new steering box
 

Does anyone make a brand new power steering box for my 78 c-10. I have put 2 rebuilt boxes in and I think they are my problem. Very tired of fighting my 1 inch slop in the wheel on the Houston freeways. All my front end suspension components are brand new.
Not sure about trying another rebuilt. The second one seemed to get rid of some of the slop but after a couple 100 miles it is back. cant believe my truck could wear one of these boxes out in this time.

Do you still have the rag joint on your steering shaft? If so have you given any thought to switching to an XJ Jeep steering shaft? It really tightened up my steering. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9C4RdvjPNQ

Tough call on new boxes, most are remanufactured. I’ve had the best luck with Napa boxes.

Edit: If you keep having repeat issues with boxes, have you verified where the slop is in the system when it feels loose?

not sure what I bought on ebay to replace the rag joint but it was a steering shaft off a jeep. The splines on the box and the splines on the shaft seemed to be a alitttle loose so I went back to a new rag joint.
The more I look and turn turn the wheel looking for sloop the more i believe it is in the box.

Don’t guess, there’s a lot of points where play can be introduced into the steering system. Have a helper lightly turn the steering wheel back and forth in the range that it has play, while you observe where the play is coming from.

you have to adjust the play in the worm gear first, which is done by loosening the jamb nut on the back of the box were the steering column bolts in, tightening the inner nut which has two holes in it, by putting a punch in one of the holes and using a screwdriver to tighten it til it won't move, then backing off 1/4 inch.
Then you can adjust the top nut and allen until the steering doesn't return to center when driving, and back it off 1/8th turn.
thats the way to do it on the vehicle. the right way is done on the workbench but this works for me.

I would try this but the rebuilder insist he has been rebuilding these for years and he already adjusted it. I believe his definition of rebuilt and mine are totally different. I think a rebuilt is one where the gears are replaced if worn with all new seals and gaskets. His must be replace seals and gaskets. I pretty much gave up on him. The second time he rebuilt he claims he replaced the gears and the slop did get better but now after a couple 100 miles it is back to junk. I have a hard time believing I can wear out these so callled new gears in 100 miles or less on 2 of his rebuilds. I think my gears are worn and he doesn't have the parts to replace them so he just tightens up the box and gives it back.

I put the new close ratio Borgeson power steering box on my 77 along with their new intermediate steering shaft, bought them thru Summit. I am very happy with the way it drives and steers. Pricey but worth it in my estimation.

Borgeson is top shelf stuff. Their U-joint steering shaft is a 100% drop in.
The Jeep XJ steering shaft is 90% drop in with a few mods needed to make it fit. Jeep uses Saginaw steering boxes and steering columns just like GM.

Just talked with redhead. customer service was great. Answered all my questions. So I just ordered a Redhead (NO a steering box). Will update when I get it and install.

I did a Redhead box with the Borgeson u-joint shaft. Love it.

Not sure is it`s relevent, but I put a Borgeson box in my 67 Suburban about 2 years ago. I absolutley love it. I originally had the power assist junk like a corvette in there when i got the truck. I updated it to a rebuilt box from a 80`s C10 box i picked up which was way better but only ok.

well the challenges continue. Installed redhead box went to connect the hoses and the female connection in the box is different then my old box. Called redhead they say I must have a newer box so I need to get new hoses for a 1978 c10. the problem is these are custom hoses to fit my ls1 pump. so I would have to buy new hoses for the ends get them cut and then take these ends and build new hoses. Anyone know if they sell an adapter for this problem? would need a male end of 11/16 18 and and female end the same size and the other hose would be 5/8 18. with the female end the same.

that's what I am looking for almost. really don't want to put the adaptors on the pump side. Rather find adapters on the box side that way I don't have to buy hoses . I currently have o ring ends (that I removed from my old 82 suburban box that I had custom molded onto the Ls hoses). my new box has inverted flair female connections. My challenge is my o ring threads are American not metric. I bet someone makes this adapter, should be something like inverted flair adapter to a o ring, 5/8 18 on both ends (and the other is 11/16)

Could you also order the box for an 84c10? I guess you would have to cover shipping vut then you would have no adapter. I know they are made but hard to find. As suggested above cpp
