is that the White conventional you are refering too from the previous post ? if So i have two questions.. first i guess you cant beleive everything you hear on youtube as I was led to beleive the 8v's were pretty much millitary only

and second, I know where there is a 5500 ? in that style that is a long flat bed, and supposedly powered with a 350 how hard is it to repower those with a detroit ? is it even feasible ?

My knowledge is more '72 and back, but I would say that this truck is a '73 or a little newer.

The Doors look almost like the 67-72 style pickup doors ..... did they carry this same body style later in the " big trucks"

Just to add a little extra, the main reason for this newer style truck was because of the Radiator size. The older original "Low Hood" style 9500's could only have a certain size Radiator. This new style allowed for a larger one. Also notice the Larger Front Bumper and the additional Deflector under it.

Right, I was referring to the White Conventional.

The 8V-71 has been widely used by the government, but it was a pretty popular engine in Road Tractors and Trucks. Not only in GMC's, but many other makes as well, even Ford.

What size Detroit would you like to put into the 5500?

The Doors look similar, but are different.

In later years when they produced with the Brigadier, it was the same Cab, but a very different Tilt Nose front end.

Oh I dont really know, just always been a dream to have a screaming gear jammin Jimmy, not particularly usefull or anything and I really dont want a small block in a truck, something like a 4-53 or a 6v-53

The 5500 Series GMC in the picture is the same "type" of truck, and more like the earlier 9500's, but has many differences. One would be the lighter Front Axel, as well as the entire GVW. Notice that it has Narrow Fenders. The Axel is also more Narrow and probably a very different type in comparison.

A 4-53 would probably fit in the 5500 with little problems. I would have to check my books to be sure, but the 4-53 may have been one of the original options for that truck. A 6V-53 would be a little big for it, but I'm sure you could make it work.

Oh I realize the weight carrying differance between the series, just like a c-40 of earlier days will be lighter than a c-60 but the overall "look" is the same ( roughly) body wise,


i was thinking on cutting it down into a welders truck or a utility bed, kinda my go rescue my wife from the snow bank have the chains a winch etc etc , more of an ULTRA duty pickup, I just want it to look as nice as the 9500, love that squeezed down grill ( much like the early topkicks.. 93 or there abouts I think )

I dont have a need for a CDL truck nor do i plan to insure and inspect and upkeep one with a CDL GVW.... so it will be lighter than the 9500 but i really like that body style....the one I pictured looks just enough "off" that I am unsure if they are the "same" body style wise....

Many parts on it will be the same. The Cab would be basically the same, the Front Grille is the same, and the Butterfly Hoods are probably the same as the non-Tilt front end trucks.

Sweet!, thank you Bill, since my c-50 wrecker ('69) did not work out, I might have to pursue the pictured truck, but I am sure if I get it my bro in law will coerce me into turning it into a roll back recovery truck :P

If the Rear Axel is in the right position, it might just make a good Roll Back!!

One thing I have learned with old trucks is, basically speaking, the less work you have to on them, the better the chance that you will get it on the road. A lot of projects end up getting unfinished when the plans are too extensive.

I know that only too well, I am currently restoring 3 old WWII studebaker Weasel track rigs. they are small but a lot of work ....

Its a west coast thing. No head board required and I understand its not required federally either.

Kool it, it may not be required, but I was always sure glad that my Flatbeds had them!!

Depending on what kind of loads you are carrying, but generally speaking, you are either limited on what you can carry or you are taking a chance on the load possibly sliding forward.

Although rare, I have seen some around here on the East Coast.
