the lag time is between build sheet issuance to actual build, or how many trucks were built per day?

Here is my SPID for the VIN. Where would I find build date? Door jamb, glove box? I'll look and report if I find it or a build sheet under seat.

Done X4. Thanks guys!
Carl, nice detective work if any of you see any of this info here or elsewhere on the net post it up.

Jim, I wish SSTim still came around. He was the master at this stuff. I’m not sure honesty how many came off the line in an average day. I wonder if Keith Seymour could help there? I put you date as best educated guess basically. As more dates and vins fill in hopefully we can nail it down better.

Happy_dan, if you’ve got a build sheet that’s going to be your best bet for the build date. If not we’ll just have to wait for more vins and see how everything falls. I don’t think the earlier builds had the blue sticker on the drivers door.

Re: The build date project

Correct, no blue label on the 68 I guess. I have the truck on the lift right now (pulling motor to change all seals etc) so I can't get under the seat. I will try to do that as soon as the motor is out and I can push the truck back from the lift posts.

This is all that is on the door jamb. Not sure if that is from factory or not?? Maybe someone here knows?

Those are both factory notice the rosette rivets holding them on. Good luck with finding your build sheet, they are an amazing source of documentation. I hope you find it!

There are quite a few variables, too many to be accurate. However, for Freemont in 1971 where we have two build sheets, there looks to be about 7,761 units per month from the end of January to the end of June. You can extrapolate from those number to get a VERY rough estimate of 258.7 units per day (considering 30 working days per month)

I don't have the FMVSS plate below the weight plate, or the blue sticker? It's a repaint ("same" colors) so maybe that's where the blue sticker went. Once enough numbers come in, one could interpolate a build date.

That’s exactly one of the hopes here.

I think you can guess on the # built per day number for approx. provided you have a range to work with. For instance I'm not sure the build month on my C20, but there's enough data here to show very much approx. 6k Fremont per month during the period. So far it's enough to know the truck was built in Feb. or Mar. 72. Nice to see you first, been a while.

Edit, at another glance with an additional VIN added for 1972, looks closer to 7kish per month for Freemont. My 72 was likely given birth in March 72, still can't say for sure.

Some observations: Looks to be about 249 to 259 trucks per day. Freemont is the only plant from which I have seen a build sheet.

The second thread is using some of this data in a cut-n-paste process. Seems all very confusing.

I don't think anyone is cutting and pasting. Perhaps copy and pasting so that post one and two are reflecting the same information. If it confusing, it might be time to move to one post.

The second post is a result of a running document that gets added to when new information is available. The entire post is then updated. It was meant to be redundant until the best method was found.

Re: The build date project

The second thread was the original thread (this is the second thread) - this one was supposed to replace it and be one stop shopping for build date info (I think). I also thought the whole point was for members to enter their own info by selecting the quote button of the most recent listing, entering their data, and clicking submit reply - that way the thread would be self-building with the most complete list always being the most recent post. There was never any intent to do cut/paste (or so I thought). Anyway, I don't have a dog in the fight - geunther, if you're going to enter each post with data into post #2, that's great and quality control and accuracy will be awesome - but yikes that'll be a lot of work for you over time. Thanks very much to you and Tyler for taking the time to build this - will be a great resource. Also, since this thread should contain all the other thread's data and then some, I'd recommend, if op is willing, that he consider asking the mods to close the original thread - otherwise there will be endless confusion as both threads have similar titles and both will pop up whenever anyone googles 'build date' on here.

geunther 12-05-2020 10:54 AM

Re: The build date project

I suppose somethings are getting lost in terminology (post vs thread, cut and paste which removes original data vs copy and paste).

The original thread (without project in the title) was intended for everyone to quote the previous post, and like jocko said, that would keep the list current with everyone adding their own info. This would certainly involve the least amount of individual overhead. The problem was, it was not working as intended. Some users were quoting the post which was not the most current or complete. So there were trucks in some posts, yet not in others etc.

57taskforce started this thread (build date project) with the intent to be more involved with the list management, in an effort to keep it more accurate. By this time he and I were both trying to keep the original thread current. Information for this thread was received by individual posts and by private messages. Also, I was researching other sources for public data involving VINs and build dates and adding those.

Since the creation of this thread, I have not done any work on the original thread believing this thread to be the most current with the other thread fading away and believing the original poster of the original thread could find what they were looking for here as well as benefiting the community.

All of that being said, the last thing I wanted to do was make things more confusing. I won't speak for 57 but I think neither of us minded the work and thought it was a worthwhile project. Even if it involved daily checks and updates. I am more than happy to assist in anyway, even by stopping if that is best. My day job involves computer programming, so I am normally on all day, everyday.
