speedometer and odometor not working

What would be the most common reason for both the odometer and speedometer to work intermittently. Speed sensor maybe? This vehicle is a '97 Blazer 4x4 with a V-6.

Good place to start. If wiring to/from it checks ok, try an extra ground to the dash cluster.
