my twin turbo sleeper nova

here is the build up of my 64 4 door nova, a continuation of my previous thread
http://www.stevesnovasite.com/forums...d.php?t=220060

after driving this car all summer, going to the goodguys car show in texas, driving around town, and just simply enjoying it, its time for a little winter project
here is what I have so far, some LS flanges and some pipe...the turbos are going to be 70mm units, and the end goal is going to be 1000HP..should be a fun little ride..
so here is what im starting out with...

Re: my twin turbo sleeper nova

so, in starting to figure out where I can mount these, while retaining the stock hood, down bars, inner fenders, and even the current exhaust I have (3" magnaflow)... once I had it somewhat positioned, I removed the driver header, and begin to build the new header, starting with the flange, and some 1.75" primary tubes.... here is the progress so far...

Re: my twin turbo sleeper nova

dang brake lines are in the way, but there happened to be a tube that had most all the bends in the right spot to clear them, now only 3 more tubes needed to be fabbed on the driver side... so cut, index, mark, and weld was the process...

Re: my twin turbo sleeper nova

with all the pipes, in postion, I cut the tack welds at the flange, then fully welded all the pipes, then final welded them to the flange... once they were fully welded in, I clamped them using a big hose clamp, cut the primany tubes flush with each other, welded on the collector, then cut collector to length, and then welded on my 3" v-band...

Re: my twin turbo sleeper nova

so, you'll notice that the turbo is more forward then where I first had it positioned, this is because there wasn't enough room to run my 3" exhaust down pipe from the turbo to the exhaust...so forward it went, it still is going to be tight, but doable...also, the fuses/relays in the engine compartment will have to be relocated, cause the turbo inlet is trying to suck them in:rolleyes:
so ill have to move them to the inner fender area...but so far, so good, and the hood closes with no interference....

Diggin it, nice work so far.. Following along, thankfully the son's truck has more under hood room to play with when he gets to his

Re: my twin turbo sleeper nova

it takes some real gumption to take a bite as big as that.

One thing I'm curious about though. Are the pipes close enough to the hood to hurt the paint?

68 short step 05-07-2015 10:36 AM

Re: my twin turbo sleeper nova

I too thought of that, as is, they are about 1" away, so ill run it, and check the temps on the hood, and if needed ill add some heat mat to the bottom of the hood.

Are you MIG welding all your hot and cold side piping? If so what kind of welder do you have and where are you getting your pipe from?

Nice work and sweet Nova! Are the pieces that bolt the turbine housing, with the flange on it to connect to the header, cast aluminum?

Re: my twin turbo sleeper nova

pass side done. same routine as the driver side. position the turbo where it needs to go, then build the header to it... cut the pipes, clock them, mark them, then weld them...

once headers were made, I looked into mounting my wastegates, I decided that mounting them inboard looked the best, and would keep my vacuum line routing shortest run possible, to aid in response.. I went with precisions 46mm wastegates.. here is some pics of mounting them...

Re: my twin turbo sleeper nova

once I had the wastegates mounted, my next step was to make the down pipes to connect to my existing exhaust. I made the down pipes to connect with the existing placement of the header collectors, so if I chose to, I can just put my headers back on, and not have to do anything to the exhaust.
the pass side wasn't to bad to make, as there wasn't much I had to clear. The driver side was a bit more challenging, as I had to snake around the steering shaft, and the header itself, but I got it. the down pipes are 3" mandrel exhaust. once I had the DPs made, I then mad the wastegates connection to them, and finally welded in my 02 bungs, 2 per side, 1 for my 02 sensors, and one for my wideband. here are a few build pics
