Stepside Question--Help

Im trying to save a few bucks and put universal LED tail lights on my 1980 stepside. Needless to say, Im having issues or I wouldnt be asking for help! I cant find the wiring diagram for the plug ins on the side of the bed. THe top grommet has two blade connectors in it, the bottom one has 1 blade connector. Any help on which part of the tail lights these are connected to would really help me. And also, any ideas on how to ground these as i think that is my real problem,

Thanks!

Re: Stepside Question--Help

The connectors are for running lights, brake/turn signal, and back up lights. Grab a test light, unplug the connector and test the plug, you'll quickly find out which is which. I don't have a diagram so you're on your own.

What type of issue are you having? BTW, if you're going with LED lights you'll need an electronic flasher.

I really think Im having ground issues. I.e...with driving lights on, turn signal lights wont work, turn off the lights and the turn signals work again and other fun demons like that. I didnt have any issues with putting in the front led turn signals except that my turn signal indicators on the dash are now lit up all the time...

How are you grounding the new lights? the top two prong connector is running lights and stop/turn and the bottom single prong connector is reverse lights. Ground should go to clean metal on the body.

Re: Stepside Question--Help

i had a problem with my tails not workng so i put a ground from the plate the light is mounted on to the frame. fixed my problem. my bed was not grounding to the frame correctly.

Re: Stepside Question--Help

So i got the tail lights hooked up and grounded properly. I also put in an electronic flasher(good tip btw). Now my last issue is everything works properly until I turn on the running lights. When I turn those on, the signal lights quit working(this is with the electronic flasher installed). Any more hints or tips on how to fix this last thing (besides just not using turn signals at night)?

Re: Stepside Question--Help

I'd try swapping the wires for the running lights and stop/turn lights.
