Alternative alternator bracket?
I have to stock 2 piece alternator bracket, and it's a total pain in the ass. The long top provides almost no support and the alternator ends up vibrating violently. I've been driving with it for a year now so it's not an emergency, but it pisses me off. Another thing, the bracket is not long enough to completely clear my valve covers, so the alternator rests on the side of the cover. When it vibrates it makes a loud metallic clanking noise that... is less than ideal.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had this problem and what they did to solve it? On another note, I added an aluminum bracket (piece of 1/8" sheet, bent and twisted) to the back of the alternator extending to the #1 cylinder exhaust bolt. It helps a tiny bit but not enough to make the alternator stop vibrating and rattling against my cover. Will include pics later. |
Re: Alternative alternator bracket?
Interesting. I have 350,000 miles on my Jimmy OEM alternator setup and it is rock solid. It's the same setup used on C3 Corvettes from 69-82 and had no issue with the SHP motors that would pull nearly 7000 rpm with the 70 LT-1.
I would start trouble shooting to figure out what is wrong with your setup and correct that before re-inventing the wheel. Whether the bracket is broken, misaligned or something else going on. |
Re: Alternative alternator bracket?
I have the stock alternator brackets on my 1972 with a stock alternator. It works just fine with no wonky vibrations. You need a bit longer fan belt if the alternator won't swing out far enough to clear the valve covers.

Re: Alternative alternator bracket?
Is this a small water pump setup are long water pump? The tall valve covers will not let the factory brackets fit right. You will need to make adjustments for them.
Pictures would help. :chevy: |
Re: Alternative alternator bracket?
There are 2 different length upper brackets also which might help with valve cover problem.

My apologies for resurrecting and old thread but this is the best result from my searching. I am looking for the bracket shown in my picture that looks to match up with the ones in thread. Can anyone tell me where i can find one to purchase? I dont need the lower cast bracket that bolts to the head, just the upper adjuster bracket. I've searched the interweb and the closest match seems to be from a C2 Corvette, which makes it more expensive.
Thanks for your help. Attachment 2073901 |

Re: Alternative alternator bracket?
Put this in the parts section as a wtb. I bought the same one off there worked good and reasonable.
