older cragar 5.5 wheel washers

I just did my annual coating of fluid film. Last two winters truck sat out with a tarp. Im a bad parent. Soon should be able to get it into a portable shed this year.

First time in 20 years im not understanding the washers. Yes on this side to the wheel aspect. Here is a photo of one washer up before snug and one down. If im doing a nut at the top of the wheel the washer wants to hang down towards the center, if I was snugging a lug below the center the heavy side of the washer hangs away.

Hopefully you can se the washers under my slightly overly enthusiastic rust proofing.

Has anyone ever had their old wheels rechromed?

thanks

Are they uni-fit rims?
You might have the wrong washers.
And I tried the rechrome the wheel thing years ago. They peeled off faster than if I’d left them alone.

Uni lug Crager wheels , This should help . You can clean them using BRONZE WOOL , NOT STEEL WOOL :chevy:

thank you I tried to get an answer from Cragar and too many days have passed.

Past I understood. I might also become a grumpy old man, oh already there

Im not sure if they are unifit, they have oval holes and my understanding was they fit two bolt patterns and that is the reason for the washers.

thanks on the link yes they are unifit id say. I should have taken a photo of the bolt holes in the wheel before washers on and will do that.

Looks like you have both offset and round washers. Look to see which ones you need. If the wheel studs wind up center in your Craiger than the round ones. If top or bottom of Crager slot get the offset ones

I have those Crager's on my 72 and the alternate wheel AWC (Allied Wheel Company) on my 67 Camaro

all the washers are the same I put one up and one down

that is the question which way do they go. I put them all in facing the center and put the truck back on the ground and a temp tarp as its just trying to snow. here is one lug and where it ended up.

Based on where your lugs sit in mag, you would want the offset ones with the larger portion facing towards center of hub

Im not a wheel expert but Ill chime in anyway since the 70's is when I cut my teeth on this stuff. Every unilug wheel I ever saw had an oval opening with a recess for the washer to sit flush. The hole in the washer was usually at one end of the washer. Flip it so the hole is outside edge and it fits one lug pattern, flip it so the washer is at the inside edge and it fits another pattern. All the time the washer was snugly in the recess so it wouldnt slide around. You could also get the washer with a center hole. Just looking at the picture you posted to me it looks like someone tried to "hog" out the hole to make it fit a pattern it wasnt made for. Also I cant see the recess the washer would fit. Probably not a unilug style.

Google vintage slotted unilug mag wheels (or Cragar SS) and you can see better what Im talking about.

I read what is said 5 inch, the hole faces outward. Doesnt mean much as I speak English more or less.

appreciate what you posted. The washer either goes up or down, I dont get what they said. Washers are the the top ones. No issue with the wheels or the truck.
