Forest's rebuild thread
 

I have been on here for a while so I thought I would start a rebuild thread. "Rebuild" meaning, "Your truck looks like it is almost done why are you taring it apart?" The reason comes in one word, and that word is rust. Rust that has been covered with a layer of sheet mettle and then bondoed smooth and is now bubbling. Front fenders that have been welded to the cab because the brackets have rusted off. So far I have come to one conclusion. The more you dig the more holes you find. The first picture is of what the truck looked like before the rebuild. The rest are what it looks like now with a little work that I have dun on the fire wall and the door corners fixed. The rest of the front end is at the sheet mettle shop being straightened and having the rust removed. I am having the most difficult time deciding what color I want to paint it. On a side note, any one that tells you that new environmentally friendly paint lasts longer than old paint is trying to sell you something and my guess is that it is new environmentally friendly paint.

The center one is supposed to be silver on top and the top one is not supposed to have a green interior.

Got front fenders back from sand blasting. According to the sheet mettle man the drivers side is not worth repairing.

Super chevy is in a week or so in Bakersfield. May be a few parts for sale. Looks like you could use a couple of fenders. Got to love old trucks.

I'm in for this one, Forest. Sorry to hear about the rust. I've always loved your truck. I never would have guessed that was under there.

Found more rust in the drivers side corner yesterday.:whine:

A little update. I finally found the fenders I needed. The one that I got was perfect and right down the street (thanks Delmo). I am currently having the body work and priming done to all the front sheet mettle. It will be a while before I get any more work done since I had knee surgery on the 1st and will not be able to even drive for 5 weeks.

Due to knee surgery and being to tired to take photos after working on the truck it has been a while sense I have updated the thread. Recently I have cleaned up and painted the front ends of my frame rails, installed a new oil pan and installed my break booster. Which will probably need to be reinstalled sense, when I originally got disk breaks, about 10 years ago, the guy that helped me install them thought the best way to do so is drill some holes in the fire wall and use the bracket from a early 70's pickup. Resulting in the bracket that is not lined up with the original hole in the fire wall and vary difficult to reinstall.

In recent news I found about a 1/2 inch of bondo on the roof while stripping the paint out of the drip rails. I figured there would be some but not that much. Now I know why they sell ladder racks. It is not all bad news though. I only found surface rust in the drip rails and the roof does not appear to have any serious rust either.

No that is not a sand trap on a golf corse that is bondo. The red arrow is pointing to where the bondo starts to thin out.

It's unbelievable what some people do with body filler :crazy:

You know I do make a booster bracket for the '60-'62's that will solve your brake booster mounting issue.

I've had some bondo queens in the past. The rebuild is looking good. For you color ideas, all look good, but I like the original color scheme the best of the 3.

Wow I thought mine had a lot of bondo on it. That must be at least a gallon used up there of bondo.

Forest, I like the original paint scheme (#3) or something similar the best. Sorry about the rust and bondo, but it will be nice when your done.

ya that's a lot of bondo...do they even make replacement roof panels?

I installed my newly painted radiator support and my new radiator. My original 62 fan shroud does not fit even thought the radiator fits right. It is wider than the new radiator by about an inch on both sides. I think I might need to get an electric fan set up.

I started to install my old hooker headers that have just been ceramic coated but it started to rain.

Won't be working on the truck for a little while. I broke my arm in a car crash. It is so disappointing because I am so close to getting it to paint and I now have to use some of my truck money to get another daily driver.

sorry I couldnt help it,Im with you on the new paint Im wishing I would have done single stage,I think the old stuff was the best.I vote for the tan color,it always looks good with black rims.My truck had alot of bondo in places it didnt have to? I think the guy just filled dents with bondo without trying to pound them out,good luck with your build.

Yeah mine had some nice dents that the PO just decided to fill with about 1/2 to 3/4 inch of bondo. And most placed you could get behind to knock the dent back out.....go figure!
CV65 what is the color you painted your truck. Looks good. We are going to paint our 65 step British Racing Green. Hope it comes out as nice as yours. Looks good.

hey Forest, what is the drop on your truck I really like the stance? tire and rim size?

The wheel s are 17 by 8. It has a 4/5 drop with 275/55R17 in the rear and 275/50R17 up front. I had to roll the rear lip to get the tires to fit and even with that it is carry close to rubbing.
