Burnt wire
I checked out the damage from the little wire fire today. The wire that runs from the battery to the fuse box was burned. Which ruined the headlight harness. It also burned from the fuse box to the ignition switch, pretty much taking out the under dash harness. Anyone had good luck with aftermarket harnesses?

I have no idea how it happened. About an hour after I got home I noticed the headlights turned on. went out there and the cab was full of smoke.

I'd bet some wires got pinched somewhere. Did you do any work just prior to this?
I once pinched some wires when I installed my rear bumper. Went for a drive and about 5 miles away from home, smoke started pouring out of the steering column! The cheapest way to go would be to grab a harness out of a junkyard truck. ------------------ 63 Impala*66 Chevelle SS*69 Chevelle*69 C10 Stepside*71 Cheyenne 20*72 Chevelle Parts for sale: http://www.angelfire.com/trek/mr409/items4sale.html |
M&H wiring makes replacement wiring too, they
sell it in pieces, so you can get the sections that have been damaged. I am pretty sure GMCPauls sells those. If you want to replace the entire thing, Painless makes a kit for our truck, 18-circuit. Sells at summit for approx 300.00 (I think) and it retains the factory style bulkhead... What ever you do, keep the old harness, until you get the new one in. ------------------ 71 Chevy C-10 SWB Fleetside WAS:307w/3-on-the-tree NOW:350TBI/700R4/3.73 See it at www.prismnet.com/~grzanich |
