power window problem
 

I've had power windows in my '49 for a number of years. Recently I've noticed
that both windows go down at about the same speed as my DD's but go up really slow.
So I took the whole door apart and cant find any problems. The glass runs dont show any wear and I cant find anything binding. I've lubed everything with spray on graphite and still no improvement. I even left the mounting bolts loose and ran the window up and down. No change.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Try a heavy jumper wire to get ground and power direct to motor bypassing everything else in the truck?

done that - no change. Next thing is to remove the glass and just power up the regulator. I'm thinking the weight of the glass may be causing it to move slow going up.

That's certainly a factor...could just be underpowered for the gear ratio it's using. Even the factory manual regulators used a spring to compensate for having to roll them up vs. the gravity assisted smoothness of rolling down, so they knew these sum*****es were heavy!

you could try a current draw test and see what it draws for each cycle. down has the weight of the window plus gravity to help it. up is opposite of that so usually it shows a poor connection, poor ground, poor relay or poor motor in the up position. usually, in the great white north, the emergency repair is done on a cold day when the owner of the car rolled the window down at the drive through or the parkade entrance and then it becomes my emergency to drop everything and come runnin. haha.

Well, tonight I removed the glass and ran the regulator up and down. Speed was about the same both ways. Put the glass back in and tried again. Going up was slower than going down. Removed the inside window trim and speed going up was better but not equal to going down. Did some looking at the track and found the track was being pinched by the window trim. By that time I was tired and the battery was almost dead. Back at it tomorrow.

I believe you need relays....2 for each door....over time the switches wear the contacts due to carbon buildup. If you add relays, the motors get power directly from them and the switches only use a very small amount. I believe Brother's makes a kit for the square bodies, but I'm sure you can make your own or adapt their kit...

I was going to suggest relays if you dont have them. Also check the voltage at the motor and possibly do a voltage drop check to see if you have a resistance in the system between the switches and the motors.

Is there a spring somewhere to take the weight, could it be weak with age?

Try it with the glass out but a glass equivalent weight on the mechanism?

When you work with it again try taking the shop vac and doing a cleaning job on the felt channel. I've been thinking that I need to do that on my BMW because it having the same issue.

I'd agre totally with installing relays if you don't have them on it.

OK, today I went back into the power window problem. All pivots, cables etc are lubed and the glass channel is clean and lubed. I removed the glass as recommended previously thinking that the glass may be too heavy for the motor. There are no springs in the system. The switch is wired directfrom the battery to the motor with an in line fuse. There are no relays for anything in the truck. I did find a slight kink in the glass channel which I fixed. I also bypassed the switch and went direct power to the motor.
After all this effort the right window which I've been working on does not move up any faster than the left on that I haven't messed with. I'm now thinking that the motor just isnt strong enough to move the glass up as fast as my new cars which is what I was hoping for. So I guess I just leave well enough alone.

All though they are expensive, look into NU-Relics electric window kits. I have them in my 49 five window.

Well, if it is any consolation, my window popped out of the holders and I have about another half hour of putting the door back together. Not opening that one again until spring and I told my wife no more drive throughs.

agree with nu-relics --- have had mine on for years ---no problem--- also while junkyardin late 70s and 80s GM cars from factory use the same window motors i have about 4 extra ones from a couple of GM's..........just in case - all 4 work v v well as extra if needed
