1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
Have reviewed and reviewed posts for which years you can use to add an original looking power steering pump set-up to a 1965 292 engine. This is a question not an answer. Is it correct to say the brackets, pulleys, pump, etc. need to be from a 1973 or older 292 engine only?
This is my take from many post such as those by "71 SWB 4X4" and others. Thank you for your patience as I know their have been many, many posts on this subject. There are reported interference issues with using PS from 1974, and newer 292 on the older engines. Les |

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
OK, Parts book is stating 1963-1971 on the six cylinder main bracket 3877430 then 63-71 support bracket 3891598. It just states 6 cylinder, not clearly 292
67-72 292 bracket 3914992 Again not clear but heres the pages from the parts book. http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j.../72TL_1033.png http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j.../72TL_1032.png |

Here is a pre 1973 292 setup that was on ebay a while back. Pay particular attention to alternator, water pump and crankshaft pulleys used for proper belt alignment.

Sig, your setup is from the 67-72 vintage, not saying at all it wont work, but I can see the inner fenders etc. Great pictures and info Sig.
Im curious now about the correct or originals for 63-66. The pulley on my setup is odd the way it sticks out but I have another factory 63 292 setup with the same pulley . I have more brackets I need to get out and compare. |

It was period correct "looking", meaning it was not custom built and had the correct style pump and cast pulleys. If someone was wanting power and just to look correct I think the 67-72 type would pass... These are rare and few would have ever seen one. But no for the purist there are differences. Great thread going for those who have a 292 and want power steering, lots of good info. |

More great information, thanks. Looks like I have the crank, water pump, and alternator pulleys on my 65' 292 engine already that I need to add power assist steering.
Now I need the power steering brackets, pump and pump pulley. I am going to try and and get the original pump pulley if I can find one. Below are pics of my pulleys. Have not figured out tablet to let me post more then one image at a time. |

footnote/reference: to my above pics, the alternator is a newer style replacement.

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
Les, check the way that alternator is mounted, I think its supposed to be a little further forward to line both grooves of the pulley in line with the crank pulley. It looks likew they added a nut or something to space the adjuster bracket.

Re: 1965, L6 292 Engine Power Steering Pump Set-Up
These are the two main brackets for power steering on all 63-66 trucks 230 250 and 292. The difference with a 63-66 292 is the pumps pulley. These same brackets were used on all passenger car sixes also, Camaro Nova Chevelle and Impala and were in use on 230-250 trucks till 1970 according to the parts books.

Again these are not correct for 67 up 292 but are correct for 63-66 292. http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...RACKETS017.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...RACKETS019.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...RACKETS020.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...RACKETS022.jpg |

60-66
You are right they did add a nut so that PS pulley is offset, will remove tomorrow. Thanks for clearing up the information on the PS pump brackets. It is a great help! |
