side mount gas tank

I have a 66 Chevy fleetside shortbed that was converted to a 4x4. I want to move the fuel tank out of the cab but also want to keep the spare under the rear. Has anyone moved the tank under the bed in front of the rear axle between the frame and the driveshaft? I have read many threads about the rear mount tanks but haven't seen any about the side mount inside the frame. Is a custom tank the only way to go? I need to be able to stick with the 0-30 ohm sender also.
Thanks for your input.

Re: side mount gas tank

I have spent many hours laying under my truck looking around for different options and location for fuel tanks. There are not many ways to get a tank around the drive line or near the trailing arms. Outside the frame is not a great idea for safety reasons,
So the only options I have really thought about is.... Back behind the seat, behind the rear axle, or in the bed hid in or under a crossbed tool box. Any other ideas , bring em on !

Do you have trailing arms or leaf rear suspension?

Here is a link to "The Stovebolt" where some interesting ideas have been tossed around:

Since you have leaf springs one idea is to use a S-10 between the frame style tank like the one shown below.

Hope this helps....

Thanks for the tip. I'm heading to the salvage yard today looking for S10s. Any further suggestions are welcome.

Re: side mount gas tank

You've probably already done this but you will want to measure the depth - width - length you have under your truck for the tank and compare that with the S10 tanks overall dimensions.

These links have dimensions of S-10 Gas Tanks:

Looks like they are pretty long....

Crossmember interferences will likely be an issue...

If the tank is too deep it might look nasty hanging below the frame rail..

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

What if you leave the original trailing arms on a 1965 chevy C10. I am also look for ideas because I would like to move my tank out of the cab but also have an under mount spare tire. Thanks Jeff.

I don't think this would work with the 60-63 X frame for GMC's, not enough room.

trevota, my 64 3/4 ton GMC has the same thing as yours. I think they were dealer installed and probably wound not work for him as his is a short wheel base truck. Mine hold about 20 gal each but maybe he could install two 10 gal ones?

63's didn't have X frames.

here's my 5cents:
I went to the junk yard and got 2 different gas tank from s10 and none fits!!!
Only if u custom make one from a similiar shape of the s10. I even have pictures and it does not fit. The pics u see is from a S10 truck and 60-66.

Re: side mount gas tank

Hey how about using an Ford Aerostar plastic gas tank and it should fit on the passenger side up near the cab inside frame so you can still have your spare tire area in tact plus the weight distribution would be optimal .
I haven't measured this but I own an Aerostar and had the tank out a few times . I will measure it up , if anyone is interested .
Of course going out on a limb is the Ford sender going to match the 66 Jimmy gauge ...?

Hey thats cool ! I wonder who makes that tank or where your previous owner got it ?
How many gallons ?
My 67 Dodge truck 1/2 ton had the filler like that and I had no problems w/ gassing up there ( like yours) near the tire .
