Converter change

I know this is a very generic question as it would depend on your set up, but I'm going from a 3,200 to a 4,400. The best I was doing dead hooking at the track was a 1.87 average 1.89. If you look at my dyno, It needs more verter period. I shift at 7,400.

If you had to guess, what do you think the new 60's would be?

Any of you have first hand with converter swaps and what they did for your ET?

Re: Converter change

If you think of what a converter really does...it gets interesting.

When the converer is stalling it is multiplying torque, by as much as 2 to 1. On my truck it stalls to6500 rpm and I shift at 7200.
The basic rule of thumb is for a th400 tranny have the stall set at max torque and for a glide about 400 rpm over max torque.

It's been my experience you can't over stall a drag ride.

Also the converter is the one place not to cheap out. A good converter can out perform a cheap one by a full second in ET

Agreed.....go with a hughes converter at the bare minimum. B&M and TCI converters are not gunna get it done.

Re: Converter change

TCI does make fairly good converters too, not the listed street ones. The one I have is good for 1200hp and nitrous, it's pretty much as good as it gets from them before you move into a custom converter. But ya if you have the cash do it right the first time.

I've had good luck with Ptc in Muscle Shoals, Al. Kenny Ford is the owner and those guys support racing in my area they are at the track at most decent size events.

I have had bad luck with Art Carr! It took them 4 or 5 tries on a 700r4 convertor in my old street truck!

I had a Jw convertor that was great untill I had it freshened it up!

A bunch of guys here also run Neil Chance converters. Lots of positive feedback on those.

Re: Converter change

I have heard great things about Chance converters. I had a 3,200 Fuddle in mine. A friend wanted it for his 2000 LQ9 Turbo swap since I was going with a 4,400. So He gave me what I paid for it since it has maybe 3000 miles on it. I bought another Fuddle for now. Should do better than before. At some point I might drop the $1,200 on a Chance converter.

Re: Converter change

Its funny to hear you all talk of neil chance so highly. Im not saying its badbut he is a local guy and he dosnt seem so great to us or should i say "big" to us.

Re: Converter change

So both times I got my Fuddle it was in a howards box. I'm not sure if Howards builds them or if Fuddle gets them then modifies them.. But all I can say is there is a huge difference between the 3,200 and 4,400 when I step on the go fast peddle. I just need to get it to hook now..

Results tell everything ....

In the world I live in, these guys are using Chance and Hughes. Never have I seen one go bad or break. These guys do not run chessy 100-200 shots of dope either.

I have a Chance converter in my ride and I have to say the guys were great .
They took all the time we needed to ensure I got the best converter for my set up . They asked a million questions and even brought up things I would have never thought of.
Anyway I would buy from them again .

Re: Converter change

Well the little testing I got to do with the 4,400 Fuddle looked ok http://73-ls1.com/63truck/Movie_0002.wmv

I think I am eithe toping out the spring in front or the rear is coming back and unloading the tires. I have a new front spring coming in and I am going to be changing the shock settings as well as putting in the adjustable rear control arm mount.

i have run alot of them and the truck was fastest with a used B&M in it . I pulled that out and sold it for almost nothing thinking it was junk . I have a Trans-king J9 in it now . I bought a hughes for it . Just plain tired of changing converters all the time .

hotrod 80 02-25-2008 02:24 AM

Re: Converter change

Re: Converter change

other than super73 has anyone else had experiance with Fuddle? they seem to be fairly resonable and they were the only ones that returned my email.

Re: Converter change

57.. You might want to ask that question on LS1tech.com and Perfoamancetrucks.net. There are a lot of people running Fuddles on those sites.

Did you talk to John or Carissa?

57sailplane 02-26-2008 07:08 AM

Re: Converter change

it was john. he said i should run there 3200 hp convertor... i am wanting somthing that i can use for my final pakage. my motor is built for the eventual twin turbo's 1000plus hp. but for right now i will be just runing on the motor. its a money thing. little by little i will get er done. i dont want to buy 2 convertors so he sugested this for my final set up. he said it should stall out at around 5500 to 5700 rpm with 1100 hp.
