1966 Custom SB - This is Blanca

Hey guys, my name's Sean and I'm new to the forum. I know a couple of the guys on here and met a few others here and there. I'm currently living in Calgary AB.

I picked this Chevy up off the forum a couple months ago and had it shipped up here to Calgary. I received shipment around the middle of March and began tearing into it right away. From the pictures on the listing it seemed alright and the PO answered a thing or two about it, but he said he never actually spent any time working on it personally.

When I got it home, I found some issues... which is just the way it goes as far buying someone else's project. My initial plans where to fix the bags, wheels and tune up and just enjoy the truck for the summer and begin tear down in the fall, but the more I got into the truck the more I wanted to change things.

So this is where I'm at right now. As soon as I get my C-notch in my CPP order I'll put that in and send the frame off for sandblast and powder coat. Then start reassembly. The truck it self is fairly solid. A couple week spots on the floors and fenders. All and all A solid start!

Goal is to finish the truck by June.1 :waah:

That is a cool ride, lots of potential to get as nice as you want it. The guy making the fresh air for those headers should have his hands slapped though. Not an easy fix there. Looks like you've got the love affair well under way.

Defiantly a love affair, I think the wife has realized this as well...

Wait till 18 boxes from CPP show up on Thursday then I'm really in ****.

That spot just ahead of where you had that bottle of rusty coolant sitting, is one of the places where these trucks were prone to rust. Yours has none. Don't throw any body parts away, it is better to repair or patch, than to use the crap repro parts that I used.

Ya overall since it's an original Texas truck there isn't much for rust. Fenders and under the doors in the worst. Small hole under the floor. The body lines on the front clip are so tight that I won't even attempt to use repro fenders.

The plans as of right now is pull and strip down the 350 to inspect and make sure it's a 383, then from there pull the cab, take out the cross member and spend the weekend prepping the frame and fixing the junk weld and plasma cut marks. Old shock towers in the rear etc.

Bolt in the c-notch and then from there send the frame off to powder coat. Reassemble my frame with all cpp stuff that should arrive this Thursday. Mount my fuel cell and lines, motor and ya... Lots planned.

Keep going till I run out of money I guess.

Looks like you have a better base to start with than some of us, so it should not take as much to make it very nice!
Congrats on getting this, especially all the way up across the border!!

:welcoem: and hope to see more from you in the days ahead, as you clean this rig up.

These are as fun to read about and watch as they are to build !!!

Thanks guys for all the positive replies. I'm super stoked on this truck.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow after I pull the 350 of all the problem areas I can find.

Thursday can't some quick enough for my CPP order! I feel like a kid at Christmas.

Yesterday was a night from hell. One of those nights where possibly everything was going wrong in the garage. You know that you should go inside before you cut your arm off but your a man and stubborn so you stay, your patience gets shorter and things start going off the deep end.

One thing leads to another and your standing on the end of the engine hoist as without your body weight it will fall over into the firewall as it has slipped into a crack in your garage floor after a shift from the trans linkage hooking the firewall tunnel.

All the mean while the plug on the back of my trans cracked and pissed probably 10L of trans fluid all over my garage.

End of the day. Motor and trans are out, mess cleaned up. Gained some patience haha.

On another note!

I received my CPP order. Everything is here. Besides them messing up my calliper color. Unfortunately I don;t have two more months to wait for parts. Sorry if I'm ranting to the wrong crowd but I havne't had any luck with CPP. They are horrible, I'll never by from them again. Don't get me wrong they have quality stuff and you can't beat the prices but two months I waited on spindles as my entire 18 box order sat down south, refusing to send until all the parts where there. Even after they assured me prior to order that everything was in stock and could ship within the 10 days from time of order.

****ty thing is without my parts I can't measure my offsets for my wheels, couldnt finish my frame without my c-notches and the sad story goes on.

I shouldn't be complaining. I love the truck and it will all come together in good time. Fortunate enough to have what I do.

Heres some pictures. More welding and frame work to fix.

I see what you mean about some of the problem areas. Some of that stuff looks pretty scary. Nice progress in such a short time period. That sure is a nice looking truck overall. Are you going to keep the same paint scheme?

You’re not alone on the CPP complaints. There are a lot of entries about their customer service in Review Board section:

And in case nobody said it yet, welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum Sean :D

That's too bad someone got cutting torch happy and made a bunch of extra work for you. But it sounds as though you have a good plan. I'll be watching.....

Id love to keep the colors the way they are, I am kinda partial to mine as well haha. I'm up in Red Deer every other weekend it seems with the wifes family. I mentioned your truck and acouple of my buddies from Airdrie seem to know you haha. Are you coming to Street Wheelers this year in Lethbridge?

Thanks for all the great replies guys. I stripped the cab off the frame this weekend with 5 of us. Wasn't bad but wasn't good haha. We got it off anyways.

I'll post some pics here when I can. I'm hoping that the next 5 weeks will be busy and lots of progress.

Re: 1966 Custom SB - This is Blanca

I searched awhile ago on the easiest way to remove rivets from the frame. Tons of useful hints. Basically I started by "X"ing mine then using an air chisel, unfortunately my air chisel doesn't have a lot of jam so I switches to a cut off disc and took my time until each rivet was flush with the frame. I wasn't in the mood for smashing my fingers with my BFH so I took a old torch cut motor mount and ratchet strapped it across the frame after the head was off. I slipped my punch in though the holes and it gave me the freedom to hit the thing. It took one tap per and in about twenty minutes I had all 4 uppers out and I then went on to carefully cut off the bottom ones for both the cross member and the support plate. I still X'd each one then carefully cut them off but this time top and bottom and then took my air hammer and punched each one upwards from the bottom of my frame.

Looks like you have some jerry-rigging to fix.
Sometimes that alone can be fun as you learn how clever people can be to create a work around in order to get something to function!

Keep us posted, hope your rig is done before the kitten in grown !!

It was a long weekend, stripped the motor down and everything looks good, Block is 0 decked and has 62 cc aluminum gm performance heads/valves. Weighted and forged bottom end./ After all of the measurements we figured it 10.5 or 11-1 compression as a guess.

Welding and c-notch are DONE. Long loud day. Went good. My buddy luek did an amazing job on my frame repair and my little 140 mig on 110v 20 amp worked amazing.

TIme for a shower. Frames off to powdercoat in the am!
