Orange Peel
 

looking to get rid of orange peel. I bought the truck and it was repainted but it has lots of orange peel. It was a flipper—ya live an learn.

so it’s a single stage summit racing acrylic urethane paint. I have been searching and searching on YT to get good ideas and plan

I’m unsure what grit to start with—-maybe 1500 and see how that goes then either up or down depending how the 1500 goes. I plan to try and go up to 2000 and maybe 2500/3000. Plan to do it by hand and wet sand. Once I get done with that, plan to do an compound and then polish. There are so many compounds
Out there—what’s a good recommendation to fix a sanding of 2500. I have never buffed before but was looking to get a buffer/polisher. The next question is a long or short throw. Is there one better than the other? I read the long throw will help get the finisher faster. Any recommendations for a beginner? Don’t say Harbor Freight because we don’t have those. I’m looking to spend under $200 for buffer/polisher.

Long way to go with 1500 grit. I would start with 800, hard sanding block, wet, stay away from the edges....Good looking truck btw.

800 or 1000 would be a good start and then work up to 2000-2500. Random orbital polishers are what I see recommended for beginners. You will want a couple of each pad you use because the single stage paint will start to clog them up and make them less effective.

I too was thinking of doing mine by hand also but got lost on all the different compounds and polish. Hope someone chimes in. To many videos on this and couldn,t decide what to choose .

It's been a while since I did a cut and buff but Meguiars 105 and 205 were all I use before putting on a wax/sealant.

I would start with 2000 grit on the smallest, or easiest to repaint panel. Who knows how many coats are on it, you might burn through quickly if it only has a couple coats.

For buffers, you'll want to go up to ~5000 grit if you're using a orbital, and you'll want a long throw for more cutting action.

I prefer a rotary buffer after wetsanding, with a wool pad and Jescar Correcting Compound, then a light swirl remover polish.

You also have to think about is what it will look like if you burn through

What would be a good thickness of paint. I was told he put a few coats on. Might pick up a paint thickness gauge.

i had a "few coats" on mine ..and burned thru it trying to get orange peel out

Doesn’t sound good for home team now. I just wanna take off the tips of the peel. I guess it’s a trial and error to see how it goes. I just need to right tools and courage.
