putty for chrome trim clips?
1 Attachment(s)
I remember along time ago when I put on my side trim for my 78 the guy gave me some putty type stuff that looked like string licorice but gray. You wrapped some around the trim clips and it would seal so no rain would get in the holes on the body. These are the big clips that you drill holes in the body. I don,t what it is called or where to get it now or if there is an alternative . I don,t need much.

Re: putty for chrome trim clips?
Having worked on a lot of old cars with a lot of stainless steel trim the problem is the clip scratches the paint around the hole it starts to rust and the rust travels . When you pull stainless steel trim off of 50s car there is usually quite a bit of rust. Apply Aluminum pigmented permanent rust sealer around these holes and in that area because once you scratch it the rust will not travel beyond the scratch and will seal whatever existing rust was under the trim. 2 coats. Then prime and paint. Then you can use your 3M caulking strips. It was the first thing I addressed when I wrote the Tip Sheet. Hope this helps

Re: putty for chrome trim clips?
Thanks,I went to the body shop supply guy and he hasn,t sold any in 5 yr,s. I would have to buy a large amount , it comes in 2 lbs. box. I will try hardware store . At least I know what it is called.
