65 c10 short bed daily driver budget build

Well let me start off by saying that it's good to be back on here. It's been a while since I have had a project Chevy. I bought this shorty this past Sunday in the I.E So Cal. Drove her home and began by removing the front clip and worked my way to the motor and granny shifting 4 speed. Today I removed the engine and trans for a light rebuild on that 327 SBC. After much thought I have decided to covert to auto tranny for some daily crusing . Turbo 350 or t400. This is a original truck inside an out. I plan on adding power steering, power front disc brakes , and a nice static drop. On the paint the plan is to rub some gibbs oil after cleaning to try and preserve the original # 512 GM paint . (Rare)Maybe some flat clear..feed back welcomed..
I will upload pics as I go. |

I like your plans for it. I rub mine every once in a while with Gibbs oil also. If you decide to go with a flat clear post up pictures. I have thought about that too. But the Gibbs does do a great job at protecting it. I'm subscribing to this thread.

So I took the camel hump heads to the shop for a hot tank bath...tore the motor apart and
Came across a mickey mouse repair...coolant was probably leaking at one point in time into the block. They added a piece of aluminum with screws and lots of cylicone for the repair. Block is bad in my book and I wont try and repair. Sad b day in my book.. |
Re: 65 c10 short bed daily driver budget build
Last pic of the tub is all the crap I took off from the front end...getting ready for some fresh paint.

Re: 65 c10 short bed daily driver budget build
That failed repair is pure evil in my book.
Glad the truck is in your hands. Sub'd |

So upon searching on craigslist I came across this sbc 350 with new matching transmission. And other parts. Took it apart for inspection. Looks super clean inside and out. Added new gaskets and pump and called it a day. Last pic is of the frame rattle canned black .As you can see the tranny is still in . I have to cut the manual cross member out so it can fall in one piece with drive shaft.

Re: 65 c10 short bed daily driver budget build

Re: 65 c10 short bed daily driver budget build
Looking for some feed back...I put the oil pan and intake manifold using felpro gaskets..Not sure if anyone has had trouble with the cork gaskets after installation. I feel I should maybe use only rtv or right stuff...The intake manifold I used the rubber bridge gaskets and some rtv where it met the side head port gaskets.

So I put in my sbc 350 with th350 today..and ran in to a problem...I bought a cpp 350 trans
Tubular crossmember and have no clue how it bolts on.. Also my tranny extends over the crossmember for the cable parking brakes.. Do I have to remove it...feed back please or. A link would be awesome. .. Not sure why my pics upload sideways...sorry Last pic is off a google search...my mount wont go in that way as the end tabs are welded in different spots. |
Re: 65 c10 short bed daily driver budget build
Anybody??
|
Re: 65 c10 short bed daily driver budget build
Looks to me like you have the older style parking brake cable assembly that required a cross member. If you convert to the 66 style the cross member is removed. I have a tremec tko600 in mine and am thinking of getting this tubular cross member. Only thing is I am not sure if it will work with the tremec. Looks like in the last pic showing the cross member installed the truck has a 66 year parking brake setup. Probably what your gonna have to do is remove it.

Re: 65 c10 short bed daily driver budget build
Thanks for the feedback...any Ideas as to the black cpp crossmember..Is this the correct position to bolt on. My parking brake dont work now ..so maybe I can remove everything and replace as I go .

So engine is in and the tranny is bolted and in place with a cpp tubular x member.
Got all the plumbing done as well as some new gauges under the dash..will load pics tomorrow. Just waiting on summit racing for the spark wires..also I need to run a keyed hot for the new hei distributor. I also need a trans cooler...thinking of going to oreillys and getting a hayden since its cheap and I am at stock hp.. Went ahead and shoped for a floor shifter for my th350..loved the lokar shifters but not the price. Ended up with a american shifter single action with a 23 " shifter could not beat the price at under $200. Heres a picture of that installed. Sorry for the sideways pics again..not sure why they upload this way. |
Re: 65 c10 short bed daily driver budget build
Looking good! I'm also using the CPP trans crossmember. I haven't bolted it down yet though. Need to drill new holes in the frame for it.

Re: 65 c10 short bed daily driver budget build
Nice work so far. I had to remove my e-brake cross member on my '65 too so that I could run a similar trans mount cross member. I converted over the e-brake cable to a universal set...
